THE INTELLIGEKOER.
LOCAL. MATTERS.
BEIEF MEXTION.
As we go to press, the Ladies' Store is
crowded with visitors who are inspecting
the rare display of elegant and beautiful
goods arranged for the Grand Opening.
We regret to announce the death of Mr.
John Dalrymple, an aged citizen of our
County, which occurred at bis residence,
some miles northeast of this place, on last
Thursday afternoon.
Rev. J. D. McCullougb, of Spartanburg,
will preach regularly hereafter in the Epis?
copal Church of this place, on the fourth
Sabbath in each month. He also supplies
the church at Pendleton once a month.
Bishop Howe, of the Episcopal Church,
was on a visit to Anderson during the last
week, and delivered interesting sermons in
Grace Church on Sunday last, morning and
afternoon. His Uttlc flock in this parish
were much encouraged by the Bishop's
visit.
We are indebted to the managers for an
invitation to an entertainment of charades
and tableaux vivants, to be given in Seneca
City on Friday evening, the 24th inst., for
tbe benefit of the Church at that place.
This is a laudable enterprise and should re?
ceive a liberal patronage.
Mr. J. Reese Fant returned home on last
Tuesday morning from a trip to Rochester,
K. Y., whither he had been on matrimonial
business. It is useless to add that bis trip
Was an eminently successful one as he
brought his bride back with him. May
happiness and prosperity ever attend their
lives.
For the benefit of the gentlemen of tbe
law in our community who may have busi?
ness in the Court of Bankruptcy, we will
state that Judge Bryan will sit, at Chambers,
at tbe new Court House in Greenville on the
28th and 29th instants, for the purpose of
hearing motions and passing orders in bank?
ruptcy.
A splendid opening for young men, raid
? -dhvaged men and old men, who are sub?
scribers to the Anderson Intelligencer, is now
offered. The privilege is accorded them to
make an examination of our subscription
books, where their names are duly recorded,
and which will reveal much curious, inter?
esting and valuable information. Office
hours from 8 a. m. to G p. m.
"Cheap for cash" is no longer the motto
of one of our merchants. He says that it is
best to sell cheaper on a credit, for then in
case the debt remains unpaid his losses will
not be so heavy. We intend to make him
carry this theory into practice, and will ut?
terly refuse to divulge bis name, as we want
to keep him on this line for our own exclu?
sive benefit.
Messrs. Arnstein & Rose have received a
large and well selected stock in the various
lines of a dry goods store, and will be
pleased to liave the business public of our
County call and examine their stock at the
store formerly occupied by Messrs. Lewis &
Co., on Granite Row. They will doubtless
build up a fine trade by their energy and
enterprise.
The equinoctial storm was slightly ahead
of time this year, and gave tbe inhabitauta
of this region an unexpected visit, on Friday
and Saturday last, when fires and winter
clothing were decidedly agreeable. The fall
has now set in with earnestness, and we
Bball bid farewell for a season to light fab?
rics, open windows, flies and musquitoes.
Tbe last named is not invited to return so
numerously, at least.
We are glad to sec that the Town Marshal,
Mr. Clark, has been making some substan?
tial improvements upon the northern por?
tion of Main street. Among other sensible
work, he has bad a quantity of sand thrown
upon the side-walk in front of Mrs. Todd's
residence, and thereby rendered this very*
muddy bill-side more agreeable for pedestri?
ans. Now is the time for work upon the
streets to be pushed with vigor, as a little
now is worth more than a great deal after
tbe rainy season sets in.
The revival meeting at the Cross Roads
Church ended on Sunday night, after being
in progress exactly two weeks, resulting in
the addition of eighty-eight persons to the
membership. Thirteen were received by
letter and seventy-five by exjierience. The
administration of the baptismal ordinance,
owing to unavoidable circumstances, was
postponed until next Sabbath morning at
ten o'clock. A large congregation attended
the service on last Sunday, and listened to
an able sermon by tbe pastor, Rev. E. R.
Carswell, who up to that time had preached
twenty-two sermons during the meeting.
He was assisted one or two days by Rev.
E. C. Rice. The meeting has been a remark?
able one, and the deep solemnity pervading
every gathering of the people, day and night,
with the utmost propriety and decorum on
tbe part of all, are mentioned as marked
and interesting features of the meeting.
BIBLE SOCIETY.
The twenty-seventh anniversary meeting
of the Anderson County Bible Society will
be held in the Presbyterian Church on Sun?
day next, 26th inst., at eleven o'clock a. m.
The anniversary sermon will be preached at
that hour by Rev. L. M. Aycr, after which
the regular business of the Society will bo
transacted, and all persons interested in the
Bible cause are invited to participate. Rev.
E. A. Bolles, District Superintendent of the
American Bible Society for South Carolina,
is expected to be present, and will be the
guest of Col. J. N. Brown during bis stay in
Anderson.
SAFDY SP2INGS.
The annual Camp Meeting at this Camp
Ground began on Thursday last and con?
tinued, we believe, until Monday evening.
The meeting was an unusually interesting
one to the denomination, as it had the addi?
tional feature of the presence of the District
Meeting. The exercises on Sunday of
course attracted greater public attention
than any other portion of the session. The
crowd present was not near so large as usual,
in consequence of the disagreeable and
threatening weather, but it was more order?
ly than usual. At 8 o'clock a. m. on Sab?
bath morning Rev. S. Lander, of the Wil
liamston Female College, preached an ex?
cellent sermon, and at 11 o'clock the Rev.
Whiteford Smith, formerly of Wofford Col?
lege, delivered an eloquent and able dis?
course. In the afternoon there was a Sab?
bath School mass meeting, which was ad?
dressed by Revs. E. J. Mcynardic, W. !>u
Pre and S. Lander. At night services were
conducted by Rev. E. J? Meynardk' Tin
occasion was enjoyed by lho.-c who were
present.
THE COTTON "WEIGHER.
The difficulty between the merchants and
th'e Town Council has at last been settled by
an agreement between the parties as follows:
Messrs. E. E. Kcese and J. B. McGec both
cease weighing?Mr. Kccsc having resigned,
and Mr. J. C. Keys is elected weigher until
Saleday in October, at which time the Mas?
ters of the various Granges in the County
are to meet two representatives from the
Board of Trade to designate some man re?
siding without the Town of Anderson, as
the weigher, who shall receive for his servi?
ces five cents per bale for every bale of cot?
ton weighed, and may decide upon the ques?
tion of damage to cotton or not, as such
conference committee may decide.
This is to be a final settlement of the
whole difficulty, so we hope our farmers
will no longer hesitate to bring their cotton
to this market. Further notice will be
given next week as to this subject.
Ml
TEMPERANCE PIC NIC.
"Wearc requested by the Committee of
Arrangements to announce that there will
be a pic nie at Hopewell Church on Satur?
day, the 9th of October next, given under
the auspices of Hopcwell Division No. 95
of Sons of Temperance. The regular quar?
terly installation of officers is to take place,
and speeches from P. K. McCully and E. B.
Murray, upon the subject of temperance, aro
expected in the forenoon, and from B. F.
Crayton, upon the improvements in agricul?
ture, and Dr. W. C. Brown, upon energy, in
tl^ afternoon. Temperance organizations
are especially invited to participate in the
gathoring, and the general public are re?
quested to attend with the proverbial pic
nie basket.
CHARLESTON ILLUSTRATED.
This is the title of a handsome book com?
prising 240 pages, with nearly one hundred
illustrations, just published by Messrs.
Walker, Evans & Cogswell, of Charleston.
The merchants of that city are desirous that
Charleston should be better known through?
out the interior, and have published this
book for free distribution, which shows
commendable energy and enterprise on their
part. We have received ninety copies for
distribution among our merchants and busi?
ness men, who will please call and get the
same. _
MUNICIPAL ELECTION.
At ah election held in Williamston on
Monday, loth inst., for Intendant anil War?
dens to serve the ensuing year, the following
gentlemen were duly elected: W. A. Ste?
phens, Intendant ; J. D. Johnson, A. J.
Bradley, W. W. Holder and James H.
Gaines, Wardens.
Familiar faces are always gladly hailod
among us. This is certainly a fact regard?
ing Mr. P. P. Toale's advertisement which
appears in another column. We can safely
say that Mr. Toale is the champion manu?
facturer of doors, sash and blinds, to which
he adds a large list of requisites for the com?
pletion of any building. To the needy we
say "send for his prices."
At the District Conference, recently held
at Sandy Springs Cam]) Ground, the follow?
ing resolution was passed, and requested to
be published in all the papers within the
Presiding Elder's District:
Resolved, That the Supcrintendants of
Sunday Schools, within the bounds of this
Presiding Elder's District, be, and are here?
by, urgently advised to cause to be repeated
by their schools, whenever they meet, the
Ten Commandments, the Apostles' Creed
and the Lord's Prayer, as a part of the
School exercise.
MARKETS.
Anderson, Sept. 22, 1875.
The cotton market during the past week
has exhibited signs of increasing activity,
and our merchants are entering briskly upon
the business season. One hundred and for?
ty-one bales were sold during the week end?
ing at noon to-day, and the market closes
with quotations frum 11J to 12 cents.
