OnJtxtr Culture.
It is the universal custom in the South to
rrow onions from the set or immature I <
mion of the previous year's growth. As
his season tho price of sets wUl bo very
ugh, wo would direct tho attention of our
gardeners to the fact that by proper culturo
arge onions can be raised from the seed* the
irst season. This is true of all the varie
les, but an Italian variety, called tho New
iVhite Queen, is said to give better results
han any other, producing by July 1st
>ulbs two Inches through, and of very fine
lavor. To produce a crop of onions from
ho seed thc first season, it is necessary to
low the seed in clean and very rich soil ;
)therwise you will not be paid for your
rouble. Use well .-ottci stable manure,
ind be sure to get in thc f>?ed as carly aa
>ossible in the Spring, no rn -.Uer if it is
iver so cold and unpleasant ; for if onions
lo not get a good growth before the bot,
n v weather, tho crop is sure to bo failure.
Thin them out carly, md keop the Boil mel
ow and clear of weeds, and it your seed is
;ood you will have a large crop. Sow in
ballow drills not less than a foot apart.
When tho onions are three or four inches
ligh, thin so that they will atand two inch
is or more apart, according to kind. Dls
;urb the roots of onions as little as possi
ble, either in thinning or hoeing, and never
inn rnrth t-owsrds them io cover them. Thc
lets are grown by sowing the seed thickly
n drills on poor land, and as they gene
rally sell from six to so ven dollars per
mabel in tho Spring, we believe it would
say Borne of our enterprising farmers to
:ry tho experiment of raising for market.
The American varieties are much inferior
o tho European in sweetness and mildness
}f flavor os well as in size. The finest va
rieties come from Italy. The New Whit?
3ue*n we have already mentioned. The
Slant Rocco, of Naples, ia the finest of
them all, producing in Italy bulbs weigh
ing four pounds. We keep Ae seeds of
both of these varieties. It should be men
tioned, however, that lt is difficult matter
to keep these varieties from rotting. An
other fine variety of onion is tho English
Potato onion. This produces bulbs In
clusters .under tho ground, and is a very
early variety. Ii is much esteemed where
it is known. We offer I wo dollars and a
half as a premium for the beet peck of
onions from our seeds or sets, samples re
turned. We will deliver any assorted bill
of Seeds amounting to five dbhYrs (not in
cluding potatoes) free of transportation at
any depot on tho Q. & C. or tho Air Line
Railroad.

PB- WE d?sira to inform the public g?n
erai' of oar prospectus for this year.
While ve ?xe thankful to all for their llb??
rsl ehsre of patronage bestowed upon us
daring the hut ?"ow yean, we feel satisfied
th nt we bare fully merited our great success.
It was due to no especial good fortune, but
the result of a combination of causes
principal ly of which is, our strict cash sys
tem. We have to sustain no loses', run no
rilke, but receive the cash for every article
sold. As our expenses are small, compared
with tho amount of business we transact a
small margin will suffice, and we firmly be
lieve in the maxim, "mako alow haste to be
rich."
While at all times we offer greet bar
gains to our many customers, we shall adopt
for this year the metropolitan idea of hav
ing "Special Sales in certain Departments."
We have no doubt that it will be successful,
for the ladies will Boon Und out that if wo
have a "Special Salo" in Embroideries, for
instance, for one week, the low prices for
the time being aro "Special," and much be
low regular value. It thus creates a mu
tual interest, for while wo are selling those
goods at "Spacial Prices," we will sell twice
as many of them ; and by buying twice es
much as wo used to, we certainly will buy
cheaper. Our inaugural sale will last thirty
days, beginning February 1st, and in order
to introduce this system will be exception
ally grand, our wbolo stock of Winter
doods arc to be offered-in spite of the re
cent advances-at lower prices than ever,
md wo hope our many friends will come
and look, if nothing more.
For the coming season, besides an IM
MENSE STOCK OF DEY GOODS, wo
ihall have a bno of Ladle?, Hisses' and
Childrens' SHOES that is unsurpassed in
this State, tho orders for which we have
riven already, as each pair is made to our
order and warranted.
We shall also have a completo lino of
?.-amples of Cloths and Cassim ere*1 up to
the very finest-and make to order at. kinds
af garments for gentlemen in the very la
test styles.
Oar stock of Millinery Goods shall be
complete, thus supplying a long needed
want-an effort that we know the ladies
will appreciate.' Everything that is desira
ble and new, we intend to show it, and our
stock shall bo first-class in every particular,
and our prices alwaya the very lowest.
