trouble, Dr. J. W. Parker, President of
the I ion rd of Directors of Elmwood Cem
etery, kindly cunio forward and offered
them tito crest of the hill which crowns
the entrance to the cemetery. Moving
thc foundation and laying it on this lat
ter spot cost them thc sum of $585.
The marble portion of the monument
was made at Carrara, Italy, and it was
brought to Columbia in September, 1875.
Hy the terms of the contract, Messrs.
Muldoon, Walton & Co. were to be paid
$5,000 when the base was put up, and the
whole price, 10,000, was to be paid when
the monument reached Columbia. Hut
the Association not having raised that
sum, thc merely received the boxes, in
sured the monument for its full value,
and had it carefully stored away without
opening it even for inspection till they
could honestly claim il free fro u debt,
though tho contractors generously de
ducted $1,200 from the original price and
offered to put up the monument and wait
till the Association could raise the money.
The monument was utored in tho prem
ix - of Mr. Howie, lo whom they had to
pay $136 for storage. The insurance cos',
them $2(H. When the c hange from Radi
cal to Democratic rule occurred in the
Stale government, the Association began
to hope that they might erect the monu
ment ill the State Howie grounds, ami at
thc session of the Legislature for 1877-8,
they sont a petition to that body asking
permission to do so. This was not only
unanimously and cordially granted, hut
they passed an act directing thc Secretary
of State to advance in every way the in
terests of thc Association. A large num
ber of the members moreover contributed
one clay's pay to aid them. In 1878 thc
Legislature passed an act appropriating
$00(1 to help pay for the removal of thc
monument to the State House grounds.
Again many of the members contributed
one day's pay. Since thal time the work
has gone on rapidly and uninterruptedly
until now this beautiful memorial stands
complete and consecrated to its holy pur
pose. Il is a source of great gratification
that there has never been a drop of in
toxicating liquor to aid in paying for il,
nor has there even been n rallie for that
purpose by the sanction of the Hoard of
Directors. No means has ever been used
to raise money for il that tin most scru
pulous church man or religious person
could object to. The ladies will shortly
publish a correct statement showing from
whom the money was received and how
every cent was expended. The follow
ing summary shows the gross amount re
ceived :
Collected from all sources.$10,502.81
Interest on same. ARI..V.I

While tho monument remained here
before erection, tho Association paid in

Too LATE.-The following incident
took place in Washington Texas. Thoju
ry of a circuit court, before whom a miser
able wretch had been tried, returned a
verdict of "guilty," and suggested the
"whipping post." Tho court then ad
journed for dinner. Immediately after
dinner thc defendant's counsel without
consulting his unfortunate client, muved
for a now. trial and commenced reading
tho motion.
"Hold on 1" whispered tho client, pull
ing nt tho counsel's coat-tails. "Don't
rend that!"
"Let mo alone," muttered the lawyer
irritably ; "I'll nttend to you when I've
read the motion."
"Hut I don't want you tn read the mo

"Don't want me to rend? Whynot?
What's the matter ? Pm going to get
you a new trial.'"
"Hut I don't want a new trial !" ex
claimed the, wretch.
"Don't want one? Why not ?" re
turned thc other heatedly, frowning from
under hi? eyeglasses.
"Cause it's too iate," urged the client.
"Wime you wero all out to dinner tho

'''lie Orltrhi of Ammonia and Hie Source
of its Nu;.ply to I'lillllN.
Mr Mr?. /Milora American /.'armer.'
For years we have measured swords
during our pleasant ?rliuLs on thc above
question, you contending that thc pr?
pond?rance of testimony favored the ne
cessity ??f applying, in most cases, mn
tnoniacal matter to llr soil ; whilst I
have contended, without being abb: lo
prove it, that '!.ere was a constant and
suilicicnt formation of ammonia from th?'
chemical action going on in the air be
tween nitrogen and the vapor, forming
nitrate or nitrite of ammonia, which is
the true condition for it to he in to make
love lo tho growing plants. At la-it,
light begins lo spring tort lt with evidence
of the great truths which have so lung
had possession of my thoughts by day,
and I may Hay drouin* at night. For
these fanatical ideas, so calle?I, 1 have
been laughed at, and by some though)
crazy on the subject. Recent ami simple
experiments have conclusively proved
my theory, which I do not claim its my
own, that amuioni t is being forme?I by
every drop of water that passes from thc
earth in thc form of vapor, whether at
low or high temperatures, s:id from any
porous substance exposed lo the air.
A. V. Loi ?ecke, in thu Anhirr? .!.
Pharmacie Xl, No. I, translate, in the
I'harmacM of March, 1S7'.', gives a num
ber ol experiments, which go to show mit
only tho correctness nf Schonbein's ob
servation that ammonium nitrite is form
ed during the evaporation of water from
ihe surface of poroll? ho.lie-, hut that
this compound is formed when it vapor
izes without their being present.
A number of trials showed ibal the re
mainder, after evaporation of a consid
erable portion of chemically pure water,
gave, in nerly every casi-, reactions of
ammonia and nitrous acid, the experi
ment indicating that ammonium nitrite
is formed mare abundantly ut a lower
than at a higher temperature, ami thal
not alone is this salt generated on tho
foliage of plants hy the evaporation of
water, (lo bo absorbed hy the stomates
or breathing pores,) but that a greater
proportion of it originates on the ground,
whence, in all likelihood, it is conveyed
tu the plants through the roots.
Aside, therefore, from tho nitrogen
which Sehnet assumes plants derive from
the air, hut which .Mulder contends can
only transpire through the intervention
of the "oil where ammonia is forme.I,
ami which, combined with Illunie acid,
he believes lo constitute the source of
nitrogen in plants, there would remain,
Loeseeko says, "manure and ammonium
nitri * " arising from the evaporation of
watei. Tho importance of this is esti
mated from his compulation that tuc
amount of nitrogen converted into am
monium nitrite through the evaporation
of a layer of water ? centimetre high, ex
tending over 1 hectare, would hu U.703?1
kilograms. Thai is, as 1 kilo-2,204
pounds, ami 1 hectare-2.470 acres, the
evaporation of a si-alu m of water 1 cen
timetre, or about 1 loth of nu inch, deep,
would give U.081-1 pounds of nitrogen to
the acre.
Let us trace out thc elements forming
available ammonia. First, we find wafer
composed of hydrogen and oxygen in the
proportion of one part of the former to
eight of the latter, (by weight ;) and
then nir, consisting of nitrogen ami oxy
gen in tho proportion of seventy-eight of
tho former and twenty-two ol' tho latter,
(in round numbers.) To form nitric
acid, we aro only to combine ll parts of
nitrogen and 40 of oxygen, (hy weight.)
nnd then we have one of the most corro
sive li(]uids known to science. Again,
combine 3 parts of hydrogen with 14
parts of nitrogen, ami we have ammonia,
ono of the strongest bases and of n suffo
cating nature. Combine thc two and we
have a harmless salt, from which laugh- I
ing gas is made, and this is what is being j
constantly formed for its ultimate object; '
first, to form the blood nf fru't ami grain. I
[gluten,) and finally blood for animal
?fe. All these elements nre found in air
ind water, from which, with that almost
nvisible companion, carbon, comes forth
