When a town warden buys a horso and buggy and rides around town every day er two for a month or so before thc day of election, people naturally conclude that lie is a rnndidatc for re-election. It is not u bad idea for iiq>crH to keep cool over their differences. We regret to announce the death of Mrs. Sallie Brcnzcalc, wile of Mr. 8. A. Rrea zcale, which occurred at the residence of her husband in the tow n of Abbeville on Tuesday, the 3rd Inst. Mrs. Brca/.eale was u daughter of thc late Rev. William McGee of this County, nnd leaves many relative's and friends in our midst who mourn her untimely death. She was nu excellent and amiable lady, who made friends wherever she went. On Wednesday her remains were interred, after appropriate funeral ser vices, in the family burying ground near the site of the residence of her father in this County. Tho services wore largely at tended by the relatives and friends of the deceased, who feel tho most sincere regret for the dvath of ono so dear to them. According to previous announcement, the eleventh anniversary of Anderson Division No. 1, Sons of Temperance, was celebrated by a public meeting in the Court House c'i Thursday evening last. At the appointed hour tho Divinion Hied out of Temperance Hall and marched in procession to the Court House, where they found a large audience awaiting them. After music by the Pnl metto Hund nnd prayer by Rev. J. K. Cnr li.sle, the Worthy Patriarch, Mr. Charles C. Langston, introduced in a short and appro priate speech Mr. H. G. Scudday as thc first speaker tor the occasion. After referring to the reorganization of the Division after the war, when the morals of the whole ! country were more or less corrupt and in temperance was rife, and to the great suc cesses that bad attended the efforts of the temperance workers, bc discussed in an able and instructive manner the subject of true human greatness. Rev. W. II. Strickland was next, introduced. He entertained the audience for nearly an hour in discussing thc objections generally entertained hythe public to organized opposition to intemper ance. His s]>ecch waa a very strong argu ment for the temperance workers, and was interspersed with au appreciable amount of humor. He held the close attention of the audience throughout his entire address, und evidently made a deep impression on their minds. At tho close of Mr. Strickland's speech, the meeting was closed by benedic tion by Mr. Carlisle. The Abbeville Medium has this to say in reply to our article about the ladies ot An derson and Williamston : Our neighbor has magnified n molehill into a mountain, and written n grout deal ubout nothing. Our crusade paragraph was not intended aa "a slur to the Indies of two relined ami intelligent communities." We simply gave circulation to a rumor that reached our ears of the intention of the fair daughters of Anderson to "l>eard thc lion in his den" anti tmbduo thc demon of in temperance nt every sacrifice. We did not question their motives or improperly esti mate their zoul, but we doubted the success of their crusade-only this and nothing more. Wc gavs the item ns a matter of news. We heard it at Belton on our way home from a recent visit to Greenville, nnd lind no notion tbnt "ninety-nine out of n hundred renders" would have read it with vulgar suspicion or take it ns at all reflect ing upon the Indies of either place named in the paragraph. This is au near an apoto y ns our contem porary knows how* to come, and ?jl.ows that Iiis article was written inconsiderately and without any foundation for what his imag ination built out of some meaningless joke of some person who was "craming" the editor with important "dots" for his jour nal. Considering everything, we suppose the ludies orght to forgive him, and wc will join them in doing so if he will not omit to come to us as an oxehnngc when he replies to us, and will in future give no further of fence by repeating such nonsensical state ments with an air of reality. Ilonea ruth. This place is putting on a new, clean face. Painting and whitewashing are engaging the time of several of the clerks and others who are not engaged in farm pursuits, nnd from whut we learn almost every house, out house and store room, is to undergo a dressing ero the good work ceases.Crops are pretty clean, and generally look well. The acreage of cotton is largely in excess of the corn, and more attention it seems ia being paid lo ita culture. Some small grain which has been already cut appears well filled. Mr. D. S. McCullough has harves ted several aerea of extremely fine oats, upon one nnd one-sixth acres of which he I has over thirteen hundred sheaves, and calculates to thresh over one hundred bush els. Can ?ny other section beat this?. Prof. H. G. Reed lins yiven his pupils hcli day, which they propose enjoying in tho wuy of a fishing party on Thursday, the 5th inst., with others who will join them in making the day pleasant.Quite an amount of sickness in the community, but no contagion, except whooping cough, which, here, only respects those upon whom it has ouccd preyed. TYRO. A Tip-Top Picnic. Mu. EDITOR: Having enjoyed the pleas ure of attending a picnic given by Miss Kinma Moore's school last Saturday, May 31st, a day long to be remembered by those present, and it having proved a perfect suc cess, I ask room in your paper for a few '"dots" concerning it. The members of the school, with their camile*, assembled at thc academy, 14 miles southeast of this place, hearing baskets well supplied with judada, about 81 a. m. Before 9 o'clock the juvenile band removed to Archer's Creek, aplaco selected by Miss Moore-and a beautiful pince it was. There wc were joined by one of tho Trustees, and a family from High Shouls, among whom was thc teacher fiom the High Shoals vi cinity. The baskets were placed under a venerable old white oak, and Ashing was no?" commenced-the small u:-.r.~. fishing io thc creek ami the largo ones on dry land, the latter using the more energy. A group strolled down the stream, lauded on an island, joined in playing "mumble-peg," but continued fishing. Aboii.- ".1 a. m. we strolled back to thc venerable oak. Between 12 and 1 p. m. the baskets were opened mid their luscious con tents profusely spread, to which all were cordially welcomed. Then came an impor tant part of the picnic. I inmediately after our sumptuous repost, i tho talented and promising young law stu dent, Mr. C. E. Waxdlaw, was called upon to display his elocutionary powers, to which request he kindly acceded. His large und appreciative audience was highly amused aa well as instructed. At the close of bis address the lamh-liko crowd returned lo the Ara. Tho remainder of thc afternoon was spent in a social dance, under the music of Mr. Green, for which he bas mady thanks. At 5 p. tn. the picnic ended, and the crowd dispersed, exulting at thc success of Miss Moore's first picnic. A more pleasant and sunny-fueed group I have never met. Enron s If you will indulge inc a Utile While I will give your readers a few fads regarding Droadnway Division, Sons of | Temperance, a well known organization in this County. Ita place of meeting is well known to the community to he iti a hall near Neal's Creek Church, because the hen Ada) results of this organizion are well known. This Division, I believe, was organized on the 14th day of October, 1874. with perhaps about thirty-five members, about one third of whom were Indie*. They were larsons of Integrity of purpose, and their firm de termination and the patriotic loyalty which they bore to the honored cause hus insured them c success far beyond their most san guine expectations. Our community cnn now with pleasure ascribe to them the plaudit) "Well done." Thc lovely and ac complished women hove adorned the hull by their presence and smiles. With these and many other incentives thc men could do nothing but show their allegiance lo the society. Io consequence of tin? the Div!?1 ion stood th? stormy campaign of 1870, when many of thc societies ceased to work. You will naturally bo lead to ask, What bas this organization done extraordinarily ? Your attention is directed to a few facts which arc easily perceived, und arc not matters of insignificance : (Jood houses of a substantial class have taken the places of dilapidated ones, fut horses of poor ones, pleasant, felicitous and proud homes of de graded and unpleasant ones, und, as a gen tleman recently remarked, "yards formerly filled with litter and plank aro now piled up with bales of cotton." Is not this au achievement? The Division has boen one of the malu auxiliaries in bringing about this reformation of our aff'uirs. The follow ing convers?t ion recently tonk place between two prominent gentlemen who were travel ing through the community in which this society is located. Mr. W. remarked to Mr. P.: "What a great chungo lias taken place in this connnunity since I passed hereabout throe years ago. Do you uttribute it to Democratic rule?" Mr. P. very sensibly answered : "In part only ; that temperance society at Neal's Creek hos had something to do with it." On last Saturday night a pound supper waa given in the hall, after the exercises of the Division were over, which, though has tily gotten up, resulted in a complete suc cess. From nn hour to two hours after tho sun had disappeared behind the western horizon could be seen the members coining in every direction with their baskets ; und Mr. Editor, from thc way thc carriers leaned sideways and pa :ted, wc were assured there was "stuff" in them-and stuff it proved to bc. After thc table had been prepared on it could Le seen delicacies, substantials, nick-nacks and. In fact, everything of which mind coukl conceive or heart desire. It seemed to mc it would almost bc a sin to destroy the beauty of it; but when our ef ficient W. P. extended the invitation to re plenish the inner man, wo, like Adam, could not resist the temptation, hut felt constrained to taste. Taste-if you hud seen Judge M., tho Major and the Captain at the table you would not have called it tasting. Wo expect shortly io sec them on crutches with their feet on their shoes. But why should an allusion be made to them particularly ? We ure all ns deep in the mud as they aro in tho mire. Surely, from the amount of good eatables brought, the ladies expected us to stay there a week. Upon the whole it was ono of the most pleasant and best conducted affairs in the way of a hastily gotten up supper it has ever been the good privilege of the writer to enjoy. Oh, that there was one every Saturday night ! After all had participated in the social pleasures of thc occasion, the ludios piled hack into their baskets thc nice cakes, A.c., which were left from supper, and then the large crowd dispersed, ali of whom were glad they belonged to old Droadaway Division. On Friday evening, thc 30th inst., a party of ladies and gentlemen assembled at the residence of Col. E. M. Rocker for the pur pose of spending a few hours in social en joyment. No more suitable pia could have been selected than at this genial and I hospitable home. Each member of the party met a most hearty ami cordial reccp I tion at tho hands of the Colonel and his good lady. Free access was givon to every department of the home that would tend to accelerate and heighten thc festivities of thc occasion. Who could have done otherwise than spond those hours pleasantly? Thc party .vas composed of thc elite of Ander son and Greenville. By 10 o'clock thc guests had all assembled, und on command given by joviul Joe, Jack caine to the front, and after a few strokes of that familiar old air, the ladies mysteriously appeared ele gantly masked. Oh ! how strikingly love ly ! Now came the difficult problem to dc cide-which was t'other. For a moment deathly silence prevailed, then a rush for u partner for the time being. After a short interval of timo was spent In walking, talk ing and courting, the ladies unmasked, and lo and behold ! Hie disappointed, blank countenances, when it was revealed to whom many of the young men ha oecn paying their attentions. Thc party, one and all, enjoyed themselves most ndmirahly, judg ing from appearances. Evenings spent in this manner will he green fpots, iver fresh in our memories. LOOK KI*. ON.
