COTTON SEED OIL FOE COOKING.-A
writer iu the Southern Plantation gives
the following hints by which house-keep
ers may benefit : "Now what I want to
tell your subscribers is, that reined cot
ton seed oil is just as good as olive oil,
and much better than mott cf tho olive
oil we get here, because it ls so much
fresher. About six months ego I found
out that a number of Hebrew families in
this city were using cotton seed oil to
cook with. I felt interested in the mat
ter, and made some inquiries about it,
and was assured that to shorten bread it
was as good s* lard or other grease, and
to fry fish or chicken or steak It was much
better. I asked how it could be better,
and the answer was that the lard lacked
a great deal of being pure grease-it con
tamed n largo proportion of stearin o and
other foreign matter, and when it was
heated these other ingredients that were
not pure grease would commence to burn
at a much lowor temperature than tho
cotton seed oil-consequently tho meat
immersed in the oil at a temperature
some twenty degrees higher than the lard
could be raised, was at once browned
over, all the juices retained inside, end
nono of the grease permitted to penetrate,
and the result was a much better cocked
and moro palatable piece of meat. I de
termined to try the oil, nod no v state us
tho result of my personal experience for
six months that lt is far nuperior to lard
for every purpose of cooking, at:d that it
is twice as cheap."
A REMARKABLE COINCIDENCE,-In
1863 four gentlemen entered their ?ons
at a boardiug school at Cokesbury, in
So??h Cure'ina. They had been for
years intimate friends and were clergy
men in the Methodist Church. These
hoys remained at this school as room
mates and classmate* for ino yearn, and
entered Wo iib rd College, standing rela
tively first, second, third and fourth in a
large ?da?s. They remained at this in
stitution four year?, and were room matea
all the time, graduating relatively first,
second, third and fourth. They entered
a law omeo nt Spartanburg, and studied
law under the sams chancellor. The war
broke out, and at the cali for troops they
entered Jcnkin's rille regiment from
South Carolina, mid were messmates in
the same company. Being near thc samo
height Muy stood together as comrades
in battle in this regiment. At the second
battle of Mnnnnsns, August, 18G-1, a shell
from the enemy's battery fell in the ranks
of thid company, killed these four boys,
and no other in the company. They are
burb.d on the battle field, and sleep to
gether in the same grave. Their ?amen I
tire Capers, MrSwnin, Smith mid Duncan,
and are the sons of Bishop Caper?, Rev.
Dr. MuSwnin, Kev. Dr. Whitefoord Smith
and Rev. Dr. Duncan, of Virginia, and
the last brother of Rev. Dr. Duncan, of
Macon College. Thc grave ia marked by
a granite cross enclosed within un iron
railing.

si rn plo that many will feel inclined to
laugh, at it, but it has never been known
to foil in a single instance, oren in very
