Mr. James Hinton, a tenant of Mr. C. S.
Beaty, sent, us a couple of Bwect popar/Tes,
this year'B crop, on Monday that were three
or four inches long and one und a half or
two inches In diameter. They were o red

Mr. J. C. Vandiver, of Hopewell town
ship, brought the first load of watermelons
of tho season to town jn Saturday, and by

ligations to him. Sweet potatoes and wa
termelons aro decidedly moro palatable
than cotton blooms and oats.
The rains last week wore general, but not
every where bountiful. It sonic sections of
tho County barely enough fell to lay tho
dust, and thc crops aro now in as much
need of rain as before it fell. In other lo
calities, however, the seuFDn was fine, and
tho growing corn and cotton were greatly
benefited,
The Raikes Centennial Celebration in the
Baptist Church on Sanday afternoon was
largely attended,. and afforded a pleasant
hour's scrvlco to all present. The addresses
"of Messrs. Tribble and Bell were to tho
point, and mado good impressions on the
congregation, while thc music by thc choir
waa unusually tine.

Itev. T. 1*. Hell, thc newly elected pastor
of the Baptist Church, arrived in Anderson
on hud- Saturday, and preached his drat ser
mon on Sunday morning to a large congre
gation. Mr. Bell is a young mau, unmar
ried, has just recently graduated in tho
Southern Baptist Theological t'etirioury,
and is a very promising young minister,
l?o meets with a w^rm reception uot only,
by tho members of his own church, but by
the people of thc whole town generally, and
will doubtless receive that cordial und earn
est support in tho work of his pastorate dial
hus always been given his predecessor.
There was an excursion of colored peoplo'
from Newberry to Greenville on last Satur
day, and from tho reports we have heard
the behavior of the excursionists was sim
ply outrageous. As the train passed
through this County they were shooting
and cursing to the annoyance of persons
living along the Boori, and we learn were
fighting among themselves, several being
badly bruised and cut up. lt wau nt first
reported that ono or two had been killed,
but this was incorrect. Persons traveling
on railroads ought to bc made to behave
themselves, and where guilty of such con
duct n? Hint o? Saturday, tho Conductors
should bo instructed to have tho rioters
arrested and taken from the trains.
As usual, tho Duo West Commencements:
last week were largely attended, and tho
exercises throughout most interesting.
Anderson County was well represented, as
is customary. Rev. Samuel B. Jones, D.
D., of Pendleton, preached tho Baccalau
reate Sermon on Sunday morning, and Rev.
John B. Adgcr, D. D., of tho samo town,
hy invitation of tho itndcuts of tho Theo
logical Seminary, preached ono of his finest
sonnons on Sunday afternoon. The ad
dross before the Aiumhri Society of Erskino
College was delivered by Rev. J. M. Thom
son, of Selma, Ala., a son of Mr. Matthew
Thomson, formerly of this County, and n
grandson of Peter Keys, one of the first
settlers of this eection of country. There
were 8 graduates in Erskine College and 9
in tho Fomale College.

cropB of corn and cotton, which are very
fine. Capt. Peter McPhuil has tho finest
acre of cotton we have seen anywhere. It
will average twenty indira high, and is
well fruited with squares and bolls......Our
schools ro-opened on tho 5th ins*.There
is n large and interesting Sunday School at
this place.Our Debating Society meets
on the 10th inst.j and will debate the ques
tion, "Should woman bo equally educated
with man V Tho discussion will be public,
and all of the ladies are especially invited
to attend.Rev. William Hut to preaches
for us on the first and third Sundays of
each month. Ho is well liked throughout
tho bounds of bis work, and is accomplish

Fair Play.
After a drouth of nearly four weeks dry,
windy weather, we have been blessed with
copious showers, which have revived the
drooping crops, and they are now looking
well.The fields ore as white with blooms
as they generally are ten days later, and if |
the 8casona continuo the crop will be the
largest ever produced in this section.The
mall passed our placo on Friday last for tho
first time from Anderson to WestnriniNVsr,
but we were disappointed in not receiving
any except the Anderson papers. Wo' sup
pose the reason was on account of tho car
rier having more mail than he could bring.
Wo hope to get our mall in the future, cr a
chango in tho route. Wo believe a chango
can bo made to the advantage cf tho people,
along both lines and the contractor, by j
dividing the route, and running one from |
Anderson by Audcrsouville, Shallow Ford
and back to Anderson, and one from West
minister hy Bachelor, Fair Play, Townville,
Oakway and back to Westminister. By
this means the contractor w;ill cut off tho
distance between Fair Piny and Anderson- |
ville 13 miles, over which thcro lo no
office, and 7 urila? from Shallow Ford to
