Crayton for a copy of the anniversary poem, deliv ered at the twenty-lirst exposition of the \ :.iiicbaga County Agricultural Society of Illinois by Benj. P. Taylor. There is much poetical genius displayed in ifs oom position. The Southern Home School closed its fall session on labt Friday, and thc pupils with their friends celebrated tho evening hy a very pleasant pound party. During thc past session the school was very flourishing, and closed with bright prospects for the coming year. We would call attention to the advertise ment of th'.- Washington Star, the oldest and moat widely circulated of the dailies at the National Capitol, It is more than a quarter of a century old, and contains a full account of all the creat events transpiring in the Capital City. Thinking our readers would like to read as lunch during thc Christmas holidays as ut any other time, we forego the usual cus tom of issuing a half sheet, and come to you with our usual supply of reading, wishing every one a merri) Christmas and happy JYVie Year. Christmas day passed off in a very quiet manlier in our town, willi the exception of a small crowd on the square, who indulged in all the merriment they could get out of the usus! yelling, &c The day was damp and disagreeable, so that most jiersoim kept pretty closely in doors. We are indebtod to Gen. Johnson Ha good, Comptroller General, for a copy of his annual report to the Legislature. It is a pystemntic and exhaustive document, which does credit to Gen. Hngood, and will be of service to the General Assembly in unravel ing thc financial condition of thc State. There will bo an installation of the officers of Bowlan Green Grange at the Grange Hall on to-morrow morning, and also a public installation of the officers of Union Grove Division of Sons of Temperance at thc same time and place. The Indies and gentlemen of the surrounding country are invited to attend. The Comptroller General has announced that he will not postpone *Ue time for the salo of lands for tho collection o? delinquent taxes beyond tho 31st inst. Very great leniency hos already been oxtended, and thc action of General Hagood has been as indul gent as possible. It is either pay up now or be sold out. We are under obligations to Mr. D. J. Sherard, the champion cabbage-raiser of Andereon County, for a fine treat in that linc. Our Dark Comer friend brings up a wagon load every Fall, and disposes of tl sm at ftdr prices. He understands the cultivation of this vegetable, and usually gets ibe premium at our County Fair. Hon. W. C. Brown, Representative from this County, has introduced tho BPI char tering the Savannah Valley Railroad, and alBo presented thc petition of sundry citi zens of this County asking for amendments to the Fence Law. Dr. Brown is a faithful representative, and is at all times energetic and vigilant in the protection of tho intcri sta of his constituents. At a regular nceting of Wynne Council, No.4, R. and S. We had the pleasure of a call on lust Thursday lrom Miss Anna Maria Barnes, editress of The Acanthus, a youth's paiicr, published monthly in Atlanta, Ga., at sev enty-five cents a year. Misa Barnes was originally from this State, and is a lady of very fine literary attainments. Tho Acan tina is a bright, spicy and elevated journal, which desorves success, and we hope it will have many readers in this county. At a meeting of Broadawuy Division of Sons of Temperance on last Saturday night five new members were initiated, and it was decided to have a pound party on next K?it urday afternoon at 2 o'clock. On Wednesday, the 19th inst., a party of Revenue Detectives, traveling in a wagon as peddlers of whiskey, overhauled two of tho men who escaped from Deputy Mar shal Fv A. Daniels in tho Fork about two weeks ago. They were captured about twelve miles below here and securely bound and carried to Greenville with their wagon, team and Whiskey. Stevenson, of Rock Mills Township, had a trunk, contal."lng $35 end valuable papers, stolen from his house while ?he family were at napper hi on adjoining room, on last Thursday night. We wete pleased to meet on Monday laut two old friends irotn Mississippi, Messrs. Christie O. Clinkscalesand Thomas E. Mar tin. These gentlemen removed to Missis sippi about twenty-five years ago, and set tled in Tishemingo County. They are on a visit to friends and relatives, and will re main only a short time. They report good croj? in their section, but money scarce in someosuses commanding as high rates iu twenty-five per cent. They ulso ro|>ort a great many of their neighbors removing to Texas, and the agricultural interests of tho Slate us greatly depressed. It presents in u vivid picture the snares, impositions und ludi crous positions to which a poor orphan boy is exposed, und gives to his readers a splen did illustration of the results of a conscien tious discharge of duty. Every hoy should read it. It is calculated to strengthen and benefit the moral courage of every one who reads it, and is written in the chaste and elegant style for which its author is noted. The Eclectic Magazine.-With the January number thc Eclectic enters?upon a new vol ume and its 34th year. The magazine will bo very strong in 1H7K, and the January number is rich ia valuable articles, includ ing "Science and Man," Tyndall's famous Birmingham lecture; Archibald Forbes' urticle on "Russians, Turks, and Bulgarians at thc Theatre of War," (the best contribu tion yet made to the literature of the Russo Turkishwar); "The Murder of Thomas Becket," by J. A. Froude ; "The Science of Electricity as Applied in Peace ami War;" a "Study of Thoreau," by Tom Hughes; and a sketch of thc Rev. Joseph Cool., with a steel engraved portrait. It is ono of tho most valuable and ubly conducted of the monthly magazines of this age, and may be subscribed for to the publisher, E. R. Pel ton, No. 25 Bond street. New York.
