preaching, we lieg to remind our friend? j
throughout thia section that thc prepara
tiona now making by the officers <jt the As
sociation ar? intended to make the coming
orhibitlon equal in interest und importance
to any of itu predecessors. It will depend
largely upon the form?is, manufacturers and
mechanics, who are asked to contribute the
products of their industry, skill and inge
nuity for exhibition, whether we arc to have
a successful and imposing display, and to
these classes we apical w'Ah perfect confi
dence, believing that they witt uuitc with
the officers of tho Association in keeping up
thc spirit of improvement and development
so manifestly encouraged and promoted by
previous exhibitions. The absorbing in
terest in political topic- should not beget in
difference on the pjtft of the public bl thia
industrial display, and wc would suggest
that a truce be agreed upon for the three
duya allotted to the County Fair, and that
the people generally observe ?hose days ns a
season of recreation from the labor and ex
citement incident to a heated polit Va! cam
paign. We feel ensured tba', the ladled of
the country will cordlolly co-operate with
the Association, and most heartily sympa
thize with tho su-gestion that the County
Fuir shnll bc regarded as usual hy oil classes
as a time for general re-union and cessation
of lab-rs of every description.
The Board of Directors have extended an
invitation to Gen. Alfred H. Colquitt, of
Georgia, to deliver an agricultural address at
some convenient time during the Fair.
Gen. Colquitt his been thc President of the
P'atc Agricultural Society of Georgia for a
number of years, and only recently resigned
that position, soon after bc was nominated
by thc Democratic State Convention for thc
position of Governor. The election in
Georgi.t taken place next week, and Gen.
Colquitt wilt undoubtedly be chosen to
serve thc people an thsir chief magistrate.
We sincerely trust, it may prove compatible
with his engagements at home to accept the
invitation to come amongst us, and more
especially because 'uo is fitted by education
and exjierience to give wise counsels to an
agricultural community.
Tba great success which attended the
cooking contest lost year has induced thc
Association to offer another premium for
tho best dinner, ty be cooked and crvcd on
the Fair Grounds, by any unmarried lady
under eighteen years of oge. Thc premium
is n first-class cooking stove. Young indies
desiring to compete for this handsome and
useful premium roust give notice to the Sec
retary on or before the Otb of October, in
order that suitable arrangements may bc
made. As tho number of contestants will
be limited, it Ls important that all desirous
of competing for this premium will take
special notice of the time fixed for entering
their names.
The list of general premiums embraces
the customary variety, including all articles
of domestic skill and industry. Premium
lists eau bc obtained on application at thLs
office.

LI?GSJ LIEETinO AT DOUBLE ?PBIMQO.
The mass meeting held at Double Springs
on last Saturday was an entire suer-'is in
every respect, and our friends of the Fork
Democratic Club may congratulate them
selves upon the occasion. Between eight
hundred and a thousand persons were pres
ent, including several hundred ladies, whoso
I bright ?miles and cheering approbation of
the good cause enhance the enthusiasm and
zeal of tl?e campaign. Maj. G. W. Maret
acted as chairman of the meeting, and in
troduced tin jpeakers. Messrs. W. C.
Brown, lt. PT', Simpson, James L. Orr, H.
II. Vandivcr and E. M. Rucker addressed
the crowd before dinner, and Messrs. J. W.
Harrison and John B. Moore after thc recess.
Several colored men made pointed and en
couraging remarks before thc meeting closed,
and thc best feeling prevailed throughout
thc day. The hospitality of the Fork was
exemplified in an unusual degree, and thc
whole occasion was marked by an earnest
ness and determination which presages a
faithful and brilliant record on election day.
A CARD.
? To the Voting Citizens of Anderson County:
I am in entire accord with tho platform
and principles enunciated by thc Democracy
of our country ; and one of their first decla
rations, when forming clubs for the cam
paign, was to make the office seek the man
and not to encourage thc seeking of thc
office by the man. But since the notice of
my own name by kind friends of various
clubs, I am urged to canvass, as others are
said to do, but this I am unable to do on
account of fecblR health, ?nd my friends
1 must therefore excuse what may seem to be
1 indifference. I have never Lad but one po
? litieal faith-my motto is, "Honesty and
1 capacity for office," thc lowest possible taxes
" consistent with a creditable administration
' of the government, few offices and officers,
^ short and working sessions by thc Legisla
1 turo, low fees, salaries or per diem; let the
officers be servants rather than masters of
, their constituents, and encourage that gov
f eminent which dispenses the greatest good
to the grcatcat number. To these and kin
\ dred sentiments I am fur from being indif
. fercnt ; nay, .rho could bc indifferent or who
: can dare even to remain idle wdicn our moth
. er country is to sj>cedily bc redeemed from
> those shackles which threaten lier disaolu

? with a portion ten fold above her ability to
s bear ; she needed a stimulant composed of
t equal parts of "Honesty and capacity," and
instead thereof her pretende! physicians
gave her an unbearable dose of ignorance.
1 Imbecility and corruption ; when her resto
" ration required the fewest of well-skilled
. nurses in thb various denn- ments, shebas
" been bcsclged with on innumerable host of
. pretenders who fill every possible niche, and
B thus forbid even thc breathing or healthy
8 atmosphere, until nbc is well nigh suflbca
. tea ; and. above all, when abc most needed
1 mutual confidence, forbearance and harmo
.', nv in thc household, those quacks stirred up
- jealousy, animosity and bickering amongst
. her children, thereby giving to themselves
thc opportunity-which they havo made
haste to improve-of robbing her tills, emp
tying her pantries, ruining her credit and
1 degrading her children unlil they have so
L completely bankrupted her entire estate that
1 even children's children must suffer in con
1 seque... J thereof; and now those croakers
. have thc audacity to tell us that they arc
c thc only phyaiciana that can effect a cure.
I May God speedily deliver us from such
? monsters, and may tho people all cry,
t "Amen."
I submit my past as a guarantee for thc
future, if on thc 19tb of October my friends

my claims, I remain, obediently,

TUE RAD?CAIL PROGRAMME.--The Co
lumbia Phoctnix makes the following
statement of the Programms agreed upon
hy ibo leaders' cf tho Radica? party in
thh.oiate: ^
It bas been divulged recently that tho
Radical party aro to hold no morn public
matinga during the present canvass.
Thia course, wo learn, wa? resolved, npon
in the secret session of tue late Radical
State Convention The object of this
move on tho political chess-board la eaid
to bc to mateo it apr ?rent that tho Demo
crats intend to co tuoue the procesa of
intimidation, which, the Radicals allege,
has already been inaugurated in thia
State. The leaders of thia faction hope
in this way to be able to make out a case
sufficiently strong to iuduco the author!
ties at Washington to declare at least
half the counties in South Carolina under
martial law, in order that tho vote of tbs
State may be cast foi their party. The
presence of Gov. Chamberlain at tho na
tion tl capital, just now, accompanied by
?orno of tho greater light? of bia peculiar
creed, whoso mission is presumed to be
of a political nature, would seem to giro
some coloring to tho statements made
above. As additional evidence, it ia a
noticeable fact that, since the adjourn
ment of the Convention, there havo boen
no Kr heal public meetings held, nor
any announced to be holden.
A colored member of tbs late Conven
tion, who went over into North Carolina,
the other day, is reported to have di
vulged this programme of bia party in
presence of it Democrat, from whom w?
obtained the intelligence. AU of which
may or may not be the truth. We are,
however, loth to believe that tho great
Democratic party of thc uation would
stand idly hy and witness euch a nagrpnt
violation* of tho Constitutlonj as the de
claration of martial law, perpetrated
upon auy section of the Union. That
tho Radical party should attempt such
measures is but in keeping with their
former history. The rule und ruin policy
is their motto, to which they arc os fully
committed as Ephraim was to lu's idols.
- A gentleman T/ho had married n sec
ond time indulged in recurring too often
in conversation to tho beauties and vir
tues of Iiis first consort. He had, how
ever, barely discernment enough to dis
cover that tbc subject was not an
agreeable ono to bis prcsont lady.
"Excuse rae, madam," bc said, "I cannot
help expressing my regrets for tho dear
deceased." "Upon my houor," said the
lady, "I can most heartily affirm that I
am aa sincere a mourner for ber as you
can be."
