Mrs. J. C. Keys had five pounds of butter
of her own make ut the Fair last week a
year old that was as fresh atid sweet as
when first made. It was preserved by being
packed in salt in an air-tight vessel.
The EgypHnu cotton on exhibition last
week, ana which was claimed to be imper
vious to boll-worm, rust, drought, hail and
everything elso of the kind, turned out to
bo only a species of the Jamestown weed.
Tho Executive Committee of Pomona
Grange, P. H., will meet on next saleday,
immediately after Sheriffs sales are over, In
Mr. John B. Watson's store, for the trans

Mr. John II. Burns, of tho Fork, town

Mauldin and L. P. Smith will hold a meet
ing at Mt. Moriah Church, five miles south
of Anderson, on Saturday, November 8, in
uid of tho colored people. Topics of inter
est to Sunday School workers will bo dis
cussed. \
Col. L. E. Campbell, of Broadaway town
ship claims to have the most accommodating
bens in tho State. He says that ho went
home from Anderson recently and informed
them of tho decline in tho price of eggs, and
that they immediately reduced the sizo of
their eggs to correspond with tho price. He
bad ninoof them at tho Fair Inst vook rang
ing in size from a pea to a guinea egg.
Mrs. P. A. Wilhite and ber accomplished
daughter, Miss Mary, will please accept our
thanks for the premium tunned peaches and
blackberries. They were delightful to tho
taste, and possessed their natural flavors to
a remarkable degree. Miss Mary hail more
articles on exhibition in tho household de
partments than any other one person, and
received the largest number of premiums.
A call meeting of Mountain Creek sub
Grange will beheld at their Hall on next
Saturday, at IQ o'clock a. m., at which a
committee from Pomona Grange, P. H.,
will be present to consider some matters of

Tho very heavy rains of week beforo last
did considerable damage to tho corn crops
in the Seneca, Togalo and Deep Creek bot
toms by overflowing those streams. Tho
crops of several farmers are said to bo an ,
aim >st entire loss, os the water stood on
them sevoral days, souring tho corn and
rendering it almost wholly unfit for uso.
Wc hope, howover, that tho loss is not as
serious as at first represented.

Mrs. Scotia Brown, wife of Mr. Samuel
Brown, Jr., died at tito residence of her
husband in thc town of Anderson on hut
Sunday morning after a loon and painful
illness, from which she suffered greatly,
and was confined to her bed for about three
\eare. Mrs. Brown was a daughter of the
late Br. C. L. Gaillard, of this County, and
was a lady of Gue education and culture.
For her many excellent traits of character
she was admired and beloved by her asso
ciates and friends. She was patient and re
signed in her suffering, ana displayed in
practico the sincerity of her Christian pro
fession!! under trials which very few are
called upon to t utter. She leaves a husband
and live children with whoso grief tho sym
pathy of a large circle of relatives and friends
ls joined. Their sorrow ls not, however,
without consolation, for they realize that
death has but called her spirit from a world
of sorrow and pain to one of rest And joy
forever. Death had no pain for th "depart
ed one, but came rather as an angel of rest
to relieve her of Buffering and grant her en
trance into rest. The funeral services were
performed in Grace Episcopal Church by
ltev.W. H. Hankel of Pendleton, after which
the remains were placed to rest in the Bap
tist Church cemetery.
Col. Brown's War Tony.
Among the attractions at the Fair, and
especially to tho survivors of McGowan's
Brigade, may be mentioned Col. Brown's
marsh lackey, which was in all the cam
paigns of the ,5Army of Northern Virginia,"
from the battle of Gaines' Mdl to the sur
render at Appomattox, and whose history
is closely connected with "Bob," her rider,
who is aine a survivor. Though not
handsome as tho other horses, she has a
moro eventful history.
Tho County Fair.
Tho Annual Fair of the Farmers' and
Mechanics' Fair Atsoclation of Anderson
County oarae off last week, a.id was very
successful, considering the unfavorable start
given it by the bad weather. The exhibits,
though not so numerous os heretofore, were
of excellent quality, and did great credit to
tho people of this County in the various de
partments. The needle and fancy work,
tho household, the poultry, the liv? stock
and tlio field crop departments were weii
filled by a great variety of exhibits. To
I particularize exhibits in these several de
partments, would bo to make distinctions
where it is difficult to ascertain which was
most deserving, and therefore wo will con
tent ourselves with ascribing excellence to
oil of them. Tho attendance was better this
year than it was lost, and, as a consequence,
the Directors announce that, despite the bad
weather, they made enough from gate
money to pay all of the expenses of thc ex
hibition. President Crayton and J. L.
Tribblo, Esq., the Secretary, have reason to
congratulate themselves upon succeeding so
well under so many difficulties. Our peo
ple oufdit to patronize the Fair moro gen
erally, both by Bending articles for exhibi
tion and by giving their own attendance.
Wc hope that tho ladies and gentlemen of
the County will begin in time to prepare for
next year, that the display may bo greater,
and thereby increase tho attractions to the
crowd.

Our farmers now think they will make
about two-thirds of a cotton crop and about
half a corn crop.Oat sowing has com
menced, and from present indications a
large quantity will he put in. This is a
move in the right direction, and we hope
our v.'h:;!e country will adept it.The
washing away of tho Abbeville side of the
bridge at Erwin's mills caused considerable
inconvenience to the traveling public, but
Mr. Erwin has remedied the evil by put
ting in a boat, so that parties can still cross
free.Two colored men, Tulley Beaks and
Code Ellis, have been lodged in Abbeville
jail, charged with burning Bigby's born.
.One of uur fair friends, while attending
the Fair, had her portnionio and contents
stolen, which wo don't consider at all fair
dealings with o? :r fair friend ; and if the
party who took it does not return it, we will
