It is stated that Gen. P. M. B. Young, of Georgia, has declined to accept a prominent military position tendered him by a European power. ? Lyman K. Bass, who has been confirmed as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury, has in? formed the President that he will not accept the office. ? Dr. W. H. Todd, of Anderson, a graduate of the Baltimore Medical Iustitute, and a prom? ising young physician, has recently located at Pickens. ? President Grant and his wife are on a visit to Southwestern Virginia, and have been stopping for a few days at the Greenbrier White Sulphur Springs. ? There is one man in South Carolina who strongly supports R. K. Scott for the next Gov? ernor. The name of this enthusiastic individ? ual is R. K. Scott, formerly of Ohio. ? General James Shields is spoken of as a candidate for Senator from Missouri. The old hero has already been a Senator from Minnesota and Illinois, and will keep moving around. ?Gen. John B. Gordon, of Goorc ia, has been invited to deliver the annual address at the North Carolina State Fair, which commences in the city of Raleigh on the 17th of October. ? A number of energetic citizens in Mobile have taken measures to establish a cotton facto? ry of large proportions, and propose to effect their purpose by fixing the stock at $25 per ? The "irrepressible" Charles P. Leslie, of Land Commission fame, recently arrived in J Barnwell County from his home in the North, j and rumor states that he will be a candidate for the Legislature. -The St. Petersburg Gazette announces that the railway officials have received orders to make arrangements for the Queen of England, who is expected to arrive in Russia about the 14th of September. ? The Springfield (Mass.) Union publishes a letter from Hon. Henry L. Dawes, in which he says that, having served the district in Congress for eighteen years, he shall this year decline a re-nomination. ? In Germany, when the vote of the jury stands six against six the prisoner is acquitted. A vote of seven against five leaves the decis? ion to the court, and by a vote of eight against four the prisoner is convicted. ? A Freuchman has discovered a new comet in the northwestern quarter of the heavens, which may be seen with an opera glass between 9 o'clock at night and 1 o'clock in the morning. It will soon be visible to the naked eye. ? Two weeks ago Mrs. Cook, of Blount county, Ala., missed her three children, the eldest only six years of age. Search was made and they were found drowned in the well. Mrs. Cook weut crazy, and two or three days ago escaped from her attendants and drowned herself in the same well. To prove the last asser? tion, 1 ginned three hundred aud twenty bale-* on mine and never removed the caps from the inks; in fact, I don't think I lost twenty min? utes in all the time from anything wrong with the Gin.
