Mr. Steuben Hanks, of Marl in township,
died on Sunday, October 28. He leaves
many relatives and friends to mourn their
toss.
Rev. S. Hander, President of the William
ston Female College, one of the best insti
tutions of learning in the State, paid us a
visit on last Saturday.
A number of citizens of the County are
now in Columbia attending the State Fair.
From ali we bear from Columbia the Fair
promises to be a decided success.
In a difficulty which took place near Nine
Six on last Friday night, R. M. White Jr.,
was shot by Georgi: lt. Hill, and supposed
to oe mortally wounded. Hill made his
?isca pe.
We have bad heavy frosf* for the last two
?ir three nights, and vegetation is generally
killed. The fall thus far has been very late
and remarkable, such a one as we have not
ihad for years.
Mr. James C. Gantt, of thc Fork Town
ship, sent to our ofllec on Monday a large
Florida Yam grown by him, which weighed
eight pounds. It is the largest potato we
have ever seen.
lt is with pleasure we receive thc informa
tion that Col. Jesso W. Norris, who met I
with quite a serious accident by a fall from
a house last week, has so far ^covered as to
be able to be out.
One of our most enterprising business
firms ere greatly annoyed by rats, nnd wish
to buy about two dozen cats, for which they
are willing to pay a reasonable price. Bring
along your surplus cats.
We arc indebted to Mr. Elias McGee, of
Dark Corner township, for a splendid spec
imen of Yellow Dent Com. It is certainly
the finest corn we have ever looked upon,
thc grains being very large.
Next Sabbath is the regular communion
season of tho Presbyterian Church at this
place, and, os usual, the preparatory services
of Saturday will be held. The pastor, Rev.
D. E. Frierson, will officiate.
Rev. Augustine F. Schmitz, of thc Roman
Catholic Church, will conduct services at
Masonic Hall on Sunday next, 18th inst.
Hereafter services will be conducted at the
same place every third Sunday.
We are requested by Mr. n. B. Fart to
state that the information which we receiv
ed last week that the railroad would not re
ceipt for cotton, was incorrect-that they re-1
feinted for every bale delivered them. ' We j

Mr. T. J. Leak announces in this issue
Hint ho has opened a first-class Tobacco
Store in thc East end of Masonic building,
where lie proposes to keep on band all
grades of smoking and chewing tobacco, at
prices to suit the times. Read his adver
tisement, and give him a call.
We regret io announce the death of Mr.
Waller S. Norris, of this County, on Tues
day last, in the forty-fifth year of bis ago.
Mr. Norris, for the last eight or ten years,
was a great si: .'ercr from a cancerous affec
tion, which battled the akill of his physi
cians. The family in their affliction have
the sympathy of the community.
We learn that in a rencontre, at Donalds
ville. on last Saturday, between Preston
Taylor and Waddy Johnson, that Mr. Tay
lor was killed. Tho parties lived near
linnea Path, in this County. We are un
able to ascertain the particulars of tho diffi
culty, but are informed that the jury of in
quest rendered a verdict of excusable homi
cide.
The death of tho Rev. E. T. Buist. D. D.,
a distinguished divine oi tiie Presbyterian
Church, at Greenville, on last Saturday
night, produces a void In the denomination
which will bo felt in the community in
which he lived and in the State. Dr. Buist
was for a n'-n.ber of years the pastor of the
church at Greenville, and at one time the j
President of the Female College at Laurens
Court House. Dr. Buist occupied a promi
nent position in his denomination, ami bis
friends throughout tho State will regret bis
death.
An extra session of the Court of Common
Pleas, for tho trial of cases not requiring a |
jury, was opened at Anderson Court House
on last Monday, his Honor Judge J. P. i
Recd, of the First Circuit, presiding. The
Judge will dispose of all tho equity business [
on the dockets for trial, except cases in
which he was interested before ms election
to the bench. Judge Reed has displayed j
patience, ability and diligence during the
present term, which calls forth the highest
commendation from the entire bar. H". is
also entitled to tho thanks of our pe .pie
for holding our Court, when he also has the
duties of another Circuit to perform.

To day is tho last one which the tax
payers of Anderson County will have on
which to pay their taxes without the pen
alty being annexed. We ore informed by
Mr. 8. E. Mooro, tho efficient and accommo
dating County Treasurer, that tho amount
of taxes assessed for this County was about
fifty thousand dollars-that at tb?",losing of
his* books on last Tuesday evening, five
thousand four hundred and seventeen re
ceipts had been issued, and the sum of forty
two thousand eight hundred and eight dol
brs and forty-five ?vot? paid In. This I
mnonn't wi?l ile increased by the receipts of
Wednesday and to-day.
CHANGE OF SCHEDULE.
On Wednesday, November 14th, the

leaves Anderson nt ten minutes past eight
