Tho following sad but beautiful Unc?
wero written by tho late Hicbnrd Liles,
Esq., of Danville, Va., a gentleman of cc
mous, a fina scholar, and a lawyer of dis
tinction. The lines speak of tuc ?ad ex
perience ami fate of th" author :
I have been to thc funeral of all my hopes
And entombed them ono by one ;
Not a word wa? said
Not a tear wuo shed
When tho mournful task was done.
Slowly und sadly I turned me round
And sought my silent room ;
And there alono
By thc cob! hearthstone
I wooed thc midnight gloom.
And as tho night W?IU?B deepening sitado
Ixwcred above my brow,
I wept o'er days
When manhood's rr.ys
Where brighter far than now.
Thc dying emberson the hearth
Give o"ut their flickering light
As if to say
This is the way
Thy life bball closo in night.
I wept aloud in anguish Boru
O'ro the blight of prospects fair ;
While demons laughed
And eager quailed
My ?cora like nectar rare.
Through hell's ral halls an echo ran
An a bo loud and long,
As in the bowl
I plunged iuy soul,
In (bc might of madness strong.
And lhere within that sparkling glass
1 knew the causo to lie :
This all men own
From zone to KOIIO
Yet millions drink and die.
A Street Cnr Mystery,
You may have been on a streit car
when n man or woman accidentally
dropped a piece of moucy in tho straw
on tho floor. If so you felt an overpow
ering desire to help recover it. One day
not long since a woman on a Woodward
avenue car dropped something while pay
ing her faro. She said it was a dune,
while a small hoy thought it looked like
a cent, and two other passengers asserted
it was a quarter. Tho woman had plenty
of help to search for it, and the force
was suddenly increased by a man who
left his scat in the rear of tho car, cine
forward and got down on his banda and
knees and said :
"I always havo good luck in finding
lost things. Are you sure lt was mon
ey?"
"Oh, yes," replied tho woman.
The man poked around in tho straw
and suddonly held up a big jack-knife
with a broken blade and asked :
"Couldn't havo hcon this, could it?
Or did you drop this aftcwarus?"
"I never had that-never saw it be
fore 1" she tartly nnawered aa her face
grew red.
"Didn't, ch ? Well bub, you can havo
it. We'll look n little further and seo
what wo can seo. Hero are two panta
huttons, hut I don't suppose you dropped
them, and I'll put them into my pocket."
"Never mind looking any more-I
don't caro for tho loss?" sho remarked
aa her position grew uncomfortable.
"Oh. it's no trouble to mo. and it hn
longs tb you, whatever it is.' It alweys
vexes mo to-ba I may bo 'twas this."
He held up a corkscrew with thc end
bored deeply into a cork, and thc woman
fairly rose as BIIO said :
"I never bad that-never Baw it beforo
-nover I''
"Didn't, eh ? Well. I'll poekot it, for
such things como awful hanny about thc
house. I'll look a little further."
"No, you needn't. I guess I didn't
drop anything-I'm suro I didn't."
"I kinder think you did, for I heard
something clink," ne observed as be
flawed around. "Even if it's only a cent
t will be a cent ahead if wo find it.
Now, what's this ?"
Tho woman almost climbed over him
to get to tho door and drop off, btit she
wasn't ten feet away when he i hed
tho door, hold up a vest buckle botween
his thumb and finger and called :
"Hold on-I've found it-hero it is?"
Sho started on a run down a Bide street,
and when tho car Btnrted up the man
tramped the straw down ana hung the
buckie on tho front door with tho ro
mark :
"It's little reward any one gets for do
ing a favor, but seeing I've got tho cork
screw, I'll leave this hero and sho can
get it or let it go into tho treasury of the
etrect car com>-.ny."-Detroit Free Pr?ts.
