Ebenezer Jolleff, living at Branchville, in

the lax-payers of Belton and vicinity, havo
notified the Special Agent that they will
visit Anderson to-morrow to mako payment
of their quota.
Mcgrath & Byram offer inducements to
those indebted to them-one cent per pound
for cotton above the market price. Their
stock of groceries, dry gooda, etc., is full,
and they propose to sell very cheipfor cash.

B. F. Crayton, E?q., has gone to Charles
ton this week on private business. The
annual races of the South Carolina Jockey
dub are advertised for thc present week,
and we venture the opinion that Anderson
will be represented.
Coroner Herrick was called upon last
Sunday to hold an Inquest over the body
ofa white infant in the neighborhood of
Concord Church, but the examining physi
dins were not satisfied that the body under
view wus human, and the County was saved
the costs of an inquest.
ilr. E. D. rru'ett, of Martin Township,
was the first tax-payer in Anderson County
to pay the ten per cent, under Gov. Hamp
ton's call. He took the precaution to leave
bis money with the Special Agent a few
divs before the books were opened, and
thereby secured the first receipt.
Governor Hampton baa commissioned the
newly elected Sheriff of Anderson County, i
Junes H. McConnell, Esq., who entered
ujwn the duties of his office on Monday
list. Mr. McConnell ii. familiar with thu re
quirements of his position, as he has served
for many years as the deputy of Sheriff
McGukln.
The usual paragraph is going the rounds
dillis newspapers, in which every one is
lilied to give prompt attention to their
?mall bills, as by putting the money in mo
tion it will go from one to another, and
taut in paying off many scores. This is
sound and sensible advice, and an ud m i ra

THE COLLECTION OF TAXES
The books ol the Spa hil Agent appointed
by Governor Hampton to receive Hie con
tribution of ten jwr cent, were opened os
inst Saturday, without any public notice, j

Lari were collected. The regular announce- j
ment ?9 mude in our advertising coluinns
to-day, und tux-payers aro invited to show
their faith by their works. A prompt re
sponse is expected from Anderdon County,
which has been foremost in the movement
from the beginuing to secure the redemption
of the State from omi pt rulers, and tho
opportunity is now given to manifest tho
earnestness of the professions made during
and since the campaign. It is u voluntary
contribution, und yet it is true that there ia
just obligation rusting upon every citizen to
maintain thc lawful government. No one
need to expect that thc exaction mode by
Chamberlain und the Mackey House will bo
enforced. Thu injunction obtained against
the County Auditor has nipped in thc bud
any expectations of that character, und thc
illegality of its assessment and collection
will be maintained by thc Courts. The
question only remains for thc tax-payers to
determine whet lier ov not they will respond
to thc call made by Gov. Hampton fora
contribution of ten per cent, upon the
amount of last year's taxes for the support
of the legitimate government of the State.
It will require an actual demonstration of
thc fact to make us believe that tho tax
payer? of Anderson County will refuse their
quota. Each man must remember that
"taxes aro a test of sovereignty, and their
payment indicates loyalty," and the small
est amount is equivalent in importance in
this view as the largest.

The annual meeting of the Young Men's
Christian Association was held, in tim Bap
tist Church on Wednesday evening, 10th
inst., in accordance with appoint men t of tho
committee of arrangement? from that body.
Kev. D. E. Fricrson delivered the annual
address before the Association, and bb; effort
was highly instructive and entertaining.
Thc .speaker dwelt upon the importance of
the great work, and thc zeal and energy
displayed by the young men all over thc
country in Ita prosecution und furtherance.
His address was very encouraging to thc
members of Association, and was highly
appreciated by them, as well as by the
ladies and gentlemen who were present.
After the conclusion of Mr. Frierson's ad
dress, a abort business meeting was held to
hear the report I rom thc President and elect
ollicers to herve the ensuing year. The
President's report was read before thc Asso
ciation, which showed that thc several com
mittees bad been very active in the prosecu
tion of their respective duties. The follow
ing oiliccra were then elected : President,
G. F. Tolly; 1st Vice President, John W.
Todd; 2nd Vice President, A. P. Hubbard;
Secretary and Treasurer, L. P. Smith. The
meeting then adjourned.
SHOOTING AFFRAY.
Several officials of the revenue service
went one night last week to Liberty Station,
in Pickens County, for the purpose of cap
turing whiskey wagons, and while there at
tempted to arrest a man named Redmond,
who is charged with killing a mun in North
Caiolina. While in pursuit of Redmond
through tho. woods, the United 8tates Mar
shals after him were fired upon, and two of
them were wounded. E. H. Barton
shot in tito thigh, but not dangerously, and.
Hendricks was shot through the chest, per
haps fatally. Gary escaped unhurt, but was
left in charge of thc whiskey wagons, and
subsequently he and another were fired
upon and wounded by thu whiskey peddlers,
who were incensed by the conduct of the
officers.
RAILROAD ACCIDENT.
An accident occurred to tho passenger
tniin on the Anderjon Branch last Saturday
afternoon ac thc station near Broadaway
?.resile. The track gave way suddenly, and
three freight cars were thrown off, together
with thc baggage-car and tender. The en
gine and the passenger cars remained on the
track, and no person WOB injured by the
wreck. The rotten condition of the earth
produced by thc late snows and rains caused
the accident beyond a doubt. Thc train was
not restored to the track until Sunday after
noon, when it reached Anderson about dark,
bringing the mails due on Saturday.
THE COLUMBIA REGISTER.
Mr. John C. Squier, the general traveling
agent of the Columbia Register, will be in
Anderson to-day or hr-morrow and will call
upon our citizens in the interest of thc pa
per which he represents. He is a pleasant
gentleman, and desires to secure tn in
creased circulation in this community for
the largest democratic daily published at
the State Capital. Thc Register is conducted
with enterprise and nbility by men who are
straight-out Democrats.
