Mr. J. C. Keys lost a fine milch cow a few
days ago from choking to death with a
peach.
Thu minutes of the hist Saluda Baptist
Association are now ready lor delivery at
this oflice, and Churches entitled to receive
them can get them by sending.
The Lowndesville and Ruckersville Base
I lull Clubs played a match gamo near

not heard tho result, though suppose

The Greenville bound train of tho G. ?fc C.
It. R. on last Saturday ran off near Ninety
six, injuring a rox car and causing a deiay
or some two hours, which threw thc train
into Anderscr? after eleven o'clock at night
Capt. John McGrath has token a warrant
fur three cithcens of Anderson, upon the
charge of illegal voting in the late town
election. The charge is without foundation,
and thc defendants will certainly bo ac
quitted.
Mr. Samuel M. Cruyton brought to our
office last week'a very large and delicious
watermelon which weighed thirty-eight
pounds. It was tho largest we have seen
during the present year, and shows that
Mr. Cray ton is an expert in the cultivation
of watermelons.
Thc trade of Anderson bids fair to increase
very much this fall. Lower freight rates
and brighter business prospects have made
our merchants determined to sell as low for
r:\nh ns any other town in South Corolin*.
Try our marketa and see if these promises
are not carried out on a'l cash sales.
We not? i ono doy lost week a wagon
load of cotton from Kari County, Georgia,
which was sold hi Anderson and a load of
supplies and goods carried back in ita place.
The farmers of this and adjoining Counties
will, wo believe, find this as cheap a cash
market this Fall as any la the State.
Miss Linie Williams, of the popular
Ladies Store in Anderson, has gone on to
New York, where she proposes to lay in an
extensive stock of tho most tempting goods,
which will arrive in Anderson very soon,
mid tban tho gentlemen may preparo to
hand over a considerable portion of the con
tents of their pocket books.
Kev. E. R. CarsTv"dl has just closed an
interesting revival meeting at Louai..n
Church. During its continuance eighteen
members were received, ono of whom waa
over sixty-six years old. On Sabbath morn
ing the congrcgatlr j was very large-, num
bering some eight hundred persons. The
exercises were quiet and orderly during the
entire meeting.
Mr. A. J. Watt left Anderson on last
Monday morning for Charleston, for the
purpose of buying a stock of goods, ~hick
he will open out in tho store-house about
eight miles south of this place, on the road
to Lowndesville. Mr. Watt hos been en
gaged in the mercantile business for six or
seven years in Anderson, as clerk for several
of our most enterprising firms, and
oughly Informed as to the wents of the peo
ple. We wish him much success.
The business houses of Anderson are
nearly all represented in New York at this
time. Messrs. B. F. Clayton, S. Bleekley,
Ai B. Towers, J. P. Reed, jr., W. F. Barr,
N. K. Sullivan, P. K. McCttlly and W. 8.
Ligon. representing their respective firms,
aro in the Northern markets purchasing to
meet the C murnda of their customers. Mr.
Arnstein has also been North fur some weeks
past purchasing for tho New York Cash
Store. They will all return in a few days,
and then Anderson wiU be alive with busi
ness and trade.

is under tho control of Prof. 8. Landor, who
Is so well known In South Carolina as an
accomplished tcaoLer and polished gentle
mau that it ia useless for us to attempt to
add to his reputation or tho reputation of
tho College over which he presides. Tho
ladies it hos graduated attest its praises
moro thoroughly and moro practically than
words c*a do.
A young gentleman, representing one ot
tho leading housea in Charleston, was in
Anderson lost week, and undertook to pay
an evening visit to some lady friends in tho
pince. About eleven o'clock ho withdrew,
mid attempted to wind bis way through the
streets of thia extensive town to his botch
He, however, missed his way, stirred up all
the dogs in tho Southern end of town, and
was finally overtaken by a policeman, who
showed him back to tho Waverly House.
The gentleman In question thinks lt is very
easy to get lost In as large a p?aos as Ander
son, especially where one has boen living Sn
n small town like Charleston.
The committee appointed by the Demo
cratic Club of Anderson have, under in>

zens of V?rennos, Hall and Corner town
ships of this County to the announcement
about the Railroad Convention, which 1B to
be held in Anderson on next Tuesday. As
the proposed road runs through these town
ships we would suggest that the citizens of
each of those townships meet at their re
spective places of publie meeting on next
Saturday, et three o'clock in the afternoon,
for the purpose of electing ten del?gate) to
tho Convention. It ls an important matter,
and we hope every township mentioned will
attend to the suggestion we nuke.

The annual meeting of the Methodists at
Sandy Koringa Camp Ground begins to-day
and will continue until after neit Sabbath,
if not longer. Rev. O. A. Darby, the Pre
siding Elder, and other distinguished di
vines of this denomination are expected to
be in attendance for loo purpose of minister
ing to tho spiritual wanta of th? hundreds
who will be camped there and will attend
divine services. A special passenger train
on the Bli: A Ridge Balked has been
ai-.angod for next Sunday, the 16th Inst It
will leave Walhalla at 8:30 a. ra. and arrive
at Sandy Springs about 10 or 10:30. An
other train will leave Anderson at 9:30 a. m.
for tho camp ground, und, returning in the
afternoon, will leave Sandy Springs at 4
o'clock. A very largo attendance is antici
pated.
TES CANTATA.
Tlio citizens of Anderson were afforded
two very pleasant evenings bust we<ji: by the
ladies of tho Episcopal Church, who pre
sented in the Masonic Hall the entertaining
Cantata of the "Flower Queen," or "The
Coronation of thc Rose." The stage, which
was dressed under thc direction of Miss Liz
zie Morris, who also originated the enter
tainment, represented a forest dell, and was
a perfect model of rustic beauty. The
Cantata was rendered by a number of young
ladies in a most highly creditable and in
teresting manner. After the conclusion of
the Cantata, refreshments were in readiness,
and those present followed the charming
mental treat they had enjoyed by treating
their appetites to some of the many delica
cies prepared for the evening. We learn
that the ladies realized over one hundred
dollars, which is to bc appropriated to Grace
Church.
BE VE HUE OFFICIALS.
On last Friday morning a party of Reve
nue officers visited the store of Messrs.
Smith &. Sloan, of Pendleton, and at the
time of their entry both of the proprietors
were absent, and then- clerk had gone into a
back room with a customer for some meal.
When the clerk returned, tho officers asked
to examine tho tobacco-boxes, wbiuu nu
granted, and they were fonnd to bo properly
stamped. Tho proprietors had by this timo
r Humed, and the officers asked to see their
license to Bell tobacco. Upon looking in
their show-case, where it vas kept, they
found the license gc:;c. it could not he
found anywhere. The license was seen in
the show-case the day before by several cus
tomers, and the suspicion that it was re
moved by the detectives is very generally
indulged at Pendleton. The gentlemen
composing the firm of Smith A Sloan stand
as high as any in the State, and no person
would doubt for an instant 'cir statement
of the matter, besides whlcb '. : the statement
of ?orne of th?'r customers who noticed ibo
license there the day before. The circum
stances of the transaction are all against the
detectives, who ought to be Indicted in the
State Courts for larceny. Tho Revenue offi
cers of South Carolina are generally of a
of men who ora a disgrace to the pub
lic service of any State. If President Hayes
wished to ingratiate himself into the people's
favor In South. Carolina, he eau do so more
speedily by removing the infamous gang of
Revenue officials and detectives who have
worried and oppressed our people, than by
any other single oct.
TRUSTEED' C0HVEHTI0H.
A Convention of the Trusteca of free
schools for Anderson County met at Ander
son C. H., September 8th, 18?7, according
to a call from the County School Commis
sioner. The meeting was called to order by
Maj. John B. Moore, who, as chairman of
the lase Trustees' Convention, briefly an
nounced the objects and importance of such
asaociationa, and stated that he only occu
pied the chair at tho request of the School
Commlsaioner; and In conclusion made
come useful suggestions to the Trustees,
thanked the Convention for the honor con"
fermi os the former chairman, and as he
was not entitled to membership In tho Con
vention vacated the chair.
On motion, Dr. J. Wilson waa called to
the chair to complete the organization. Col.
W. 8. Picketts was then unanimously chosen
os permanent chairman, and Geo. M. Mc
David Secretary. Col. Picketts, in his usual
pleasant style, mode some brief remarks,
and announced the Convention ready for
business.
Roll of Trustees called from townships in
tho order of school districts. The following

Watkins; Brushy Creek, W. 8. Picken?, J.

the poll lax of the present year.

As you told us the good wishes of the An
derson folks were wt' h the Pendleton Base
Ball Club on oar visit to Greenville, 1 sup
pose it will please them to know some of the
particulars of our trip.
We loll Pendleton on tho baud wagon
Thursday morning. Lunched and waited
on a rain storm about two and a h&if hours
at Early Station. Soon after crossing tho
bridge over Salud?, we were greeted with
cheers by a squad of mounted gentlemen of
the Resolute Club, bended by their Presi
dent, O. P. Jackson, Esq. Our President
was invited to occupy a scat in his buggy,
and with an escort in front aad rear, we
proceeded to the city. On our way we
were saluted by the waving of handker
chiefs and smiles of fair ladies, some of whom
wo had the pleasure of meeting later on.
On arrival ot the Mansion House, our escort
spurred ahead, formed! a line facing towards
the hotel, and gave three cheers for the Pen
dleton Bose Ball Club. Wc were allotted to
different members of the Resolutes, who at
once entered upon the task of making our
visit an agreeable one.
That night they gave us a most delightful
and icgant entertainment at the mansion
of Mrs. G., who received us most charming
ly, and soon made us forgot there ever was
such a place as Pendleton. The uniforms
of thc Resol (dark blue, trimmed with
white) and of tho Pendletonians, (the his
toric?l red shirt,) combinai with the beauty
of Greenville's fair ladies, formed a picture
not often seen. All wo regretted was that
lhere were none of our ladies io help form
it. The dance was kept up until after mid
night.
On meeting next morning, wo received
on invitation ft om President Gower, of the
Street Railway Company, to uso his cars in
seeing tho city, an invitation at once ac
cepted, Mr. Gower accompanying us part
of the time.
At 3 p. m. we met on the beautiful
grounds where we were to play tho match,
and soon after its commencement we were
further complimented by the arrival of the
Greenville Cornet Band, which discoursed
sweet music until tho rain put an end to it
as well as the game, with a score of six to
fourteen in favor ot the Resolutes at tho end
of the fifth inning. Next to being tho vic
tors, it was our greatest pleasure to be VAL?
qui she? by such a courteous set*^* gentle
men as tho Resolutes.
Saturday moriiing we were again on our
way home. After an interchange of cheers
for each club, and with a parting salute of
"hera a jol?j-, good fellow," to- President
Jackson, we hld good-bye to Greenville.
Our trip wiU long be remembered with
pleasure by the Club, and our Greenville
friends would have felt complimented to
havo heard us, while on our way home,
quarreling among ourselves as to which of
us had been best enterb nj-?. With many
wishes for the prosper'.., of tho Resolutes,
their courteous Presid n ., and the "Moun
tain City" in general, we hope next season
to further cultivate their agreeable ac
quaintance.
