? There are some merchants who affect to believe that the immense business done by A. T. Stewart & Co., of New York, is mainly at? tributable to the superior advantages enjoyed by the firm, and not to any particular sagacity. How widely they miss the mark a recital of one &ct will evidence. The amount of money expended for advertising by A. T. Stewart & Co. during last year was ?800,000. Here is one of the principal secrets of their prosperity. They know the value of printer's ink, and are not backward in taking advantage of their knowledge. Such advantages might be en? joyed by every firm in the country. A. T. Stewart & Co. have not a monopoly of the privilege of advertising. HYMENEAL. For five days previous to her death she was deprived of reason and speech, conse? quently unable to state her prospects bej'ond the grave; yet, the life she lived was such as to establish" beyond a reasonable doubt that she was fully prepared to meet her God with? out condemnation. Always patient, submis? sive and cheerful under all circumstances, never murmuring in sickness or health, but always exhibiting that patient resignation to the will of God as becomes a true Christian. Although she was unostentatious in the Chris? tion religion which she professed, yet it was manifested constantly in all her acts of life. She has left an example behind worthy to bo followed by her husband and children, and all that desire to live and die a true Christian. Taxes are an item now, and parties (rtlght to bike as much interest in the matter as they would in selling a mule or a bale of cotton. It is best to make a memorandum of their effects at homo; also of the number of Returns made, and in what Township, or if an addi? tional return, (which is the same as another Township); and when they pay their taxes, to get as many receipts as they made Returns. Or if they get another party to pay for them, to post them up in these matters, and when the receipts aro obtained, to see that all the Real and Personal Property they own is included. "The fact, we believe, is indisputable that, so far as the Sewing Machine is concerned,-Americans mn put in the best claim to having been its inventors, and not to having been its inventors merely, but to having been mainly instru? mental in affording to the world at largo the incalculable benefits resulting from this great desideratum of the age. "Few inventions, more (ban that of the Sowing Machine, have produced a livelier interest in the public mind. What wonder, therefore, that its advent among a people.so prover? bially prone to exorcise their inventive faculties should have awakened a spirit of competition in the same line of discov ?|ory? What wonder that a mushroom growth of Sewing jpMachines should, in consequence (and in no protracted space |r of time), havo.been the result? We have neither the leisure nor the space just now, however, to justify the attempt on our part to give anything like a complete history of what may be designated the strife for pre-eminence among Sewing Machine Manufacturers in this city during (we will say) the last twenty years. Lot us commence, therefore, with the year 1871. In that year no less than twenty-live different Sewing Machine Companies (each intent upon producing in the public mind an exalted idea of its own Machine) were in most active competition ; and each, as a mat? ter of course, willing to base its claims to pre-eminence upon the amount of sales to be effected by it during the year. In other words, the sales of any particular Machine were considered the true index of its popularity. Well, in tho above year, 1871, TUB SINGER MANUFACTU? RING COMPANY sold 281,260 Machines, being just 1,890 more than were sold by its two prin? cipal competitors during said year. "During the year 1872, the Singer Manufacturing Company effected sales to tho amount of | 219,708 Machines, outnumbering those of its principal competitor during said period 45,670. "In lS7:i the sales of the Singer .Manufacturing Company reached 232,444, being 113,254 more than were sold during the said year by its highest competitor, and as many as wero sold by all its other competitors combined.' "And here it is worthy of remark that, while the sales of the principal companies this year (1S73) fell very considerably short of their sales in 1872, thoso of the Singer Manufac. Co. wero largely increased. Well, conformably with th^ir settled practice, the practice, we mean of in lcreasing their sales each,succooding* year, the SINGER MANUFACTURING COMPANY, last year, (1874) brought their sales tip to the astonishing figure of 241,670, BEATING THEIR ?I0ST FORMIDABLE COMPETITOR 143,842, But tho sales of that competitor show a falling off in 1874, as compared with 1873, of over 2(j,000 Machines ! where (as already stated) the sales of the Singer Company show an increase year by year, and the sales of the other Companies, for several years at least, show a decrease. We are governed in our statements by reliable "Statistics of Sales'' made to the owners of the princi? pal patents by those licensed under them. And in this place let us repeat that wo hold to the rule that the comparative sales of a Machine constitute a good criterion ol its merits, and more especially so when the rule in question has been thorough!}- tested through a series of years.
