These gentlemen are re liable, and their fertiger has been tried with great success. The principals of the Cantwell Institute ha.e secured the services of Miss Emma C. McKay, of Greenville, as a music teacher. She ls a graduate of the Greenville Female College, and a gradnate in music under Prof. DcOarop. of that city. Wo learn that the school ls opening well and promises good results. Speights is not altogether happy over the situation of national affairs, and intends going to Washington in a few days, whon he will sit on Bradley's case. Exchanges will please pass over this item in making their selections, for it is a profound secret between the aforesaid and ourselves as to his intentions. Wc are requested to state that Mr. J. N. Carwilc, School Commissioner for this Coun ty, has appointed Messrs. J. 8. Murray and 0. H. P. Fant a? bis examining board, and bas opened his office in the room formerly occupied os the parlor of the Centennial Hotel, where the business of his office will be henceforth conducted at this place. Col. A. M. Speights, the chief engineer t?f the C cenviiie Daily Newt, was in our town on last Monday and Tueadey. He is a very handsome youth, and is exceedingly well preserved for a man of his years. We were right glad to sec bim, and PO were bis legion of friends in Anderson. He cautioned us against mentioning his name in tho papers, and we are not apt to neglect the request. The columns of the Greenville Daily Neut may never tell the adventures of its honored chief in Anderson, and we merely suggest that he was principally devoted to rural scenes. He rambled about thc neighboring farms, and tonk an especial fancy to the im proved methods cf finning ir. Anderson. Speights Trill retire from the newspaper business whenever he niaken money enough to bay a farm. The Carolina Collegiate institute now has one hundred pupils in attendance, and the friends of the institution may be con gratulated upon this auspicious showing. Prof. Ligon and his co-laborers are sustain ing themselves finely, and the public ap preciate their noble work in the cause of education. There is room for more stu dents, however, and we will be glad to chronicle a steady increase. Citizens living in the neighborhood of the Episcopal Church have bs?? greatly annoyed lately by persona pulling oft* and carrying away the palings from the fencing around their premises. These depredations are committed in thc dead hours of aight, and the police, who are charged with the duty of protecting the property of our citlsona from such depredations, should see to it that the scoundrels perpetrating these acts be ferreted out and brought to justice. The grand jury of Richland County has found a true bill igainst Senator Cochran, of Anderson, for the murder of Thoa. Dent. The case waa ?et for trial before Judge Car penter yesterday. The indictment against 0- P. Kirkland as an accessory to the mur der rcaultM In no bill. We understand that an effort has been made to change the venue in the case against Mr. Cochran, but the reported proceedings indicate that it ?.ll not bc granted. The Abbeville papers record the death of Mr. Arthur Erwin, an old and respectable citizen, who died ?n the 3rd inst, at the residence of his son, Mr, Malcolm Erwin, on 1 ?aluda River. Mr. Erwin waa a native of County Antrim, Ireland, and emigrated to thu country In 1M8, since which time be has lived in Abbeville County, respected for his industry and strict integrity, and faith ful In all the relations of lifo. The recent occurrence in Walhalla relative to the larceny of Ute Auditor's books by Alex. These gentle men were takon to Columbia on Tuesday morning. Wc understand that Bryce al leges that th? mail pouch contained three hundred dollars' worth of poa ta?* ?Urana and a registered letter. A bench warrant has been Issued for Bryce, and he will be brought back for trial at the ensuing term of tho Walhalla Court. The County Commissioners met on Mon day last, aud decided not to imposa a tax for county purposes, which bsd been recom mended by the grand jury. W? lourn that the amount of money already on hand is sufficient for the rapport of th? poor houso for several months to come, and there is no pressing necessity for levying a contribution tax similar to the State. The expenses of til? Court and other demands against the County will have to await payment until the machinery of the 8ttte go vern meit ls in complete order, and this will inconvenience a portion of our citizens. But the certainty of payment in a short time will consol? the c.editors of the County, who are willing to trust the judgment of tb? County Commis sioners as to the expediency of the proiiosed levy. _ ADMITTED TO THE BAB. Hon. E. W. Simpson, one of tb? Repre sentatives from Anderson County in ?Le Legislature, was examined for admission to the practice of law on Monday last, and was enrolled as an attorney. His examina tion was highly creditable, wc understand. We congratulate our friend upon bis en trance into the legal fraternity. TBS STATE eSASQB. The State Grange held its annual meeting in Columbia last week. Only about one third of the subordinate Granges tn the State w?re represented. Thc sessions were protracted, lasting every night until a late hour, as we are informed. The business transacted related mainly to the considera tion of plans for infuslnj new life into the order in this State, and committees were ap pointed to mcmorialixe the Legislature upon the fence law, the establishment of an agri cultural bureau, and amending thc laws to prohibit the traffic in stolen cotton and other tami products. As announced in our last laius: the per manent location of Newberry Collegs ls to be determined by a committee of th? Luthe ran 8ynod, and bids are invited from differ ent towns for that purpose. Some interest has been manifested anion?? the citizens of | Anderson in regard to the proposed I- -ntiou, and we desire to bring the matter dir.- ?by to their attention. The Newberry College was removed some years ago to Walhalla, where buildings were erected, and where a full corps of professors are now actually engaged in prosecuting the work of educa lieg young men for the business of Ufe. The institu tion has au established reputation for use fulness and decided merit, and ia supported by the united and enthusiastic efforts of an entire denomination. A valuable library belongs to the College, and an agent is now in the field to secure an endowment of Fifty Thousand Dollars, the interest of which ID to be applied exclusively for the payment of professors' salaries. This agent baa succeed ed beyond expectations, we are informed, and the endowment is confidently expected to be realized. The average attendance of bearding students will number not leas than fifty, which, added to thc local patronage, would Insure a successful institution. The advantages of Anderson in a healthy climate and cheap living would seem commensurate with any other town in the up-country, and as i mean? of extending ita growth we do mit know any surer method than establish ing its reputation as an educational centre. By the co-operation and earnest endeavors of its citizens this desideratum may be easi ly gained. We think the proposition in re gard to the Newberry College quite worthy of consideration, and would ask that our I fellow-citisena who are moat largely inter ested in the growth and prosperity of the town make an investigation of ita merita at an early day. Favorable weather continues and farm work goes bravely on.Recognising the importance of meutal culture and the value of proficiency in the arc of oratory, the young men speak of instituting a literary club at Towuville.Townville^ Baptist Church ia iu great need of repairs, but a new building would be more preferable. The membership of this Church Is doubtless unsurpassed lu point of numbers by any ! other church within the bounds of the Saluda Baptist Association.Townville and the "diggins" round about are teeming with young men whom only a few mora j cycles of Father Time will brand with the unpleasant stigma of "old bachelor." Dean, nsquuv ing him to show causo why he should not turn over bi* office to the County Commis sioners as asked by the Grand Jury. Mr. J. B. Breazeale filed bb return, stating that hie only retaiued the office until a successor is appointed, and the rule was discharged. A similar tele ia pending against the County Auditor, and Gen. J. W. Harrison repre sented the Auditor. On Tuesday the case of M. Lesser vs. J. G. Hall and Mrs. M. J. Hall, bis wife, waa tried. The plaintiff waa represented by Messrs. Harrison it Whitefield and the de fense by Messrs. Murray & Murray. One of the questions involved was the right of a married woman to go security for her hus band upon a note. After argument the Plaintiff submitted to a non suit, and though the question, was not formally decided tb* position of the defense wa* virtually sus tained. Persons lending mousy or takiug notss would do well to make a note of this case. The case of Mrs. Mary C. Breazeale, Administratrix vs. Mrs. Elizabeth Cox, Ad miutstratr , in which Mr. J. E. Breazeale represented the Plaintiff and Messrs. Mc Gowan and Moore the Defendant. The de fense set up waa that the note was .. promis sory note, and changed to ?- sealed note to avoid the statute of limitations. The ver dict was for the defense. Joseph D. Taylor va. Mrs. M. J. Orr aud Jame* L. Orr Admin istratrix and Administrator of estate of Hon. James L. Orr, wa* tried, and verdict for the Plaintiff. A number of other cases have been tried, but these embraced the points of greatest public interests. The Court is still in session. ?AP OP AHDSRIOB COUSIT. Hall, Esq.; who was employed by the County Commis* sioners in 1688 to run the township lines. We have been desirous for a long tim* to see such a work completed, and have no doubt that a goodly edition will find ready sale. The proposed map will show the six teen townships in different colors, and in sise will be abr-nt 27 by 34 inches. Cooke, Presid ing Judge of the Eighth Judicial Circuit : The Grand Jury beg leave respectfully.to make the following presentment of mattet? which they deem of Importance to the pub lic interests of the County pf Anderson : They have visited thc offices of the Clerk of the Court, Sheriff and Probate Judge, and und them well kept and the duties of these offices satisfactorily performed.
