The Legislature will adjourn to day, and tho members will eat Christmas turkey at home. There was a run off and considerable smash-up of cars at thc depot on Saturday afternoon. Tuesday and Wednesday were big days with our merchants generally and confec tioners specially. Capt. John McFall has moved back to Port Royal-"down among thc monkeys." in his own words. Eggs have been selling for the past week or two nt 25 cents a dozen, and are extreme ly scarce at that price. Abe Benson's head carne in contact with the heels of a mule thc other day and seri ous bruises was the result. Remember that thc stores and other places of business in town will be closed on Satur day, Monday and Tuesday next. The young people of Belton will have a Christmas Soiree in Lewis A' Stringer's Hall on next Tuesday evening, 28th inst. Mr. W. 8. Brown has been confined to bis residence by sickness since tho middle of last week. Wo are pleased to state that he is improving. Mr. J. P. A pocket-book containing six or seven dollars was lost one day last week between tiiis pace and thc residence of Rf r. G. L. 'Schrunp, in Hall township. A suitable re ward will be paid for its delivery to Mr. S. Mr. Samuel M. Clayton is the only per son in this County who took a premium at the Industrial Exhibition of !he South Carolina Agricultural Society, recently heidi in Charleston. Tho 1st Assistant Adjutant-General of tho United States Army has extended on invitation to the Palmetto Hilles, of this fdace to be present and participate in tlie naugural ceremonies of President Garfield on thc 4th of March. Toe first snow of the season fell on Sun day night last, but owing to the dampness from the rain in tho early part of the .light there was very little on the ground by morn ing, and by Monday night there was scarce ly a trace of it remaining. The joint meeting of the Sunday Schools of the town in the Baptist Church on next Sunday afternoon will doubtless be u pleas ant occasion. Addresses will be delivered bv H. G. 8cudday. Esq., and Revs. D. E. Frierson and W. H. Strickland. Greenville has received and handled 24, 092 bales of cotton during the three months and a half of th a season. Last season the number for t\e twelvo months was a little over 30.000, an avcrugo of about 2,500 bales a month. Tho average this season has been 0,850 bale? a month. Ligon, Treasurer of the Savan nah Valloy Railroad Company, has recently received $3,500 from the Treasurer of Abbe ville County, which, with the ?371 received from the same source lost spring, makes an aggregate of $4,171 paid by tho taxpayers in Lowndcsville, Magnolia and Calhoun townships, in that County, towards tho con struction of thc road. Mrs. E. T. Glover, formerly of Anderson, hud her handsome residence In the city of Greenville destroyed bv tire on lust Sunday evening at about 5 o'clock. The fire origi nated From a chimney in an extension in the rear ot iier dwelling, uno spread so rap idly thut all efforts to extinguish tho flames were futile. All of her furniture nnd house hold goods were saved, even tho window blinds and doors being wrenched from their hinges. Thc building was Insured for 91,OtX), which will nearly cover tho entire loss. A colored man by thu name of Rich Bobo was shot and killed at a colored wedding in renville County on last Thursday night by ono of two parties-Enoch Seawrighl or Abe Abraham, both colored. They have both been lodged in Greenville jail to awuit trial. The fact was developed at thc inquest over Dobo's body thut every man at tho wedding except one bad a pistol. This is tho third similar murder that has occurred within a radius or three miles during the lust three months. Xo ideu could be ob tained of the motives for Bubo's killing beyond tho general impression thal there wiis a woman in the cuse. We clip the following from the Greenville Enterprise and Mountaineer, und commend its teaching to the citizens of our own town, to which il is equully as applicable as to Green ville : "There arc many poor families in thc city, who lind it pit tty hard to get along, and when the joyous season of Christinas urrives. may not have money to buy their childrenthethingsthutchildhood yearns for. Todd furnishes us with the following concerning tho cuusc or blind staggers and a repiedy for the disease: "I am fully pursuaded, from an Investigation of thc cause of tho disease, that it is nuth ing more nor ?ess than inilummution or the bruin, caused by improper food and treat ment, blasted corn, or such corn as is usually mude on thin land, partly unsound, is-productivo of blindstnggcrs. It is well known that there was an "unusual amount of blast in corn tho present year. There is also an unusual amount of unsound corn, tho ends of many ears api>areutly sound being totally unfit for horse food, which should be shelled off and thrown to the pigs. During tho years 1854 und 185S there was considerable fatality among horses irom this disease, which I waa thoroughly con vinced was produced hy tho cause stated above. In '64 I hud a horse to dio of tho diseaso, and in '68 liad another violently at tacked with it. 1 had heard Enoch Breazeale say the only remedy was to crack the skull between the eyes with a chisel. Several good judges of horses und their diseases pronounced this a hopeless case. With such assistance as I could command, how ever, I cut in the skin of the forehead agush about four inches and skinned it one inch on either side, und about one inch above tho curl I bored through thc skull with a large gimlet, and from thc garden I procured some garlic, which I p'.aecd under ibo skin and sowed Up the incision ; and then turned the horse out to die. Instead of dying, he began to improve, and in 24 hours waa ap parently weil, ir I had a horse utllicted with blindstuggcrs I would uso this same remedy. Others can do as they please." We ure ghul to know .but tunny through out thc County un* expecting to hear some thing of the result of thc ictn|>crunco work, which, is fur as we are concerned, ended a few days ago. The cnterpriso was begun late in the fall when thc wu de County was unusually busy gutbering the generous crops. As therefore was feared at some places the work was not appreciated us would otherwise have been expected. Yet, on the other band, from no few neighborhoods where wc tliot v'lit little would be done, such lists of signatures were sent us could have been gotten by nothing Jess than workers. The two months of work procured almost 2.000 signatures to each petition. Thc petition for the local option law was signed bv u few more than the petition for the prohibition of tho sale of liquor in Charleston.
