Episcopal Church was held in Charleston
recently in St. Luke's Church which
was tolorably tilled.
Thc congregation was composed chief
ly of ladies, to which circumstance per
haps may he attributed tho manner in
which a subject requiring the most con
vincingand sevcresllogic was handled by
the preacher of the day, tho Kev. Dr.
Prentiss. Tho Subject was th-; identifi
cation of the lost ten Tribes ol' Israel
with the Anglo-Saxon race now resi
dent in Great Britain and in this country.
Tho subject was new to the audience,
nono of the clergy or the church in this
city having as yet brought it to the no
tice of their congregation!!.
Sympathizing with thc preacher of thc
dav in bis views and efforts, 1 hope you
will allow mc to redttco his matter to a
more systematic and logical arrange
ments than his limited time and pecul
iar audience seemed to justify bim oven
attempting. And here I would remark,
nt tho outset, that in all investigations
upon this subject it is of thc utmost im
portance to remember that in pro
phetic writings the decendants of Abra
ham appear ns two distinct nationalities.
To confound Judah, or the Jews proper,
with Ephraim, Israel, or ibo Ten Tribes
or sons of Isaac, as they arc sometimes
called in tho Scriptures, ls to confuse the
prophecies and render plain words unin
telligible.
In ninny pinces in the prophetic wri
tings these two peoples arc brought into
shnrp and distinctive contrast. In the
same sentence one people arc cursed and
sonic other people called by Cod "my
servants" nre blessed. This di fieront
nationality can only be tho Ten Tribe'',
because no other tintions on tho face of
the earth were nt tho time oftho prophecy
ever pretending to serve Jehovah, except
these two people" of Judah and Ephraim.
Take for example Isaiah. Goth chapter,
18th b 1.0th verses: "Therefore thus
saith tho Lord Cod : Behold my ser
vants (Ephraim) shall eat, but yo (Ju
dah) shnil bo hungry. Ik-hold mv ser
vants (Ephraim or the Ten Tribes)
shall drink, but ye (Judah) shall bo
thirsty, Behold my servants (Ephraim)
shall * rejoice, but ye (Judah) shall bo
ashamed. Ik-hold my servants (Israel,
Ephraim or the Ten Tribes) shall sing
for joy, but ye (Judah) shall cry for sor
row of heart and shull howl for vexa
tion of spirit. Andyo (Judali)shall leave
your name for a curse unto my chosen
(Ephraim,) for the Lord Cod shnll slay
thee (Judah) nnd call bis servants
(Ephraim) by nnothcr name."
Here, then, wc have curses upon Ju
dah and blessings upon Ephraim joined
together, and beginning at the Hame. If
therefore, wo can ascertain at what time
tho fiirso begins to descend upon Judah
wo discover, necessarily, tho time when
the blessing upon Ephraim commences.
Now the curso begins to descend em
phatically upon Judah, or the Jews pro
per, in A. D. 70, when Titus took Jeru
salem : and nf necessilv. fbi? hjpujn.tr
upon Ephraim also.
It is evident, from Acts 24, (Uh and 7th
verses, that the Apostle Paul well knew
the pince of Ephraim's residence, nnd
their religious chnrncter and condition.
It is evident from 1st Peter J, 1, that
they wero dispersed throughout. PontUs,
Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, (Romani), or
Proconsular Asia,) nud Bythinia, and also
from verse 8th, that they had embraced
Christianity. They lind not consented
unto tho crime of Judah in crusifying
thc Lord of Glory, but had received tho
Gospel with avidity: denouncing tho
Mosaic ritual and religion, finding tho
law in yoke which neither they nor their
fathers could bear, they were in danger
of rushing into tho opposite error of An
tinomiauism, against which St. James
in his Epistle addressed to them, (seo 1st
chnptcr, 1st verse,) cautions and re
proves them.
Josephus, who lived about this timo
testifies that tho Ten Tribes wero then
resident in the East, nnd were a multi
tude which no man could number.
From this time they begin to bo called
by another name. Abandoning all their
Jewish peculiarities, losing eve.? distinc
tive physiognomy, they become lout, while
yet "tho show of his countenance" con
tinues to testify ngninst Judah for his re
jection of tho Messiah.
Now, to find theso Lost tribes, it is
only necessary to ascertain their history,
character nnd condition, as theso are de
cribed in prohecy, and seo whether there
be nny pooplo on the earth who can
meet tho requirements. Tho people
that fills tho prophet's bill is Ephraim!
Hosea (1st chnptcr 10th verse) gives us
tho first mark by which we aro to know
them. They aro to dwell in somo
country in which they aro not to be re
cognized as the people of God, (i. c. as
Isrealites,) but these aro tobo noted for
their religion. There it shnll bo said
tinto them, "Yo are tho sons of the living
God.? 6
This land of their new habitation is
insulnr, nnd in these islnnds the exhausted
people are to find "rest," and to "renew
their strength." (Isaiah, 41-1.) Seo the
whole chapter. In this country they
"shall lift up their voico from tho seu,"
and glorify tho nnmo of the Lord God of
thc sen." (Isaiah. 21- 15.) Thc situa
tion of these islands is northwest of Pal?
estine. Seo Jeremiah, 4-18, and
Isaiah, 43-5. In this land God "spenks
to them by another name." Hero a par
tial blindness (as to their ancestry ) "hap
gens unto them." (Romans, ll-25.)

by a way that they know not of." Hore,
truo to their mtionnl instincts, they
yearn after an acknowledged relation
ship with Jehovah saying: "Doubtless
those are our father, though Abraham) be
ignorant of us, ana though Israel ac
knowledge ?B not." Hero they aro to
increaso wonderfully, "to bo like the
sand of the sea, which cannot be meas
ured." (Hosea, 1-10.) So large is
their increaso thnt, when God gathers
them again into their own land, He can
only ?nlrrt "win nf n elty mut two of A
family" to restore them tb Zion. They
are to become a multitude of nations,
overflowing iuto colonies, becauso their
pince is too strait for thom.
Ono remarkable colony they are to
lose, (Manassail or tho United States,)
but after they have lost this "tho chil
dreu which she shall have shall sny the
pince is too strait for me." Isaiah45
80. In order to aid thom in subduing
waste and desolate places by their colo
nies, their physical constitution is to
adapt itself to nil countries so thnt "the
san shftll not burt them by day neither
the moon by night." In this innulnr
residence they are to bo unconquerable ;
"no wenpon formed against them is to
prosper." They aro to rule the waves;
"the deep io to couch beneath them."
Kxtraorainary blessings aro to attend
their agriculture, their commerce their
mining operations (Dent. 33, 14-16:)
to be blessed*in their basket and their
store; in their uprising and in their down
sitting ; in their going out and in their
coming in." Their coat-df-arms has on
it the Lion and the Unicorn. Dent. 13
"-17. With theso horns Ephraim ls to
push '?ut tbo aborigines of every coun
try which he colonizes.
The Lord is to set Ephraim "hijrli
above all tho nations of the earth." He
is tobo a great banker "lending to many
nations, and borrowing from nono." He
is to be tho champion of civil and reli
gious liberty, "to break e?cry yoko and
let tho oppressed go freo " They "aro to
make much of tho law, 'writing it upon
tho poul?" of tho churches. They aro
to observe thc Sabbath conspicuously.
Tliey are to have an established church,
because their kings will bury their dead
there; iu their exile God is " be to them
a little rsnctuary ;"nnd they will worship
towards Jerusalem (i. c. to thc Fast.)
Find a people with these marks and you
ilnd the Lost Ten Tribe.
