THE INTELLIGENCER.
LOCAL MATTERS.
BRIEF MENTION.
Both editors are away this week, and any
improvement in the Intelligencer for this
issue may be attributed to the "devil," who
has full "sway for a brief season.
The Elberton Ga??e says that J F. Craft,
on the Savannah River, is running four
boats regularly to Augusta, and at one ship?
ment last week he carried 300 bales of cotton.
The Timmonsville Newt records the death
of Rev. Allen McCorquodale, an aged and
- highly respected minister of the South Caro?
lina Conference, who died in Bishopville on
Saturday, 13th inst, after a protracted ill?
ness. The deceased was a native of Scot?
land, and was well known to many of our
readers.
The Spartonburg Sparton, in speaking of
the anniversary orations before the literary
societies of Wofford College, pays a high
compliment to our young friend, Mr. J., G.
Clinkscales, who was chosen orator of the
Preston Literary Society, and acquitted him?
self with great credit.
We have been informed by Col. J. Cox
Gass that there will be a drove of fine Ten?
nessee hogs at this place about next Wednes?
day or Thursday. This news will be hailed
with delight by the lovers of sausage and
chitterlings. We do not know at what
price they are to be sold.
Saleday in December promises to be an
important one in Anderson. There is to be
a very large quantity of land sold by the
Sheriff, and there will be a mass meeting in
the interests of the Blue Ridge Railroad. It
is probable more persons will be here on
that day than have assembled at Anderson
at one time in several years.
The Greenville Neun states that a colored
boy named John Johnson, supposed to be
from-Andaman County, offered a steer for
sale one day last week in Greenville. The
low price at which the animal was offered
excited the suspicion of Capt Greer, chief of
police, and he arrested Johnson, who con?
fessed he had stolen the animal from Mr. A.
Rice, of Anderson County. Johnson mode
his escape; but Capt." Greer has the steer,
awaiting the owner.
A note from Mr. M. W. Newton informs
us that he had the luck of tilling on eagle
on his premises, near the line of Pickens
and Anderson, the other day. The bird
measured seven feet from tip to tip, had
claws three inches long, and a beak neat
three inches, very hooked. He saw the
eagle alight to the ground, and threw a
rock, which struck it on the head and killed
it instantly.
A postal card from the proprietor and
manager of the Clara Wiklman Theatrical
Company informs us that this troup will be
In Anderson in the course of a few days.
This neews will he received with delight by
our citizens, and especially by those whose
Ljood fortune it was to attend the Splendid
entertainments of tms Company during
their visit to this place last winter. Come
ahead, Clara, and we bespeak for you a lib?
eral patronage.
We are requested to state that services
wfll be?conducted in the Presbyterian
church at Belton, by appointment of the
Presbytery of South Carolina, by the follow?
ing ministers of that church: .Rev. D. L\
Frierson, third Sabbath in December; Rev.
Wm. C. Smith, third Sabbath in January;
Rev. Mr! Glasgow, fifth Sabbath in Janua?
ry; Rev. Hugh McLees, third Sabbath in
February; Rev. Robert Bead, third Sabbath
in March.
The bridges over the Railroad cut in town
are in bad order, with the exception of the
road bridge on Main Street, and should, if
possible, be attended to. McDuffie JStreet
has for some time been stopped up by its
unsafe bridge, and the sidewalk bridge on
Main Street is -decayed and insecure, though
it is used without any immediate appearance
of danger. * Our town authorities should try.
once more to look after our interests by in?
ducing^ compelling the railroad company
to re-build them.
We . arc much gratified at the deserved
promotion of our friend and townsman, Mr.
A. B. Towers, who was elected last week to
^"?iJieltonorable position of Grand Worthy
Patriarch of the Sons of Temperance in
South Carolina. He was the unanimous
choice of the delegates, we understand, and
we are confident will meet their expecta?
tions as the head of the-order. For more
than a quarter of a century, Mr. Towers has
iilustra ted the principles of this noble insti?
tution in his daily walk and conservation,
and pro von himself unfaltering in principle
and serious in good works. Such men de?
serve the honors of their associates.
Our enterprising townsman, Maj. A. R.
. Broylee, has recently purchased the splendid
plantation, known as the Maxwell place,
lying about three miles above the town of
Townville, for which he paid the sum of
$4,000 cash. While ws will regret very
much to see the Major leave Anderson, we
cannot refrain from congratulating the peo
-ple of the Fork unon so valuable an addi?
tion to their already large number of suc?
cessful and enterprising farmers. We un?
derstand, however, that Maj. Broyles does
not intend removing to his new home until
the latter part of next year.
We learn that the Sons of Temperance
of this place contemplate giving a fair or hot
supper during the Christmas holidays, for the
purpose of raising funds to cid them in
miking additional improvements on their
hall. Committees have been appointed to
wait upon our citizens and solicit donations
in the way of edibles or fancy work, and hi
fact any thing that will be of service to them
in making their entertainment a success.
A? this entertainment will be given in the
interest of so noble and praise worthy a cause
as that of temperanc?, we hope that our
citizens, and especially the ladies, will re?
spond liberally tc the call for assistance.
We have already noticed the fact that Mr.
J. Karle Lewis was quite successful at the
Georgia State Fair. A correspondent of the
Augusta Chronicle and Sentinel referred to
Mr. Lewis in the following terms: "The
walking match was not exciting, but J.
Eorle Lewis, the blooded horse and
thorough-brad cattle raiser, of Oconec Coun?
ty, S. C, put in his beautiful blooded black
co?t, "Raven," whose superb walking took
the $50 premium, and won universal com?
mendation. Mr. L. has done a good thing
for the Fair by his display of cattle and
horses, and ought to be a Georgian." We
obi sent from the latter part of this sentence,
as we cannot spare Mr. Lewis from t his"sido
of the Savannah River, where he is doing a
good work by his example and energy in
the stock line.
Messrs. Seibcls & Ezell, of Columbia, on
Wednesday, 24th inst, began the sale of a
large number of valuable lots and farms in
and around Seneca City. This growing
town is situated at the crossing of the Air
line and Blue Ridge Railroads in Oconee
County, as our readers are aware, and in one
of the healthiest and most delightful sec?
tions of the country. The water, the air,
the scenery, the railway facilities, the quali?
ty of the soil, and the iron and gold mines
in the immediate vicinity, combine to make
the property at that place desirable to set?
tlers. The Bale will be continued until all
the lots are disposed of, and arrangements
have been made with the railroads for ex?
cursion tickets at one fare.
COUNTY ASSESSMENT.
We axe indebted to Mr. J. H. von Hasslen,
the efficient clerk of our County Auditor,
for the elaborate tabular statement of the
assessment for Anderson County published
in another column, which shows the value
of the personal property in the County to?
gether with the value of its annual crop.
The period for which the assessment was
made was from July 1st, 1S74, to June 1st,
1875, making only eleven months, and hence
it is smaller in many respects than it would
otherwise have been. It only represents
eleven months of business instead of twelve,
and it so happens that the entire wheat crop
of this year is excluded from the assessment.
The time hereafter will be from June to
June of each year.

The following have been the receipts of
the Southern Express Company for business

The tabular statement of the real property
of the County will be given next week.
A STATEMENT.
As the attorney who represented the
County Commissioners in the case against
a numb.'r of citizens of the Fork township
for not performing road duty, we deem it
our dutv to all the parties that we should
make a brief statement of the facts, without
taking a ay sides upon the question, that the
public may see the caso from an impartial
seand point ?
Sometime about the latter part of October
last, the gentlemen whose names appear to
an articles upon this subject in this issue,
were reported to the district highway over?
seer for violation of the road law in refusing
to work upon a certain road under the di?
rections of the captain of the hands. The
highway overseer reported the case to the
Commissioners, and one of them ordered
the parties, who were reported as violators
of the law, to be indicted. When the cap?
tain of the hands was ordered to indict these
parties he took the warrants out before Trial
Justice Whitefield, and when the case came
on for trial an attempt was made to transfer
it to the Fork township. This, however,
failed, and as all the witnesses on both sides
were present, and as the jury was composed
of some of our best and most intelligent citi-.
zens, the trial was undoubtedly, a fair one,
though it may have been an inconvenience
to the defendants to come to the Court
House-for trial After the testimony was
adduced it was evident that it would not in '
any event justify the conviction of Messrs.
R. T. Barton, J. T. Compton and T. S. Cole,
and therefore the prosecution was nolproued
as to them. The only persons against
whom there was testimony to convict were
Messrs. J. R. Callaham and J. A. P. Barton.
We do not propose to comment upon the
conviction of the parties. The facts as to
Mr. Barte n are correct as stated, except that
he was wi.rned out with one set of hands,
and disregarded the warning to accept a
second warning from another source. The
facts stated with regard to the conduct of
the captain of the hands agreeing to disre?
gard any instructions to re-work that road
were relied upon to excuse the defendants,
but of course it was decided that while it
might malte the captain liablemimself it did
not excuse! any one else.

extending below his knees, small red cap
and long hair, with satchel swung from his

ucated and pious Turk."
