Mr. Fant Is eminently qualified for the position, and hos filled the ollicc acceptably for the last two years. In a word, the Fork has made an excellent choice.Vi. lt. Parker, colored, of this township, bas met with a rather serious misfortune. Ijist week bis gin bouse, and a considerable amount of cotton, and 200 bushels of com were consumed by fire, the burning being caused by a box of matches coming in contact with thc saws while the gin wits running. Ho is confident that the matches were placed in the cotton with malicious intent by one of bis colored sis ters whom ho in sonic trilling way had Offended. Hill surpasses the average freed man in thrill and shrewdness, and ki? ac cumulated considerable property, but in the light of bis recent misfortune, coupled with u growing dislike of bim among both races, he now talks of selling out and "seeking a country." The drop has just fallen, (10 a. m.,) and the neck? of Sharpe and McDonnell, the Mollie Maguire murderers, havo been broken. A telegraphic reprieve hos ar rived, but ono minute too late. MAKRISBURU, January 14. Governor Hartranft, who returned from Washington early this morning, finally agreed to extend the time for the execution of Sharpe and McDonnell to the 28th instant, but tho news of the execution, in answer to his telegraphic reprieve, of course prevented all further efforts to sawn th? raes. N?o hopes were entertained of a final pardon, and the Governor would only grant a reprieve for a few days. The Governor did not reach his office until a quarter before 10. After hearing the attorney's plea for a respite, he decided about half-past 10 o'clock to grant it. A telegram was then written and tiled in the telegram office nt 10.3r>, and sent at 10.3(3. No further reason for the delny in is suing the reprieve is given tl'au the fact that the Governor did not reoch bio of fico until the time above indicated, which shows that very little timo was] lost nf.er hearing tho reasons for the re quest for the reprieve. MAUCU CHUNK, Jan. H-9 p. m. When the Governor'? reprieve arrived at the jail this morning a scene of intense excitement occurred, but although the culprit-; had only been hanging a few minutes there was no movement made toward cutting them down. Tho tele graph messenger reached the jail door before the drop fell, but no heed was taken of his knocking and ringing as the wife of one of the culprits had previous ly bern extremely violent outside. When tue drop fell the knocking and ringing continued, and thc sherill'sent out a man to arrest the parties whom he imagined to bo creating a disturbance, it was then found to be the telegraph messenger with the reprieve. A brother | of McDonnell, who had been kneel ing by the scaffold, arose and excitedly charged the sheriff and bystanders with the murder of his brother. Tho excite ment spread and the sheriff appealed to ono of the priests, who exonerated him from blane. Amidst this excitement, the reproaches of the maddened brother of McDouncll and thc wailings of thc bereaved families outside, the culprits seem to have been forgotten and they remained hanging for thirty minutes af ter the drop fell. Thcro is no reasonable doubt, however, that they were both dead when thc reprieve came. After the bodies were cut down, they were placed in coffins and given to their families, whose cries could bo heard for several blocks, adding greatly te thc prevailing! excitement. J. S.
