evening, for a plume offered to the best
drilled member, outside the commissioned
officers.
Rock Mills Democratic Club will meet at
Providence Church next Saturday after
noon, 24th inst,, to make nominations and
hear from the candidates. A full meeting
is desired.
Mr. W. T. Dean has about completed the
erection of his now house upon the road
leading from Anderson to Lowndesville.
It *b a commodious and handsome dwelling,
and stands near the situation from which
the old family homestead waa rembved.
Mr. A. A. Bowie brought ns two stalks of
cotton taken from a field of cotton planted
on tho 15th of May, which are about four
feet high, with from seventy to eighty well
formed bolls on them. They aro much
finer than a great deal of the best cotton
planted in April.
Wo are informed that Gov. Hampton has
so tar recovered from his threatened attack
of fever aa to be able to take his accustomed
trip to the mountains, and that he will
be present at the meeting in Pendleton on
Friday next. That will bo a very great at
traction for tho meeting.

of Gen. W. W. Humphreys. They will re
main here until Thursday evening, when

The occasion of the temperance and j
litical picnic at the Cantwell Institute on
Wednesday, Uth instant, called out the
attendance of a large number of ladies and
gentlemen from that neighborhood and the
surrounding country. Tho morning was

cause, and excellent and impressive ad
! dresses were delivered in its behalf by

In the afternoon the Democratic Club met

Cols. E. M. Rucker and W. E. Walters, after
which a resolution, postponing the nomina
tion of candidates, was adopted, and tho
meeting adjourned.
The new Town Council were sworn in
on Inst Monday, and have gone to work in
thc proper spirit. On Tuesday they met and
re elected Messrs. Joseph R. Fant and L. C,
Braddy Town Marshals and Mr. T. C. Ligon
Town Clerk. These selections ure good ones,
and as the officer? named hare served with
entire satisfaction to our people for tho peal
year, their re-election will bo generally grat
ifying. The Council passed a resolution
fixing the price of grauting licenses for Bell
ing spirituous liquors by retail at th roc hun
dred dollars, in accordance with the raeolu
tion of the Town Prniocratic Club, whicl
nominated and elected the present Council
Messrs. Q. F. Tolly, E. F. Murrah and J. C

The drill of the upper Battalion of the
Eastern Regiment at WilliamBton on lost
Friday waa a great success. Col. L. E.
Campboll commanded the drill, while Cols.
M. P. Tribble, J. T. C. Jones and Maj. J. N.
Vandiver wera present os reviewing officers.
Col. Campbell displayed an unexpected pro
ficiency as a drill master, and handled his
battalion with skill. Captains Cox, Guyton,
Doc us, Snipes aud their respective compa
nies evinced thorough acquaintance with
their duties, and the entire manccuvcrs of
thc drill were carried out with ?oldier-liko
precision. Captains Horton, Martin and
Neal wore also at their posts in handsome
uniforms, and everything presented a thor
oughly military appearance. After the drLl
an hour was taken for dinner, and the visi
tors present were most bountifully and
hospitably provided for by the citizens of
Williams ton. Dinner over, the crowd re
assembled at the stand, and Col. Campbell
introduced Maj. E. B. Murray, who deliv
ered a military and political address, nt tho
conclusion of which Dr. John Wilson, Pres
ident of tbs Wilhamstor. Democratic Club,
introduced Dr. W. C. Brown and Col. J. L.
Orr, each of whom mado excellent speeches.

Town Council hos been inducted into office
it will be expected to project reforms ot some
kind, ou the principio-that a "new broom
ol?*n." While it is commendable
to seek the convenience of the people in
patting a town clock upon the steeple of
tho Court House, it IB equally incumbent
to prevent tho inconvenience of any portion
of the community. A" nuisance of long
atanding is the murkot bell, which is caused
to ring at a most unreasonable hour in the
morning, and which does not avail the sup
posed purpose of ita ringing. It is an an
noyance to several families, who are entitled
to consideration, and dees not meet the ob
ject desired in giving publicity io thc fr.v?
that beef is in the market, except to the
very few who aro in close and uncomforta
ble proximity to tho market-house.. If the
bel) could be heard over the town, an excuso
might bo framed for a continuance of tho

space, we will say a few words for music.
Wo have just closed a series of singing
schools in Brushy Creek township. Hav
ing taught one week at each of the follow
ing places : Fairview, St, Paul, Bethesda
and Mt. Pisgah. These Churches wore
near enough for the different schools to
visit. Consequently the attendance waa
largo. Great interest was mamrested on tho
part of each school in studying and acti
