Lennox Ray sprang from tho train and
hastened np tho green lane to the wide,
old fashioned farm house, carrying his
valiso in bis band.
"I wonder if Nannie got my note, and
is waiting? Hallo 1"
This last exclamation was drawn from
Ray's lips by a cherry, wbicb, coming
from above somewhere, came in contact
with bb) nose.
Fe looked up, and there,-perched Uko
a great bird, upon the limb of a huge old
cherry tree, and looking down on bim
with dancing eyes and brilliant cheeks,
was a young girl.
"How do, Lennox? Como up and
have some cherries 1" was tho mis
chievous greeting.
"Nannie 1 is it possible!" exclaimed
Lennox, severely.
And while Ray looked on in etern dis
approval, the young witch swung herself
lightly down.
"Now, don't look so grnm, Lennox
dear," she said, slipping her littlo bands
into his, with a coaxing motion. "I
know it's Tom-boyish to climb the cherry
trees, but then it's such fun."
"Nannio, you should have been ahoy,"
said Lennox.
"I wish I had ! No, I don't cither ;
for then ou wouldn't have fallen in love
with me.' What made yo*:, dear ?" with
n fond glance and n caressing movement.
"Because you are so sweet, darling,"
answered Ray. melted iu spite of himself.
"But T lo WIBU, Nannie, you would leavo
off those hoydenish ways, and be more
dignified."
"Liko Miss Ishnm ?" nskc? Nnnule.
"Miss Isham is a very superior woman,
nnd it would not hurt you to copy ber in
eome respects."
The tears sprang into Nannio's eyes nt
bis tone.
Tho/ went into thc parlor and Ray
took a seat in tho great arm chair.
Nannio, giving her curls a toss back
ward, went and sat down.
"I wish you would pul up those flyaway
curls and <rrcss your ht>>r as other young
ladies do," said Ray, "and see hero Nannio
I want to hove a talk with you.' You
know I lovo you ; but in truth, my dear,
my wife must have something of the ele
gance of refined society. Your manners
need polish, my dear.
"I came down to tell you thru my sis
ter Laura is making np a party to visit
tho noted w, .crinp; pince?, and Bbc wishes
you to be ono of thc number."
"Aro you going?" asked Nannie.
"No; my business will not allow it*
but I shall BOO you several times. Will
you go ?"
"I don't want to go ; I'd rather stay
hero in tho country and climb cherry
trees every day?"
"Nunnie, I must insist upon more self
control," said he coldly.
"But don't send mo nway," BIIO plend
ed. .
"It is for your good, Nannie, and you
must bo content to go. Will you?"
Tho supper bell rang at this iiiBtnnt,
and Nunnie haetily answered :
"Yes; let mo go, Lennox," and ran
out of tho room, and up stairs to ber own
chamber.
"Yes. I'll go. and I'll tench vnu ono
lesson, Mr. Lennox Ray ; seo if ? don't,"
she murmured.
It was near tho middle of September
before Mr. Ray, heated, dusty ano weary,
entered the hotel where bis sister's party
was stopping.
"Lennox, you hero ?" said she.
"Yes. Where's Nannie?"
"She was on the piazza, talking with a
French count, a moment ago. Alt 1 there
sho is by the door."
"Ahl" Bald Lennox, dropping Laura's
bend and making MB way toward the
door.

"Ab ; good evening, Mr. Ray."
"Ob, Nannio, are you glad to seo mo ?"
said Lennox, feeling that bis henri was
chilling within bim.
"Ob, to be sore, Mr. Ray ; quite glad.
Allow me to present my friend, the Count
do Boaurepalre. Mr. Ray, Monsieur."
Lennox hardly deigned a bow to tho
Frenchman, and offered his arm tc Nan
nie.
-You will waik with me a little wbilo ?"
"Thanks-but the music is beginning,
aud I promised to dat.?c with Mr. Blair/'
"But afterwards?" said Lennox, tho
chill growing colder.
"But I nm engaged to Mr. Thorntou."
When then ?" demanded Lennox, with a
jonlouB pang.
"Really* Diy card is eo full, I hardly
know. I wilt, however, try and apare
you a waltz somewhere."
"Good heavens 1 Nannie, what nffecta
ion is this?"
She favored him witb a well-bred stare.
"Pardon I do not understand you."
And taking the arm of ber escort, she
walked away with tho air of an empress.
Lennox sought his slater.
"Laura, how have you changed Nannio
so?" ho demanded.
"Yes, sho ls changed. Isn't she per
fect?"
"Perfect? Rather too perfect to suit
mo," growled Lennox.
"To-morrow I shall see more of Nan
nie," ho thought.
But to-morrow and to-morrow and to?
morrow, it waa all the same, and that
"elegant Miss Irving," as thoy styled her,
was always in deaiaud, and poor Lennox,
from the distance at which she kept him,
looked almost heart broken varying be
tween wrath, jealousy, pride and dc

"I believe you wished me to come here
to improve my manners, Mr. Ray ; to
acquire ino elegance of society," she said,
coldly.

blame. You moot excuse me now. Mr.
Ray, I am going to rido with the Count
do Boaurepalre."
And with graceful gesture of adieu, the

That afternoon Lennox walked unan
nounced into Laura's room.
"I thought I'd drop in and say good

he. "I leavo to-night."
"Iudoed? Where are you going?"
asked Laura.
"Oh, I don't know !" was his savage

here?"
"Oh, Nannie, darling,'-* he cried, clasp
ing her clover. "I wouldn't gi vo ono toss
of your old brown curls for all the fash
ionable young ladies in tho wot id."
"Then you will bara to take your old
Nannie back again, Lennox, dear."
And Lennox, passionately clasping her
to bim, begged to be forgiven, and vowed
he would not exchango bis precious little
wild roso for all tho hot-house pluuta in
Christendom.

cattlo "smelt trouble in the air" is one
of tho tilings which "no feller cnn find
out."
