We invito the attention of Orangers to
tho resolutions of Clio Grange, published
in our Orange Column of last week, on
the subject of excluding bagging and ties 1
on tho purchase of bales of cotton from
the producer. A brief ?rpltinatlon of j
which is tbat the speculator proposes to !
buy the farmer's cotton and take bis bag
ging and ties with the bargain, but with
out allowing any compensation for the
hilt r. Not content with fraudulently
depressing the natural price of cotton by
"bulls,," ''bears." "syndicates," "corners" ;
and "futures," these speculating charac
ters now come boldly to tho front and r?
uni re the farmer >o relinquish at th: gin
house the whole value of bagging end
ties, without which his cotton cannot be
put or? the market at all. Presuming the
farmers to bo so inseparably wedded to
this proc.-ss of baling their cotton Corsa!?
nttd shipment, that they have not the
energy lo r.dopt any other plan of real
izing the productions of their labors,
cud that they will submit to the $havt as
they have on former occasions, with little
more than a suppressed gi owl, with per
haps a few "eua /ords." When it
comes to this kind of reckless "bearing"
and tyranny by ono of two parties mu
t?ja?ly denendant upon eaeh other for '
business and support, it is high timo the
weaker party should iJs?-. up n?-;d shak"
off thc fetters that binds her in sue1? MI
unholy alliance, and provide for her own
preservation. Words of niora) suasion
ore empty sound*, and protest? may be
met with sneers and insolence by thc
usurping party.
The Granger and thc farmer ? un I'm lu
nately not always identical) are equally
and vuully interested iu the defence
against this new modo of filching their ]
hard earnings. And we cannot forbear
the opportunity of inviting all unorgan
ized farmers to come forward md make
common cause with us in this as in nil
other matters pertaining to our mutual
interests. But the Grange, bel?g already
organized, though not so closely united,
wo regret lo. say, as their interests de
mand, is expected to act promptly but
wisely. Then what remedy shall wa
suggest ?
lat. It would bc well to buvc a full and
freo expression of opinion from all
Granger* upon this subject. An over
whelming expression of rebuke may
cause tho aggressor to withhold his vio
lence.
2nd. alight not tho National Grange
effect some arrangement for co-operative
trade with foreign nations, whereby a di
rect trade might bo established between
tho producer and tho cououmor.
8rd. Bring tho cotton mills to the cot
ton rfd**. All farmers should heartily
unite to establish, on every ten miles '
liq un rc, -cotton mills with the Clement at
tachment, and spin their lint from the
eeft?antd?brcad and sell directly to ?ss
weaver. This chaugo in the form of]
offering his fabric for sale would enure to
tho benefit of the farmer in various ways.
It will enable him to put up o larger
value in a smaller balo, and brake up tho
trahie in bales bf lint, lt will lesson the
expenso of bagging and tics, freight, com
missions, patching, raking, sampling and
other subterfuges for taking without
leave, and tho cotton business could be
managed with fewer middlemen oxaiat
ants. It would give employment to a
large number of operatives at home, re
taining the cost of spinning the Mut ia
our own country, and raraoi-?- tho "bono
of contention," the bagging ned tics.
AU thia may be effected without the least
ri.-Jc of depreciating tho producer's profits,
but wit? the most liberal anticipations of
enlarging his productive interest, cher
ishing his independence, and securing
peace and quiet at home.
A Koble Revenge.
The coffin was a plain one-a poor,

"Only let me seo her ono minute,"
cried tbe hapless, homeless orphan,
clutching the side of tba charity box, ana
as he gazed into that rough face, anguish
tears streamed rapidly down the ?heck
on which no childish bloom over lingered.
. Oh, it was pitiful to hear him cry, "Only
once let me see my mother, only once !"
Quick and brutally tho hard-hearted
monster struck tho boy away, so that he
? r reeled with the blow". For a moment tho
boy stood panting with grief and rage;
bis Vine cres distended, his lips sprang
apart, a fire glittering through bis tears,
as he nosed his puny arm, and with a
most unchildlsh accent, screamed:
"When Pm a man I'll kill you for
that?"
There was a coffin and head of earth
between tho-mother and tho poor, for
saken child. ana a monument stronger
than granitebuilt in. the. boy's heart to
the memory of the heartless deed.

THE MYBTEBY OF THH RUDY.-It is
not a little remarkable, and we might
philosophize for some time about it, that
white the diamond is made up of pure
carbon, or < imply blank opaque charcoal,
the ruby, the next in value and beauty,
is nearly made up of alumina or common
clay-98.? per cent.-the coloring matter
iron, making up the rest of it ; tue mere
trace of lime found in it being unappre
eiable. Nothing, wc may venture to nay.
in nature's chemistry is more wonderful
than this fact of ti ie dull, colorie- s and
Ufele** clay becoming metamorphosed by
some bidden and nl.,.,.'>'jt miraculous way
into the transparently olenr, red-colored,
and almost living gem. Imagination
itself fails to find a theory to accnunl for
all this, and no progress in chemistry can
invent a theory to account for all thia,
and no progress lu chemistry can invent
a theory to fit it. It is a somewhat
curious coincidence that the ruby, na well
as tho diamond and other precious stones,
is so often found nwociatcd with gold ;
where they are, there ingold almost nure
to be present. Nature produce? these,
her riches, together; and it afterward is
the province of nrt to keep them together
and to exhibit them as one object.
