cil, before the first of March next, or they

of the Anderson Baptist Sunday School un

in consequence of bia removal from the
town of Anderson.
The Carolina Military Institute, presided
over by the efficient and accomplished Col.
J. P. Thomas, at Charlotte, N. C., hs? a
large attendance of students this session, and
the'health of the city ia said to bc unusually
good, notwithstanding rumora to the con
trary. Our information ia from headquar
ters, ar d ia therefore reliable.
\Ve received a very fine turnip of the
eeven-top variety, from Mr. John B. Adgtr,
jr., last week. It measured twenty-six
inches in circumference and was of fine
shape. It is the largest turnip we have seen
during the past year which is saying s great
?leal for it as wc have received a largo num
ber' of unusually fine ones during that
pe?od.
Wc are requested to announce that a spe
cial meeting of Slabtown Grange, No. 141,
will be held at Slabtown Academy on the
fl rs.! Saturday in March next, at which time
it i's expected that W. W. Russell will be
present to address the Grange and instal the*
officers elect. Members of thc Grange with
their families, and the public generally, are
invited to be present. Meeting to take
place at 10 o'clock a. m.

Our young friend, John B. Harrison, is on
a visit to Anderson, and will shortly enter
upon his usual business tour through this
section. Mr. Harrison representa the house
of T. J. Magruder A Sons, of Baltimore,
and has for a number of years occupied a
fine) position in business circles. He is one
of Anderson's favorite young men, and bia
success abroad ia highly gratifying to nu

8TODIS DEATH.
Mrs. Rebecca Acker died very suddenly
at the residence of her mother, Mrs. Best??
Rogers, on last Saturday night. She had
been in tunal health, and' retired on the
night of her death without any symptoms
of disease. The next morning ?he was
found dead, and there was no evidence of
the slightest convulsion or straggle in the
hour of ber death. Coroner H. O. Herrick
was notified on the nrzt day, and summoned
a jury of Inquest, which, after receiving tb?
testimony of the fatally, and also of Dr.
M. L. Sharpe, Ute jury's physician, rendered
a verdict that the deceased cams to her death
from heart disease.

THE SE AIE AGE LAW.
The cases of the County Commissioners ss
commissioners of health and drainage for
Anderson County against Messrs. W. D.
Evins. R. 8. Bailey, Jante* T. Keown and
Mrs. Mary Warnock, for assessments claimed
from them for the blasting and work done
upon Rocky River, was tried last week.
Col. J. N. Brown represented the plaintiffs
and W. D. Evins and Orr & Tribble tho
defendants. The facts of the case were
briefly these: The defendants and others,
according to the terms of the drainage tow,
petitioned the Commissioners to have Ma
jors' shoals on Rocky River blasted ont,
and the swami? above drained. An esti
mate of the probable cost was made by
Maj. T. B. Lee, civil engineer, and fixed at |
six hundred 'dollar:!. Thc Commissioners
began the work, which proved rcsch more
expensive than had been anticipated, and
when they had spent about twenty-three
hundred dollars on the work, the defend
ants and others petitioned the Commission
ers to stop the work and leave it for indi
vidual management. The Commissioners
granted thia request, and the defendants re
fused to pay more of the expenses of the
work than their pro rata of the six hundred
dollars, on the ground that their .lands wjsjre ]
not benefittcd. The Commisioners claim
that the reason they wera not benefitted is j
that they had the work stopped before it
was completed. j
The questions presented hy these cases are '
interesting. They are the constitutionality
of thc drainage law. and as to who is to lose
the work already done in the effort to drain
Rocky Hiver. Are the parties who had the
work begun, or the Commissioners person
ally, or is the County to pay for the labor
and expense already had in blasting and
ditching, or are the men who were employed
to do the work to lose their labor? The
case was submitted to the jory, and a verdict
rendered for the plaintiffs to thc amount of
J03 cents on the dollar of their claims. The
defendants moved for ? new trial on the
ground thst no benefit was proven to
have accrued to the defendants from the
effort to drain, and the Judge granted
the motion. Hence, the questions in
the case are still unsettled, and at some
subsequent term of the Court the whole
mutter will have in be gone over vith
again. It is impossible to predict with any
reasonable certainty thc result of the next
tris!, which will attract great interest.
