A NOVEL ATTACK ON HOYALTY.
Mr Holier! Poel In tlx* Bolts o? ..JuiiluV
Without thc Marth.
prom the if. V. Evening Pott,
Since Pru m m el's tiff with the Prince
of Wales, which was embelished by thc
memorable "Who's your fut friend?"
put to a mutual acquaintance by way of
cutting the royal offender na be passed
there have been few instances when En
glish subjects have ventured upon pub
lic quarrels with members of tho family
of '.bc sovereign. An astonishing excep
tion has presented itse'.' >f which we
have now only tito opt-.ong incidents,
but which promises to extend into a re
markable and interesting history.
Sir Robert Peel lately made a speech
in thc House of Commons in which ho
pronounced some slighting allusions to
thc same exalted personngc. Ile ?poko
irreverently of him. that to say, not
as Prince of Wales, but as George thc
Fourth. Now Vanity Fuir, a publica
tion which is called a "society journal"
and is supposed in some occult way to
represent the royal family, took up Sir
Robert's remarks with no Itttlo beat.
Vanity Fair, in spite of its title, docs not
think Air. Thackeray's example by any
means ?-. proper ono. Or rather it prob
ably holds that while one of them "dash
ed literary fellers" might be permitted
to speak ill of the "first gentleman in
Europe," and thc offence bc passed by in
contemptuous silence, such immunity is
by no means to be conceded to a mem
ber of Parliament speaking within ear
shot of Buckingham Palace. Therefore
Wittily Fair has gently delivered itself to
the effect that Sir Robert Peel's speech
has very naturally given great offence in
consequence of his disrespectful allusion
lo George IV, and his personal remarks
upon the (?ueen, and .hat "several mem
bers of the royal family have declared
their intention Rover to take any notice
of Sir Robert for the ful ure."
To this in high dudgeon, Sir Robert
bas launched forth a Daming manifest?
which is perhaps thc boldest and sharp
est piece of writing over put in print by
a member of Parliament about any per
son or persons of the royal family. Two
hundred, or even one hundred years ago,
both Sir Robert and tho editor 'if Vanity
Fttir would long before this have been
cooling their heels ?n thc Tower. It is a
suggestive commentary on thc changed
usage and temper of the times that up to
this day nothing bas been done in re
gard to this curious attack, whatever
steps may bc contemplated for thc future.
Sir Robert shaped bia onslaught in the
form of n letter to tho editor, and pays
his compliments to thc latter gentleman
tn passing. It would bc a pity lo omit
or to cut thc last paragraph of this curi
ous missive, and wc therefore give spnee
to it aa follows :
"You appear to be instructed to make
mc a challenge, which, notwithstanding
thc channel through winch it comes, I ac
cept with great pleasure; and as you in
vite rae to a game, which two can play
at, one of thc parties in the contest may
prove a pungent critic of tho coming
K-Sc (Jo ; and by tho way, I would
advise you Btrongly, ns you nrofes." to bc
tho depository of thc Imperial confidence,
to bo a lillie :.?oro discreet in the circu
lation of your authorized versions of royal
messages, or they may get you into
trouble, dear Mr. Rowles. Eike many
others, I have put up with n good deal of
your insolence from time to time, and. as
your personalities have nothing in com
mon with the honorable and legit?malo
duties of journalism, you will lind me
now quito equal to tho occasion. Rut ns
in tho present instance you act as thc
plenipotentiary of royally, go and tel.
your master that I am not the sort of
man to bo smothered by imperial men
aces, nnd, unless I receive tho most am
pio satisfaction from the royal sources
which have made you'thcir most impudent
mouthpiece, I shall Bend a copy of your
statement, together with a copy ol my
reply, to tn?- Prince of Wnles mid to the
Duke of Cambridge. And, as you liuvo
published nnd circulated such a declara
tion of tho intentions of tho Royal family
with respect to my remarks in the House
of Commons, I sh nil avail myself of a
titting opportunity to publish and to pla
card tn Loudon nnd the Provinces, un
der thc heading of 'Sir Robert Peel and
thc rest of tho Royal family,' both your
official notification of tho royal message
aud my contemptuous acknowledge
ment."
It was necessary to get into tho nine
teenth century, and to get near tho end
of it at that, for an Englishman, and
such an Englishman, to publish so
daringa letter na this, and what is to
como of it will bo looked for with pro
found curiosity. To take activo notice
of it seoms impossible, to pass it with si
lence seems equally so, the Prince of
Wale? cannot iig'-t a subject, and alto
gether tho dilemma is one out of which
there appears to bo no dignified or be
coming path whatever. Tho mild dis
claimer of responsibility for Vanity Fair
that has been put forth touches only tito
outer edge of the matter. That Sir
Robert Peel contemplated and perhaps
chuckled over this embarrassment ns a
fruit of his amazing procedure is very
likclv to ho true; but if such is tho
fact it should be said that to inflict an
insult that cannot be resented is scarcely
to be accounted a proof of chivalry.
Goon WORDS OK ADVICE.-Phy
sicians say that every kind of cold, bron
chitis, diptherin, sore throat and pulmo
nary complaints are remarkably prevalent
now. Sensible people ought to reflect
that nine-tenths of these troubles arise
from provent&ble causes. Wot feet are
probably the first cause nf a good many
of them. There SH no excuso for any one
who catches cold from wet feet. Over
shoes aro cheap, nnd in this climate
they ought to bo worn all the time be
tween tho 1st of November and the lat of
May. It is never uafe without them, ex
cept in summer. Henry Ward Beecher
ascribes his robust health mainly to thc
wearing of overshoes ; and nil other men
who know how to tnko caroof tbcmaelvet
testify to tho same effect. Another c.: ti-e
of throat and lung diseases is insufficient
clothing. Girls and women who go "low
necked and abort-sleeved" to parties,
tako off their flannels to do so; ami
when consumption declares itself, won
der how they got it. A still more general
cause is ovcrheatintr nuit b-^ vcnu'Ation
indoors. Tho lungs, parched and pois
oned in tho house, ore in ill condition
?>.'breathe cold or moist air out doors,
arbonic-acid gas puts them in a ttate.
or'incipient inflammation before they
meet the fresh air at all. Attention to
these simple dictates of common reuse
would prevent, we believe, a largo pro
portion of the colds in this community
which do riot come from constitutional
."eakness or predisposition ; and in the
latter class of cases tho need of careful
watching is greater.
- A colored minister in Georgia was
brought to trial before bis church on a
charge of ate&ling bacon. After a num
ber of witnesses had been examined, the
deacons retired, and soon afterward re
turned the following .verdict : "Tho Rev.
Moses Rlcdso am nckwaittcd of do sin

'twas not abode dat su PI bod y else raiteh't

THE GROUND.-Tho Virginia (Nev.) Kn

by Captain Matt Canavan al thc New

is superintendent. Thc ball took place
at tho new station opened at thc depth
of 1,040 feet below tho surface. This
station is . lite as large as a;i ordinary
ball-room, well floored, walled in with
substantial timbers and hos qui ie a hdtv
ceiling. The station is cool i ad comfor
table, was appropriately decorated for
thc occasion, mid was lighted with lumps
suspended from the ceiling. Thc ladies
were dressed in calico ami the gentlemen
in corn iponditigly inexpensive raiment.
The fut ni lure WHS ill keeping with thc
place, and while there was furnished
everything necessary to comfort, nothing
very extravagant was seen. Never be
fore in thc United States-if anywhere
in the world-bas there been given a
ball, at the depth of nearly a quarter of a
milo beneath the surface of the earth.
There was no trouble about persons blip
ping into thc ball room without tickets.
It was a queer way, too, of going to a
hall this stepping upon a cage instead ?f
into a carriage, and being darted straight
down towards the ?entro of the earth in
stead of rolling off horizontally in the
usual way.

perhaps ; bul carving your own way up
thc mountains, you make each one lead
to another, and stand linn in that while
vou chop still another out. Men who
nave made fortunes are not those who
had $2,000 given thfiii to start willi, but
started fair with a well earned dollar or
two. Men who have by their exertions
acquired fame, have not been thrust into
popularity hy pull's, begged or paid for,
or given in a friendly spirit. Tiny
have outstretched their bands ami
touched thu public heart. Men who win
love do their own wooing, and I never
know a man to fail so signally as thc one
who bad induced bi-? affectionate grand

Whether you work for fame, for love,
for money, or for any thing else, work
with your hands and brain. Say "I

Never let any man have it to say, "I

SLURS OS WOMEN.-Of all evils pre

none more blighting in its moral effect!
than to speak lightly of (he virtues ol
women. Nor is there anything in wbicl
young men ar? so thoroughly uiislnkei
as thu low estimate they form of the in
tegrity of women. Not of their owi
mothers ami sisters, but. of others, win
they forget, are somebody else's mother
and sisters. As a rule, no person win
surrenders to this debusing habit is to lu
trusted with an enterprise requiring in
tegrity of character. Plain words shouh
be spoken on this point, for thc evil is i
general one, mid deep-rooted. If yinni)

they have no more right to measure al
other women by what they see of thesi
