The City Com of Columbia has lsvled
a tax of $1 on every $100 worth of property
in thc city, which amount is necessary to
defray the current expenses of the city gov
ernment. The tax in Anderson is only 151

Ur. J. C. Winter killed and brought to
.torn on last Monday the largest and most
venomous looking snake thai we have ever
seea among the natives of thia section. It
was s little over five feet tis inches long,
and about fivo inches in drcumference,
with 9 dark, scaly, red back and bright cop
per color beneath. Its head waa largo and
flat, with a neck somewhat smaller, than
the head or body. It was certainly a very
unusual snake, and made its appearance at
a very unusual season of tho year. Mr.
Winter found it in a rand bar on his place
some fifty yards from tho river. A great
many persons viewed the dead snake but
none of them were able to name it.

tho fourth year of bis pastorate of tho An
derson Baptist Church, and during the
three years past be bas preach sd 259 ser
mons, delivered 175 lectures and addresses,
and paid 1,830 pectoral visite. Buring his
pan terato the Gb arch lias received 83 mem
bers by baptism and 25 by letter. Tbs son
tribu? ions of the Church and Sunday
School for missions during this period have
been $1,879.82, and for all purposes com
bined I5.G89.90. During tills time he has
also been tho Superintendent of th? Sunday
School, and has done a great deal of work
in it. His record for thia period <s certainly
deserving of congratulation.
There will bo an adjourned meeting of
the farmers of Anderson County in the
Court House on to-morrow, Friday, the
10th Instant, at ll o'clock, os signified in
the call of Col. T. H. Russell, the president,
which was published last week. Tho Sen
ator and Hepresentatl ves of this County are'
requested to be present, and all persons In
terested In agriculture. This is the meeting
. which wes primarily. called for the purpose
of considering the phosphate question last
winter, and hos from tiree to tim? held
meetings einco. The meetlog on -Friday
will probably-look after the samo subject,

The Sapremo Court has just decided tho
case of tho State Savings and Insurance
Bank of Anderson, 8. CL, appellants, vs.
Marshall 13. Gaines, respondent, which in
volved tho right of a son of- ? deceased
father to claim a braestead exemption ia
tho share of such son In the estate against
his creditors, The Court dismissed the
appeal, and bald that tho son can claim
homestead exemption against his creditors
in lands which he' inherits in common
with others. Wo have not seen tho decis
ion, and therefore cannot tell whether the
exemption, only applies-where the son is
living upon tho Ianda c.* not. In tho pres
ent case tho' son was living upon the lands
in which ho claimed homestead.

Wo learn th"t tho Atlanta and Charlotto
Air Lino Railroad Company ha7o offered a
premium of a silver pitcher for tb? best field
of gross, either clover, timothy, blue grasa
or herd's grass, along the line of their rail
road, grown in any county in South Caro
lina. Tho field must be in full view of the
oars and contain not leas than eight ceres.
Other railroads .in tho State might follow
the good example of the Air Line Railroad
with profit, inasmuch as their business
would bo increased in proportion to the in
crease of tho productions of th? country
through which lt passes. A premium of
$100 in cash would insure a general and
lively competition, and besides remunera
ting both the giver of and th? competitors I
for the prize, it would add to tho beaut/ of J

think I have deserted you, but, really, I
have been so much on the "go" that I have
not had much time for business. ,
I failed to report the murder which was
committed ic our little "burg" on tho night
of the 2Gth ultimo, and which your Town
vLlle correspondent reported. He ia so very
nearly correct in his statement of fhciMa
tho case that I shall say nothing about it,
mere than it was a most diabolical deed.
Whiskey and a naturally, bad disposition
were tho causes of tho murder. Bradberry
surrendered himself, and is now confined in
tho Walhalla jail, but Osborne Is still at
large. Some of tho people hero and in the
Fork have been keeping ? sharp lookout
for him. So lar nothing has been heard
from him? though it ia thought, by como
that he ia still concealed somewhere in tho
Fork, which I doubt very much. Osborne
owes tho gallows his'Ufe, and, if caught, ho
should bo mado to settle bb account with.

I sm glad to learn that your town has

only hope that she may in the future still
Increase her trade. Tho np-oountry is rap
idly increasing in wealth and population,
and it is destined to become a thriving sec
tion. We have a good people-industrious
and thrifty ; a fertile soil and a healthy
climate; besides, we have a good Demo
cratic party, that bas not outlived its use
fulness, and a people that intend to support
thai party. What more could wa ask?

Tho chairman stated the object of the
meeting, after which Mr. E. M. Geer sub
mitted the following preamble and r?solu-,

wero unanimously adopted :

this meeting for the purpose of consultation
and arranging the best pinn for conducting
tho free common schools for the present
year; and, whereas^ wo highly commend

Retched, That tho pay of teachers be per
capita, 1st, 2nd arid third grades, respective
