The Reunion of Orr's Regiment,
The proposition of Mr. N. K. Sullivan to
secure a re-union of Orr's Regiment of Rifles
during the summer has met with favorable re?
sponses from Abbeville, Oconee and Marion>
end we believe that proper efforts will secure a
large attendance. The occasion would be de?
lightful, pleasing and tostrurjtive, and can be
made exceedingly gratifying to all who will
attend. Besides, this meeting ought to inau?
gurate measures to preserve the records and
perpetuate the gallant deeds of this noted
command, which participated in many of the
^conflicts of the war, and added lustre to the
?honorable name of South Carolina. We ex?
tract from several exchanges the annexed com?
mendatory notices of the proposed meeting:
Abbeville Medium: It is proposed to have a
re-union of Orr's Rifle Regiment at some time
?during the present year. It will be remem?
bered that ft part of the old regiment, at the
Suggestion of the Medium, followed Minister
T)rr to his grave when he was brought back
from Russia. Although that occasion was sad,
*tho3e of the old regiment present were much
?benefitted by the meeting. The re-union of
the old regiment would be most pleasant, and
\ve hope the movement may be successful.
Walhalla Courier: We call attention to the
tetter of Lieut. N. K. Sullivan, of Anderson,
suggesting a re-union of Orr's Regiment of
Rifles at Walhalla or Sandy Springs, during
the present summer. Four of the ten Compa?
nies comprising the Regiment were from Pick
?ens District, now Oconee aud Pickens Counties.
We heartily approve of the meeting, and think
Walhalla should be the place of meeting.
-First, because it is a pleasant summer resort,
"-and affords facilities for members attending
the gathering, to enjoy a visit to the moun?
tains. Second, because it affords ample accom?
modations for all, which cannot be had at
?Sandy Springs, and is also accessible by rail.
Third, because it is the County Beat and centre
of the County furnishing the largest propor?
tion of four out of the ten companies.
We will take pleasure in forwarding the
object proposed, by giving publicity to the
views of Col. Miller, should he deem it proper I
to request such a meeting at Walhalla or else
where.
Marion Star: Capt. N. K. Sullivan, in a card
in the Anderson Intelligencer, suggests a re?
union of the ten companies, one of which was
from Marion, which composed the gallant Reg-j
iment of Rifles, to take place during the sum-1
mer at Walhalla or Sandy Springs. This will
bring together in a social meeting old com?
rades from Abbeville, Anderson, Pickens, Oco
nee and Marion, where, free from the anxieties I
of war, they can revive cherished memories
dear to the soldier's heart. The first comman?
der of this, one of the best and most gallant I
- regiments of our State, was Col. James L. Orr,
who died not long since in Russia, where he
represented the United States as Minister to
the Court of St. Petersburg, and the last com?
mander was Col. G. McD. Miller, who is now
living at Ninety Six. We hope that McKay
and Braddy and the rest who survived the
lamented Fairlee and those noble sons who
rest by his side in Virginia, will see that the I
"Pee Dee Guards" are represented at this in?
teresting occasion. It is suggested that a re
cord be taken of those who have fallen which
will be of much benefit to the historian oft
after years.
JS&~ It is Tritly Wondbrful, the variety
and ingenuity of the conveniencies for the desk
and office?Pens of varied patterns, Inkstands I
possesssing numberless advantages, Letter
Files, each one the best, Envelopes of size and (
qualities infinite. It is almost oewildering to
enter the large Broad Street Store of Walker, I
Evans <fc Cogswell, in Charleston, and see the
number of these attractions. Here you find ]
the largest Stationery Stock south of Balti- (
more, and you only have two troubles?first, 1
sufficient cash; and second, the difficulty in]
deciding among the many things offered, each
equally suitable to your wants.

the 8th, 9th and 10th of July, 1875.
According to a recent Act of the Legislature,
Tax Payers will return their Property on hand
the first day of June, instead of the first day of
July, as heretofore. There being no assess- j
ment of Realty this year, we would advise all1
those who have bought or sold Real Estate
since the first day of July last, to make their
Returns at the Auditor's Office, in order to pre?
vent errors, Ac.
After the 20th of July, all Returns received
are additional Returns, and a penalty of fifty
per cent, is added for neglecting to return be?
fore that time, except in cases of sickness, out
of the County, Ac.
We hope that Tax Payers will bo a little
more careful in making their Returns. Taxes
are an item now, and parties ought to take as
much interest in the matter as they would in
selling a mule or a bale of cotton.
It is best to make a memorandum of their
effects at home; also of the number of Returns
made, and in what Township, or if an addi?
tional return, (which is the same as another
Township); and when they pay their taxes, to
get as many receipts as they made Roturns.
Or if they get another party to pay for them, to
post them up in these matters, and when the
receipts are obtained, to seo that all the Real
and Personal Property they own is included.
If not, there is a screw loose. By so doing, all
this extra cost, trouble and penalties may be
saved.

Count}' Auditor.

SEWING MACHINES AND THEI? SALES.
From the New York Da?y NexCs.
"The fact, we believe, is indisputable that, so far as the
Sewing Machine is concerned, Americans can put in the
best claim to having been its inventors, and not to having
been its invontors merely, but to having been mainly Instru?
mental in attbrding to the world at large the incalculable
benefits resulting from this great desideratum of the age>
"Few inventions, more than that of the Sewing Machine,
have produced a livelier interest in the public mind. What
Wonder, therefore, that its advent among a pcoplo so prover?
bially prone to exercise their inventive faculties should havo
awakened a spirit of competition in the same line of disrov
-^3Sery? What wonder that a mushroom growth of Sewing
Machines should, in consequence (and in no protracted space
p?^r of time), have been the result? We have ncithor the leisure
nor the space just now, however, to justify tho attempt on
our part to give anything like a complete history of What
may be designated the strife for pre-eminence among Sewing
Machine Manufacturers in this city during (we will say) tho
last twonty"years. Let us commence, therefore, with the year 1S71. In that year no less than
twenty-five different Sewing Machine Companies (each intent upon producing in the public
mind an exalted idea of its own Machine) were in most active competition ; and each, as a mat?
ter
by
true
RING
cipal competitors during said year,
^'During the year 18" .
219,758 Machines, outnumberi
"In 1873 the sales of the _
than were sold during the said year by its highest competitor, and as many as were sold by all
its other competitors combined.
"And here it is worthv of remark that, while the sales of tho principal companies this year
(1873) fell very cousider?blv short of their sales in 1872, those of the Singer Manufac. Co. wero
largely increased. Well, conformably with their settled practice, tho practice, we mean of in?
creasing their sales each succeeding year, tho SINGER MANUFACTURING COMPANY,
last year, (1874) brought their sales up to the astonishing liguro of 241,670,
BEATING THEIR MOST FORMIDABLE COMPETITOR 148,842,
But tho sales of that competitor show a falling off in 1874, as compared with 1S73, of over 20,000
Machines! where (as already ?tated) the sales of tho Singer Company show an increase year by
year, and the sales of tho other Companies, for several years at least, show a decrease. We are
governed in our statements by reliable "Statistics of Sales" made to the owners of the princi?
pal patents by those licensed under them. And in this place let us repeat that we hold to the
rule that the comparative sales of a Machine constitute a good criterion ol its merits, and more
especially so when the rule in question has been thoroughly tested through a series of years."
