THE "INTELLIOPCER. ~~ L.OCA?- MATTERS. THE LO EB VILLE MURDER. A negro named Osborne Rhodes, living uix-n the plantation of Dr. J. C. 8i>car near Lowndesville, In Abbeville County, on Sat urday thc 2nd inaf., openly boasted in that village that he could martial men enough at any time to kill all the whites in that country. His conduct was violent and biri maimer threatening. S|>ear heard of it bc | mcecded to Lowndesville and procured a reace wurrant for Rhodes, issued by Trial Justice Beck ham, under which be was ai rested, and in default of giving security to keep the peace was committed to the Lowndesville cala boose by the Trial Justice to keep him in custody until the next morning, at which time he was to be committed to the Abbe ville jud some twenty-four miles distant. Rhodes' boasts were not empty, as will be seen from what followed. At ? or 9 o'clock on that night, the 4th inst., un armed bund of forty or fifty negroes broke open the calaboose, and Hberuted Rhodes without any formidable opposition, as no such 'hing hud been expected, und Mic officers of the law were unprepared to retain thrir charge against such an attacking party. The negro mob then retired ubout a quarter ot u milt in the direction of the Presbyterian church und occupied an open piece of woods. The citizens of Lowndesville thought they hud dispersed, and gave themselves no further uneasiness about thc matter. They were, however, mistaken. At ll o'clock p. m. I4'cssrs.'Chiytpn1 Allen and Theodore O. JiaKcr were returning upon horsetrack to Lowndesville from a prayer meeting held at thc residence of a neighboring citizen, and upon reaching the open woods were fired into by the negro mob. Two vol lies were fired, and Allen, who rode upon the side next to the woods, fell instantly dead, hav ing been literally riddled by the balls from hit assassins. Those held for trial wer? all implicated by their own confessions, oi by the testimony of members of the mob, ii having taken a part in thc shooting, whicl was done with arms issued to them by tb? .State Government. H. McConnell, of this County to Trial Justice Beckham on that night On Friday morning thirteen prisoners all retained by the Trial Justice excep the three from Anderson who had not ar rived at that time, were started to AbbeviU jail, under commitments fiom the Tria Justieo in the custody of citizens fron i/owndesville, some of whom were relative of the murdered man. They had not prc cecded far, when they were informed that ; large party of negroes were way laying th road to Abbeville to rescue ihe prisoner: Thereupon they tinned and brought then to Anderson, whero they, were received b Sheriff Wm. McGukin at about 8 o'clock j m. One prisoner named Samuel Burto was dead, uud bis two brothers, John an (Silbert, were at the point of death. Doctoi Sharpe. Syinmcs and McFall were intuit diutcly summoned, and perceiving that the were affected by Laudanum, gave them ar tidotes which restored them in a few bonn Trial Justice Whitfield, acting Corone: summoned a jury, composed of both color und of both political parties, and held a inquest over the dead niau. Several men hers of the guard were sworn, and testilic that Samuel Burton and his brothers a] pcircd sick soon after leaving Lownde: ville, but would not tell what was the mu ter wjth themselves. A wagon was pn cured, and they were put into it. Sum soo was too sick to travel, and was left at house with a part of the guard, where 1 very soon died, and bis body was brougl to Anderson. The Burton prisoners test tied that they got some laudanum i Lowndesville,, and at a bridge on the roa which was given them by a tall white ma they did not '.now; thal they drank it kill themselves ; that they knew thc brother Shin died from laudanum which 1 got from John, and that thc guard had ,?r teeted them from danger. The citizens h lieve the laudanum was carried to thc prl oners by their wives, who were allowed visit them in the "Lowndesville Calnboo before they were .tarted off for jail. SUICIDE A colored womb!) by thc urine of Daily Thompson hung herself on last Friday morning. She -jas nt times butane, und had threatened to take her own life several times. Trial Justice G. W. Hammond, act ing Coroner, held an inquest, at which the testimony established these facts, ami tho jury found a verdict accordingly. She lived about seven miles below Anderson. A BOLD BOBBERY. Some thieve? en last Monday night pulled off the weatherboarding and ceiling of Mr. Gaines1 store, in Townville, until they wyre able to reach in und open u window, through which they entered, und helped themselves to ubout fifty dollars' worth of gooda. They elso got some money from thc book-keeper's desk, andan imitation live dollar bill from the show ease. They took thu patent cash drawer out and carried lt to Mr. Gantt'* gin house, where they broke it open, hoping to lind money. They tried to break open the iron safe, but failed. No clue as yet has been obtaining as to who were the robber.', but a sharp look-out will be kept for them. Our citizens should look out for any attempt to pass an imitation five dollar bill, and promptly Inform Mr. Gaines. Wc hope these rascals will Ix? caught and receive tho full penalty of their crime ut tho hands of ! the law. BRIEF MENTION. The streets of Anderson have been crow ded with wagons for thc past day or two. loaded with cotton. Middling, 8i to 11$. We are indebted to Hon. J. 8. Murray for the conduct of the editorial department of thc Intelligencer during our absence last week. Senator Cochran has been voting with the Democrats of the Senate since tho com mencement of the session. His course is creditable to him. 'The conduct of Messrs. McGukin, tho Sheriff, und F. A. Daniels, the Juiior, on Inst Friday night in preparing to retain charge of the Lowndesville prisoners de serves the commendation of our citizens. We are indebted to our friend, thc Cor oner, for a handsome Bramah cock, which he has presented us to crow around thc premises over Tilden und Hampton's elec tion. Mr. Herrick bas been very successful in the poultry business, und has a very line variety of fowls. The President has pardoned Will. S. Gentry, who was convicted of retailing spirituous liquors without license, in this County, und sent by thc United States Court to thc Albany Penitentiary fur the term of two years. Thc pardon was granted upon the application of E. B. Murray, his attor ney, on account of thc age of thc prisoner und thc circumstances of his conviction. Wc would cull attention to thc advertise ment of Messrs. Arnstein & Rose, and the otfer of premiums which they make. The public know from the liberality with which they advertise that they ure live, progressive men, and wish to impress upon our readers that the men who advertise, most generally have most to advertise. These gentlemen bave a fine stock of goods, and are lu con stant communication with New York to supply thc varying demands of trade. Their politeness and energy merit for them the patronage they receive. Mr. G. W. Faut is now receiving a large lot of elegant books, writing desks, Albums suitable for Christmas presents for gen tlemen, Indies ov children, at thc rost Office. He nlso hus a lot of excellent pocket memo randum books, conveniently nrranged, and containing much practical information. Wc have received u copy, und can say from examination that every business man ought to have one. While our people arc prepar ing to make presents for thc holidays, they would do well to examine Mr. Pants' stock ut the Post Office. If he has not got what yoti watd, he can order promptly for you. BLOADAWAY CLUB. We ure requested tc announce that the Broadawuy Democratic Club meets on next Suttirday at li o'clock p. m., and every voter of the township is requested to attend. We are also requested to publish the following preamble and resolution, which were udop ted by this Club nt its meeting on last Satur day : WnaaBAS, at a primary election in this County the merits and demerits of those persons who were desired by thc Democratic party were passed upon by the clulw at pri mary elections-the system adopted in this County for nominating candidates for office; and whereas till persons thus nominated be came tho candidate for thc party and re ceived the entire vote; And whereas, Wm. McGukin wus run for thc office of County Treasurer with others, and received a majority vote of the Democ racy of about six hundred. Therefore be it Resolved, That it is thc unaulmous request^ of this Club, under said arrangement in our County afluir? that Wm. McGukin, a disa bled soldier, shall receive thc appointment of Treasurer for thc County of Anderson. Resolved, That any other appointment made in this County would defeat thc wis dom and desire of the Democracy thereof. They therefore rcsinxtfully ask that the Gov ernor elect, Wade Hampton, appoint Wm. McGukin to said office, and this Club vouches for his ability, fidelity and capacity. A BEQUEST. Need I remind yon there are moment in thc history of every people where the highest courage and most ex alted devotion are best exemplified by noble self-control ? By my unwearied exertions I have endeavored to preserva the peace of th? His conscience may make him tremble, but neither I nor the men whh whom I act countenance the hand of the assassin. (Signed) WAUK HAMPTON. DEATH OF AX OLD CITIZEN.-John A. Crawford, Esq., nu old citizen of Co lumbia, hut n native of thc county of Antrim, Ireland, departed this li!? at noon, on Sunday, in thc 82d year of his age, after an illness of a few days, of pneumonia. He had been a resident of J Columbia for fully sixty years, and had filled many important trusts-member of the Legislatur?.', President of the Brauch Bank ol the State, ?Ste. Mr. Craw ford was highly respected for his many sterling qualities, and his death will be regretted by many relative's and friends. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, and bad been an Elder in that denomination lor many years.-Phoenix. DEATH OK AN EMINENT SOUTH CAR OLINIAN.-Hon. Gcorgo A. Trenholni, a prominent citizen of Charleston, departed this life nt his residence, in that city, on Saturday. Mr. Tren h ol m was the Secre tary f thc Treasury of the Confedernto State?, at the time of the collapse. He was in the Legislature before and since the war. His death will be universally regretted, as he ws un active, go-ahop ', business man. i_o has been in bad health for many months. His age waa 70.-Phonix.
