A practical farmer who has been visiting different portions of tho County during the past ten days, gives it as his opinion that then? will ho a larger crop of cotton pro duced in this County this year than there has been any year since the war. Wo had tho pleasure of meeting on lost Monday Rov. H. T. Morton, of Greenville, who was in Anderron in tho interest of thc canse of education. Ile is an educated and polished gentleman, and has practical ideas about the manner of conducting tho public schools. Col. E. M. Ruckcr, Gen. W. W. Humph reys and Maj. E. B. Murray made speeches at tho meetings held in tho interest of the Savannah Valley Railroad at Cross Roads, In Magnolia township, and Mt. Carmel, in Calhoun township, in Abbeville County, on Tuesday and Wednesday last. Mr. S. A. Arnstein, of Camden, formerly of Anderson, and ono of tho proprietors of the popular New York Cash Store, is visit ing in our midst. He oxpresscs himself as well pleased with his new home, no goes to Seneca City to rest awhile from his labors mid to drink its mineral water. Tho Dime Readings under tho auspices of tho Ladies Sowing Society of tho Baptist Church aro very pleasant occasions. Thc social features of tho entertainments alone make them especially attractivo for tho young people- Tho ono on last Monday night was snell a decided success that an other will bo given at thc samo placo on Monday evening next. Hon. B. F. Crayton, President of tho Ani'nson Farmers' and Mechanics'Asso cin -ion, has appointed tho following delo g?tes to the joint meeting of tho State Grange nnd Stnto Fair Association, which convenes in Chester on the 12th of next month: Col. J. W. Norris, Gen. W. W. Humphreys, Capt. P. K. McOnlly, Maj. E. B. Murray, and Messrs. S. Blecklcy und J. Willet Pr?vost. It ls generally conceded that tho com crop throughout tho Stat? is cut short nt least two-thirds. The condition of tho crop"in this County is by no means exceptional. In many counties it is a great deal worse than with us. Tho prospects of thc cotton crop ia not so gloomy. With favorable seasons, it ls generally thought that there will bo an average crop, made in tho State; and tho same will apply to this County also. One by ono tho old and useful citizens of our country aro passing away. This week lt ls our sad duty to record tho death of Mr. Wilson nail, which occurred nt his resi dence, about three milos sr-th of this pince, on last Wednesday afternoon, 23d instant nfter a long and painful illness, which he boro with fortitude and resignation. Mr. Hall was n nativo of Anderson Connty, mid had always pursued the quiet lifo o tho farmer. Ho was always recognized as ono of our most reliable and useful mon, and throughout his long Ufo enjoyed thc friend- hip and confidence of all who knew him. Ho leaves an aged wifo and several children to mourn their lora, who have the 8yni(>athy of many relatives and friends. The law prohibiting tho caging of young mocking birds scorns to be a nullity iirthis immediate section. Wo arc sorry to soo it, but it Is nevertheless the case. The mock ing bird is tho sweetest singer of all the birds, and its natural disposition is to huger about our homes, which lad renders thc caging of them entirely unnecessary. Our homes aro cheered and enlivened most when their sweet notes arc caroled from the tree-top and among tho shrubbery of our yards; and to cage them is not only a vio lation of law, but will ultimately annihi late tho species'. By some means or other tlic practice thould be stopped, and if noth ing else wiii do it tho enforcing of the !?? will. The penalty is a fine of ten dollars for every bird caged, one-half of which goes to the informer. Kxtra Trula*. AKDBHSOS, S. C., July 20, 1879. In response to thecall of the School Com missioner, quit a number of the Teachers of the County assembled in the Court-room to-day. The object of tho meeting was tho organization of a Teachers' Association. Commissioner Todd was called to thech',:r, und J. M. Tickle was made secretary. Complying with tho request of tho chair man, Rev. S. Lander, D.D., addressed the meeting, brielly stating tho importance of an association of tho kind contemplated. He was followed by tho chairman, who urged the Teachers to permanent organiza tion. Dr. Lander, Messrs. H. G. Recd and J. M. Pickle were appointed a committee to draw up a constitution. On motion of Mr. Mc Illroy tho chairman was added. During the absence of the committee, Maj. J. B. Moore wus called on for a speech, to which ho responded in an eloquent ud Jress of enco lragemcnt to tho Teachers present to go forward in uniting themselves in an association, thc good results of which, if properly carried out, aro incalculable. A unanimous vote of thanks was tendered to Maj. Mooro for his address. After thc adjournment of thc Associa lion, Rev. H. T. Morton, from the city of Greenville, was called on to address the meeting. Mr. Morton has had largo expe rience in teaching, having supervised graded schools in St. Louis, Mo., more recently in tlreenville, 8* C., and teems to be well posted in the art of imparting instruction. lie came here, a' he announced in the open ing of his address, to speak principally on Hie subject of agriculture in connection svith literary pursuits, but ascertaining thc mdienco was composed chiefly of Teachers md Trustees, ho confined himself to the subject of teaching. Ho said practical knowledge is what wo need ; that there is ;oo much dependenco on text books ; that ext books aro good in their place, but that ?nowledgo may bo much more effectually inparted orally and by illustrations on the blackboard und tho uso of maps ; that or Jiography, reading, arithmetic and geogra phy should be principally taught on black board and maps ; that schools should be, md may be, made a pleasant place; that instead of a shrinking from, tho pupil wili lelight to go, because all along thc ascent af the hill of Science he realizes the practi cal uso of education. Such was tho drift of his discourse. Mr. Morton proposes to organize Teachers' In stitutes in our 8tate, for the purjiose of in troducing the Normal system of teaching. Ho says in the Northwest this system is being almost universally adopted. The following is the constitution os adop ted : 1. This body shall bo known as the An derson Teachers' Association. '2. The officers shall boa President, three Vice Presidents, and a Secretary and Treas urer. 3. Any white Teacher of Anderson Coun ty, holding a certificate from the Board of Examiners, muy, by subscribing to the con st i tut ion, become a member; any other white Teacher of the County by n majority vote. The Board of Examiners, State Sen ator and Representatives aro ex-ofllcio mem bers. 4. The officers of tho Association shall constitute an Executive Committee, whose duty it shall bc to arrange the exercises of thc meetings, and also to call extra meet ings. ft. The regular meetings of thc Associa tion shall bo on tho last Saturday in March, June, September and December. Each meeting shall decido where tho next shall bo held, tho first one to take placo at An derson Court- HouWt R. W. Todd, Dr. S. Lander, W. T. Mc Elroy, G. E. Prince and J. M. Tickle wero elected respectively President, first Vico President, second Vice President, third Vice President, and Secretary and Treasurer. On motion the meeting adjourned. J. M. PICKLE, Sec. As tho Grange (Pendle ton Grange) met at tho sanio timo and placo n largo concourso of ladies and gentlemen were present. The Grange held its meeting early in the morning, nnd disposed of sev eral matters ci* importance, niter which the Company assembled for tho purpose of do ciding upon a programme for tho celebra tion ot ita anniversary, August 13,1.179. lt was determined to have a basket picnic cn that day, and to have speaking besides the regular exercises of tho Company. Gen. J*..uc8 Conner, tho distinguished gentleman for whom tho Company was named, was invited to deliver an address, and it is con fidently expected that ho will be present. A committee was appointed to invite other 0leakers also, but I nm unable to Bay who joy are. A Grange dinner was then spread out, which proved amply sufficient, not only for the Grangers, but for tho Company and visitors also. After dinner the Conner Light Dragoons did themselves much credit by tho prompt and soldierly manner in which they per formed the exercises of thc drill. Truly tho doy was a pleasant one, and tho interest manifested by thc members, and their many friends, in these two organisa tions demonstrates beyond a doubt that Garvin township la wide nwttkc to thoso matters affecting the prosperity and we'fure of tho peopki. ??ai* ?y Binni! sections of this iownship havo not yet been blessed with rains.
