short, concise and comprehensive charge to
the Grand Jury, referring th? proper flatters

the nature of thc oath they had iahen.

which no doubt needed their attention.
On Tuesday morning the ?as? of ibo State
vs, Orr. Latimer and James Peydon wau tried,
Messrs. Wilkes and Harrison defending the
prisoners. Orr Latrn-rr was convicted and
James Poyd?n acquitted.
In the case of the State vs. Wm. ".Vilaon
and Tho*. H. Brock, for lasanltaud batttery,
no hill was found.
0 Atnie bill was found against Jack Nance,
for retailing without license. The prisoner
was defended by Messrs. Murray & Murray,
ahd a verdict of guilty rendered.
In the case of the Stato agdnst Thee. K.
Cole, indicted for bigamy, the Court appoin
ted Messrs. Murray & Murray to defend tbs
prisoner, and after taking ?ie evidence for
tbs State, the Solicitor not prcised the case.
A colored youth, styling himself Col. I>
F. Maxwell, aged about 16 yeare, was next
handed up for grand larceny, and plead
guilty.
In the case of tho State vs. Wm. B. Strick
land, Benjamin Strickland and Abner Strick
land a true bill for burglary and receiving
stolen goods was found. Tho prisoners ore
to be defended by Messrs. McGowan & Moore
and Whitney & Breazealc. The caso was
continued ir. convenience of the buming of
Mr. Strickland's house.
Abe Washington, convicted before R. N.
Wright, Esq., of vagrancy, was sentenced to
imprisonment in jail and to work upon the
streets until the 1st of September.
The casa of Reuben Yom-g, for vagrancy,
was referred to W. H. D. Gaillard. Esq., to
be tried. After attending to such civil busi
ness as could be disposed of, the Court ad
journed to nine o'clock Wednesday morn
ing.
On Wednesday morning tho case of the
State vs. H. Law? :':-.-- Smith, for assault
and battery with intent tc Id'.!, was fried,
the prisoner being defended by Messrs.
B royle*, Featherston and Brown. After
being out some half an hour the jury re
turned with a verdict of guilty.
' This closed the Scions' business, and the
juries were discharged.
Jurlge Reed hos presided with dignified
courtesy and ability, dispatching the busi
ness of the Court with great rapidity. It is
thought the Court will adjourn lu a day or

morning exercises. were devoted to singing

Mayne, 8. J. Dalton, J. W. Ray, UBing the
"Melodies of Praise." After which, Prof.
Prof. J. G. Douthit, L. W, Kay, W. T.-Mc
Lees gave lessons in music, using tho "Chris
tian Kvmony."
After partaking of the unbounded hospi
tality of the citizens of Bethesda communi
ty, tho Convention repaired to thc Church
ind had the closing lessons in music by
Prof. Douthit and W. T. McXees. Tho fol
lowing resolution was adopted :
Resolved, That the proceeding') cf this
Convention be published in the Anderson
intelligencer and Anderson Journal.
