SOUTHERN ENTERPRISE. We take pleasure in directing the attention of our planters to the Diamond Cotton Chopper, Cultivator and Planter, which we learn has been demonstrated to bo a practical success. It bears high testimonials from gentlemen who used it last season, and is meeting with much favor in the South. The machine is sold under a guarantee to give satisfaction or money refun? ded. The company selling it are endorsed by the leading bank officers of North Carolina as entirely responsible and reliable. NOT A DETECTIVE. The Abbeville Medium devotes a' paragraph last week to the appearance of a gentleman in that community, who remained several days without making his business known to the Hemphillboys or exhibiting certificates of good character, respectable parentage or legitimate calling. Hence, it was concluded that he was a detective, and was scenting out some of the villainy of former County Commissioners, in? vestigating the enormous debt of Abbeville County, or resurrecting the secret history of empty whiskey barrels. "The wicked flee when no man p?rsueth," and this anxiety to ascertain the business and calling of a stranger, together with the conjecture that he was a de? tective, looks a little suspicious for the curi? ous speculators, whose fear of detectives must be morbid to imagine that a harmless and in? offensive sewing machine agent followed that unpleasant occupation. We have the pleasure of relieving the curiosity of the Medium by atating that the .man "with the glossy beaver and blue coat" is none other than Dr. G. E. Dalton, who is special agent of the Singer Sew ' ing Machine Company, and is now traveling around among the local agents to inspect their work and encourage their labors. The Abbe? ville agent was not at home when Dr. Dalton arrived, and he did not imagine that it was necessary to acquaint the town with his private business. But the lynx-eyed editors of the Medium know everything and everybody around Abbeville, (they are not acquainted in Anderson,) and the Dr. missed his opportunity in not interviewing them at once. Next time he will do better. SONS OF TEMPERANCE. At the last regular meeting of Anderson Division, No. 1, Sons of Temperance, the fol? lowing officers were elected to serve for the ensuing quarter: A. J. Watt. W. P. G. F. Tolly, W. A. Jas. M. P. W. L. Bolt, Librarian. This Division, consisting of upwards of one hundred and fifty members, is now in a most prosperous condition, and is weekly receiving many accessions to its ranks. At the last meet? ing twelve new members were received, and we learn that fifteen others are to be received this evening. It seems that the time has now arrived when our people are awakening to a sense of the important duty required of them as useful members of society, and we are glad to see the increasing prosperity of an organiza? tion destined to bring about the greatest good to the community in general. At a meeting of Neal's Creek Division, No. 77, Sons of Temperance, held at Neal's Creek Church on the 27th of March, the following officers were elected for the ensuing quarter: J. A. Major, W. P. J. Aw Appeal to the Masonic Fraternity. ?The following appeal in behalf of the suffer? ing people of Kansas has been issued. All have heard of the devastation -committed by these swarms; but upon applica? tion to Brethren from that section for more full information, I learn that the destitution is pitiable. The crops were consumed, and the very trees were stripped, leaving an alarming amount of destitution, and the imminent threat of fanzine. The rigors of the past se? vere winter must have superseded to the pre? vious suffering. I fraternally invite you then to make such contributions as you are able, for the relief of our destitute and suffering Brethren.
