The Anderson intelligencer. (Anderson Court House, S.C.) 1860-1914, December 21, 1871, Image 3
. During the war many experiments were
made by medical men and others interested in
the subject, to see in how small compass the
most nutriment could be got; and after all the
experiments of physicians, physiologists, patent
right men, savans and investigators on scientific
subjects, they all had to knock under (to use
an expressive, though vulgar, phrase) to an old
hen, or a youug one either?For it was fouud
"that an egg contained a greater amount of nu?
triment, of life-preserving food, in the compass
it'occupies, than of any other known substance.
True,, there are essences of meats, etc, that by
combination with other articles may be as pow?
erful, but alone, the egg is the most nutritious.
There is more life-sustaining clement in a single
egg than twenty times its bulk in bread or food
of that kind.
THE FASHIONS!
Ttxe readers of the Intelligencer are assured
qy the proprietor of the "Emporium of Fash?
ion" at Abbeville, S. C, that his stock of Dry
Goods and Millinery was never so largo and
attractive as it is this season. Nothing that
could be thoagbt of has been left undone. His
stock was bought with a great deal of care.
There are larger stocks in the State, but when
it comes to real handsome and stylish goods,
tho "Emporium of Fashion" is unsurpassed,
Especial attention is called to his stock of Dress
?Goods, Shawls and Millinory, and to many ar
tidfes'foetal and ornamental for ladies, not to
. be found in any other house in the up-country.
Mrs. Cain, in charge of the Millinery Depart?
ment, has been in Baltimore for two months
looking up and studying the styles. She is as
sisted by Miss Small, Mrs. Wieb and Miss
Catob.
The Dress Making Department is in charge
of Miss Tweeddale, lately in charge of a fash?
ionable dross making establishment in Balti?
more. She Is .assisted by tho Misses Tagoart
and three other ladies of skill in this depart?
ment.
Samples of Dress and any other goods that
can be cut, will be sent upon application. La
Mies can order Hats, Bonnets, or anything; in
the Millinery Department, and the goods vriU
be sent by Express.
Satisfaction guaranteed in every case; but,
ladies, do not put your limit too low. We use
rthe best materials, and don't pretend to com?
pete with common materials and untasty work.
Ourtprices for Hats run from $3 to $10. We will
. duplicate any bill of Millinery bought In any
city at one-third less price. But, ladies, we
?would rather you would come, that you can
judge for yourselves, and make your own se?
lections. Passengers by the morning's train
have two hours to stay in Abbeville.
Very respectfully,

The Chief Mark of Beauty.
The ruby lip and sparkling eye,
May speak a world of love;
? A beauty that with angels vie
- The hearts of men to move;
. A matchless grace, a form divine;
. ... A voice lute-toned and low;
, A brow where not a single lino
Mars the smooth front of snow;
' Ah! these are charms I But what if they
Want yet the charm all prizof
In vain the poet's sweetest lay
To handsome lips and eyes,
For if those lips in soft replies
Part, and alas 1 disclose?
Defective teeth?the beauty flies,
The face no longer glows.
In smiles is woman fairest over;
And wc may often find
That but a smile's the magic lever
By which she moves mankind.
? The coral lip and dimpled choek
Make not the smile to win ;
The magic charm we fain would seek,
Gleams from those pearls within.
Then, to all who value beauty's power?
'Tis not in lips, or eyes, or curls?
ti Remember that its richest dower
Lies in those priceless pearls.
Then, if those treasures you would save,
Take warning now, right early;
You can restore the gift you cravo
By calling on Dr. J. W. GURLEY.
