A. post office, known as Varcnnes, has
been re-established at the residence of Col.
J. W. Norris on the old General's Road,
five or six miles south of this place, with
the Colonel as post master.
The Palmetto Rifles will gjvo a hop at
the Waverly House on next Monday night,
and every arrangement necessary to mako
it a success is being made. About two hun
dred guests havo been invited.

Thc churches of the town were all closed
on Sunday except tho Melodist and Bap
tint. Tho coneregations at thse, however,
were very small, not numbering moro than
twenty-five or thirty in either church.

Adonis Dobbs, (colored,) living on plan

ship, has caught thia reason one hundred
and* twenty-seven 'possums, besides a doz
en or two of skunks, This is ahead of any
thing wo havo heard of yet.
A heavy rain fell on last Saturday night
and Sunday, and tho water-courses in this
County were very much swollen in conse
quence. Tl? mill dam of Mr. Carwilo at
thc old Norris mill placo, and Boveral bridg
e-j in the County were washed away.
An aged maiden nister of Mr. John M.
? 'arv. ile died on last Friday, and was buried
on Saturday at Flat Rock. She had been
quite feeble for some months, though she
had been confined to ber bed for only three
days immediately preceding her death.

Wo understand that there ls a floating
bar room, fixed by in a small fiat-boat, that
has been running vp and down tho Savan
nah River for several months past, and that
liquor of a most inferior quality hos been
dealt out to the inhabitants on both sides of
the River in exchange for teed cotton, ?fcc.
This trafic has boen carried on principally
with tho people of Abbcvillo and Elbert
counties.
The store house and stock of goods of
Mr. A. M. Erwin, at Antreville, in Abbe
ville County, about two miles from the An
derson line, was destroyed by fire on last
Thursday night. Wu have not been able to
a- certain the exact cause of the fire, but
are informed that it wes probably caused
by tho ignition of matches by rats. Mr.

Tba lecture of ROT. W. H. Strickland In
Temperance Hall on Tuesday evening was
indeed a fine one, and was mach enjoyed
by those present. KU subject, "The Digni
ty of Labor, or XIow to Make a Fortune."
is one in which we have been deeply inter
ested for some time past, especially the lat
ter < 11use It was ably handled by the
speaker, and while be did not tell us exact
ly bow wo might realize tho fortune, he
certainly eatlsfled us, as well aa all others
present, thai labor Is dignified and honora
ble in nil men and women In all conditions
of society. Tho report that gained currency
on tiie streets several days previous to the
delivery of tito lecture that it was a repeti
tion of one delivered at this place by Mr.
Strickland on a previous occasion, was an
erroneous one. The lecture was entirely
new to the people of Anderson, and one
of the most entertaining they have ever had
tho opportunity of listening to. We hopf
to bo able to present cyr readers with a
synopsis of tho lectnro in our next issue.
Having satisfactorily adjusted our insur
ance, we will resume business aa soon as we
can get in Ilia goods and have necessary
