taken. We are not akin to Vanderbilt or
any other millionaire that we know of, sud
the only possible chance to pay our debts (a

omar to settle np their amara to this office.
When this is doue, we will cheerfully tura
over tbs money to our crediton1, or if they
prefer we will turn over the newspaper
accounts, which sro warranted to b? promo
tive of health and longevity, from the exer
cise it requires to collect them.

The Democratic party of Anderson Coun
ty met ia Convention pursuant to adjourn
ment st ll o'clock on hut Monday morniug.
AU the clubs in the County were represent
ed, except Brushy Creek and Fork No. 2, by
full delegations, which gare the Convention
a membership of about ninety-five delegates.
Thc Chairman, Col. Hoyt, after the enroll
ment of delegates, announced the Conven
tion ready for business and called Col. F. E.
Harrison to the chair, and offered the ad
dress which appears elsewhere. Senator
Cochran asked for the r?solu'.'?.< na to be re
read, and the Convention voted io grant the
request, after which Mr. ES. B. Murray
moved that he be allowed to give tua views
to the Convention upon the address, which
was adopted. Senator Cochran then an
nounced himself as a Republican who
favored supporting the Hampton govern
ment, because he did not believe Chamber
lain had been elected. Upon motion of Mr.
O. W. McGee, the address and resolutions
were unanimously adopted. Mr. G. F.
Tolly then presented a resolution endorsing
Mr. J. Baylis Lewis for County Auditor,
which, upon motion of Col. F. E. Harrison,
was tabled. Mr. Tolly then, as chairman of |
thc delegation from Anderson Court Hoase,
presented, ander instructions of the town
club, a resolution endorsing Capt. John R.
Willisms for Jury Commissioner, which
was auto tabled. Mr. E. B. Murray theo
moved to reconsider the vote tabling the
resolution, and ?tated that Samuel Johnson
had been recommended for the position,
and that he did not think ita proper nomi
nation. Mr. James L. Orr asked permission
to be heard, which, upon motion, was grant
ed. He spoke at length sustaining the re
commendation of Johnson, and stated that
the delegation was unanimous in recom
mending him. Copt. R. W. Simpson was,
upon motion, also heard in defense of the
recommendation. Mr. E. 3. Murray re
plied, steting that be did not mean to reflect
upon the delegation, and did not construe
the resolutions as any reflection. It was
simply a difference of opinion. The motion
to reconsider was adopted, and, after consul
tation, the resolutions wera indefinitely
poatpesjsi. Hr. Murray thcu moved tbst
the delegation be requested tn withdiaw the
recommendation of Johnson, and make a
recommendation to Governor Hampton of
some suitable and competent person for
thc position. After come discussion this
motion was adopted by a vote cf forty to
thirty-nine. R. N. Wright, Esq., moved to
reconsider this vete, and Mr. E. B. Murray
moved to lay the motion on the table, which
was adopted.
Col. F. E. Harrison moved to adopt the
recommendation of the State Executive
Committee upon the labor question, which
would have been to make no distinctions in
the employment of bands. Mr. E. B. Mur
ray moved to substitute the following reso
lutions, which were adopted :
Rooked, That this Convention adopt the j
action of the County Executive Committee
on the labor question with the addition that
Republicans itho support the Hampton
government, and refuse to pay taxes to the
Chamberlain government, and who join the
Clubs, be treated as Democrats.
Remited, That the action of the County
Executive Committee be printed with the
proceedings of this body.
The following are the recommendations of
the County Executive Committee, aa adop
ted in December :
1st. Hie Executive Committee suggest
that every Danoo at in tht County be ear
nestly requested not to give employment or
patronage in any menner to auch men as
were prominent Republican party or local
leaders in the recent election, and that all
assistance and encouragement bo withheld
from them.
2dd. That the treatment of the rank and
IT.? of tue Republican party be left unacted
anon by our people for the present, and that
after the first day of January next, if Gen.
Hampton is inaugurated Governor, our peo
ple should ba magnanimous to the rank r nd
tile of the Republicana of this County, and
that they be employed upon such differences
between them and Democrats as may be
fixed upon by the different Clubs to secure a
just, deservid and promised advantage to
those who voted the Democratic ticket.
3rd. That with a view to carrying out the
foregoing recommendations, we suggest that
a complete list of all the voters in the bite
election be published forthwith in pamphlet
or circular form. That the name of every
Democrat be printed in one list by precincts,
with the letter, (W.) and (Cito denote
white or colored, and that the nameof every
Republican be nrlnterl in anutlwr Hat hy
precincts, with "the letter (W.) or (C.,) to
denote white or colored, and that thc namco
of all Republican leaders bs distinguished
from the rank and file of the party, by hav
ing an asterisk opposite to them, and that
each Club designate who are such leader? in
Its bounds.
4th. We rccominer.il that thc Clubs of our
County proceed, immediately, to enroll the
names of colored men who are willing to
become members of our organlcation, and
that all who join before the first day of Jan
uary next, be treated'as Democrats in the
contract* to be made for the coming year.
5th. That we recommend to our people to
fulfill, fully and liberally, our promise* to
colored nien who joined our Clubs before the
election, by giving them the best pisces and
the highest wages ; especially, the prominent
leaden on the Democratic side.
The Convention then, upon motion,ad
journed.
The Convention was a grand success, snd
.hows that the people of Anderson County
are unanimous in their determination to
.apport none other than the Hsmpton gov
c.mnent. It ls not spprebended that there
will be many Republicana, even in thia
County, who will pay taxes to Chamberlain.

sad Anderson bids fair long to deserve the
well won sobriquet of "The Banner County
.f8outh Carolina."

on the first Wednesday in February, at seven
o'clock in the evening. Every Grange in
the State ought to be represented. The
railroad fore will likely be reduced, and the j
hotel prices are moro reasonable thnn since
the war.
Mr. James W. Poo re. at Belton? and Mr.'
M. T. Elgin, st Hones Path, are renewing'
the clubs at their respective places, and per
sons indebted for subscription will .find a
statement of their accounts in the hands of
these gentlemen, and will make payment
to them without further delay, ss longer in
dulgence cannu; be given.
Mr. W. O. Hampton, thc young roan who
wss robbed in this County last year,
cidcntally killed in Greenville County on
the 2nd inst. He was preparing for a hunt,
and after. loading one barrel bf Hil gun; His
supposed that he dropped bis shot pouch,
which struck upon the hammer of tbe
loaded barrel and knocked it up sufficiently
for the fall on the cap to explode it. The
shot pouch was found between his feet.
The load entered his temple, killing him
instantly.
We ask tho attention of our readers to thc

stitute. Owing to the very inclement weath
er, the opening of tbe Institute has been
postponed to next Monday. Wo learn, that

The annual election of officers took place
on Tuesday lost, and resulted in tho re-elec
tion of the old officers, os follows :

Brock.
A semi-annual dividend of fire per cent,
was declared on the first of January, free
from taxation. The premium on United
States bonds held by the Bank has been ex
tinguished, and two per cent, carried to the
surplus fund. The management of this in
stitution hos always been excellent, and its
praent showing will compare favorably
with any of the South Carolina Banks. Mr.
J. A. Brock, Cashier, and Mr. B. Frank.
Mauldin, Assistant Cashier and Teller, re
tain their places in the Bank, to the satisfac
tion of the public, as these gentlemen arc
highly appreciated for their courtesy and
business capacity.
