"Did Tom ever do you any harm, Ed
ward ?"
"Lord, sab, ho didn't differ from tho
rest in that. They'? all down on the
nigger. If they don't insult him they
cheat him or ahuso him. You don't
know how these people hate UB colored
folk, till 'long about election times
a-ah ! look out, there's taffy then."
"You think the prejudico very strong
ngninst the colored man ?"
"Think? don't I know-shoo I let a
colored'man try it on. There's Artis,
now-tho barber. Artis is a decent man ;
well, ho's a gentleman, if any African
ever was, and ho's nearly white. Artis
laid up a bit of money to buy a lot nnd
build a house for hissclf aud family. Do
you know ho couldn't get a man to sell
him a lot for any money? Tho meanest
white trash in town, as well t>s the hest,
wouldn't bavo a nigger living next door
-not much ; a-ha ; look out, I tell you."
"Worse than old Virginia?"
"Well. Bah, there's no better place for
a colored man than in that same old Vir
ginia-that is, if lie minds his place.
They won't stand no airs-not much, I
tell you. Rut let a nigger keep well in
his place, nnd he's nt home, and don't
you forget it."
"I should think, Jackson, you would
prefer your old homo then ?"
"Not much. Yes, they're very good to
the nigger, if the nigger knows his place.
But Ibero ain't no business. Lord lovo,
there's moro business in West Liberty
than in all Richmond. Why, I began
livery on ono boas; ask your brother.
Tho old sorrel cob ho brought out of the

it down, you see, .br fonh year in tho
nah. Now, I h p. vc seven bosses, three
buggies, n plueh n, expresa wagon and
rockaway, and I'm just gittin' right on."
"Well, couldn't you havo done tho
Bamo in Richmond?"
"Not much ; not by a jug-full. Ef I'd
the capital to begin with, and people
patronized mc, I couldn't havo collected.
You see, it ain't a nigger's place to col
lect what's n-owin' to him. Ef ho pree
8cnts a bill liko a whito man he's takin'
on airs, and they don't like it, you seo ;
and when they don't like it they' ain't
slow in showing ii."
"Then this Ts a better region for the
colored citizens?"
"In somo respects, certainly ; but tho
worst of it is he hain't got no place herc.
They don't like him ef he's humble, and
wuss for him cf ho's proud ; and all
cheat him cf they can."
"But ho has his political rights?"
"But has ho? Why, of courso he has.
A nigger is at liberty to vote just as he
pleases, provided it pleases him to voto
the Republican tickot. But look out,
colored man, ef ho tries tho Democratic
ticket. Why, there was a report started
on mo once that I hnd tried tt, aud the
Lord deliver usl I had to sloop with
ono oyo opon and a revolver handy.
Theso Republican darkies have n little
Ku Klux Klan of (heir own, ano they'ro

honest man, or least means to bo honest,
but ho has had somo tough wrestling with

rapidly moved or caused to flicker, the
curious effect is produced of long con

that it gives ons a very interesting ap

- "Grizzly Dan" has led a wonderful
life. In Montana ho was once set npon

and was obliged to run fot his life. He
headed for the brink of a cliff about 700
feet high, dodging tho bullets Sred at him

Grizzly Dan unhesitatingly leaped over

who gathered in tx row to watch his fail.
Dan turned in tho air as he was falling,

and Dan kept pulling the lover and trig

- Dr. O. B. Mayer, Jr., of Newberry,
has written and interesting letter to thc
Spnrtanburg Herald, in which ho main
tains the theory that Dr. Tanner, "after
he hud hinted long to consumo thc nutri
tive materials contained in Iiis blood, the
blood commenced tonbsorh from hisr.wn
flesh tho necessary materials to sustain
his life. As tho weather was warm, it
look very little heat-producing (carbon
iferous) material ; much less than ?I
would if he lind fasted duringcold weal!. ?
er consequently very little of his fut was
absorbed." l?o says further, that Dr.
Ta HUT would have continued to live until
tho avaiinblo supnly of those tissues
wero absorbed. That water was abso
lutely necessary to the succ?s of his fast,
as there is considerable evaporation from
tlie body going on all the time as well as
loss in other way?, and therefore, without
drinking water, the fluidity of tilt blood
would have ceased. He says in conclu
sion :
"J do not think it can be of nuy beno

upon it us only proving how long Dr.
Tanner could livo upon his flesh."-Co
