THE controversy botween Gen. Gary
nuu Senator Hampton over the contest of
1076 ls as ill-tinvnl as it is unfortunate.
The people know that wo carried the
State in that memorable canvass, and aro
satisfied that lt was., done legitimately
and properly. It is post, and wo do not
caro to hoar any moro about it. In our.
opinion the subject ought hot to have
bern re-opened, and now, as it bas been
revived, tho neaw best thing for all- of
tho parties concerned in it to do is to
hush it up as soon as posible.
THE f nco law was amondod so es to
apply to the whole of Sparenburg Coun
ty, beginning on the first of January,:
1881, and to EO much of O cone o County,
as lies south of tho Air Lino Railroad, be-/
ginning in January, 1881,- provided a ma
jority of tho citizens living within, that
territory vote in favor of tho chango after
thirty days' notice of the olectiou, which
Is to be held as soon as seventy-five real
estate owners petition for it. The fonce
in Oconeo County is io be placed on the
north of tho Air Line Railroad, if that
Road will pay fifty dollars per milo for
the fencing, and in that caso tho right of
~cy sf th? Jws?ruod is to bo a lawful |
fence, other wino the fence is to lie' placed I
on tim South" of ihe liai?rona. Xho law
was also extended to all of '.l.reor_vlllo
County south of the Air Lino Railroad,
to take oiTcct on the first of Mardi, pro
vided this Road will pay fifty dollars pev
mile for tho fencing, in reit,." "?'for which
its right- of way is to be made ? lawful
fence. The law was likewise extended
to all of Plckons County .lying south of
the Air Lino Railroad,. to take effect on !
tho first of March next, provided the Air
Line pays fifty dollars per milo for tho
fence, and the County'of Anderson is to
pay ono-half of the balance,' which will
probably bo four hundred dollars for the
part of this County. Tho County of
Plckcus is to keep tho fonce uo in future.
This arrangement was consented to by
tho entire Anderson delegation, because,
our upper lino fonco will bo to ro-bulld
next year if the law lc not extended, and
lt waii thought bettor to pay about four
hundred dollars now and havo tho fence
forever provided for, than to pay ono
thousand to fifteen hundred again next
year and bavo to koep tho fence-up in
future. Thus it" will bo seen tho law is
gradually extending, and will, beforo
runny years, embrace tho wholo of tho
best agricultural counties in tho Rtatc,
