fc?Mfc E. F. Gary, late principal clerk in
the Treasurer's office, has been appointed State
Auditor ad interim, to take effect October 1st,
in place of Maj. E. L. Deane, resigned. Maj.
Deane has left for the West. It is said that
the business of the State Auditor's office is in
a muddle, and that Mr. Gary is a suitable per?
son to bring order out of chaos.
? A Washington dispatch says: Advices
from Ohio indicate that the Republicans will
elect their State ticket in October by a very der
cided majority, but owing to the differences in
the f arty in ilamilton county, the indications
are \ ery favorable for a Legislature in the in?
terest,, of the Conservatives, who, in such an
event, will secure a United States Senator in
place of Mr. Sherman.
The Legislature of Illinois, it is reported
will be placed in an embarrassing situation by
the action of the presiding officers of the two
bodies of which it is composed. The Speaker
of the House of Representatives, it is asserted,
intends to summon that body to meet in special
session in Chicago, on November 15th, and
Lieutenant Governor Dougherty intends to
snmmon the Senate to meet at Springfield, the
State capital, on the same day.
? It would appear from recent reports that
the English Government is about sending a full
Minister to San Domingo, in order to counter
sct -what are called " the designs " of the Uni?
ted States in that region. The new diplomatic
representative is Spencer St. John, who is rep?
resented to be an able, adroit and active man,
with;gTeat experience of the people with whom
he has to deal.
? The opening of- the Mont Cenis tunnel,
which is announced by cable, is one of the
greatest, perhaps the greatest engineering feats
of the age, unless the Suez canal may dispute
the palm with it in this respect. Trains are
now running from Italy into France, by this
tuanel, over and through the Alps. Its con?
struction was a work of great difficulty, being
about eight miles In length.
~ The Tax-Payers' Convention is in session
at Austin, Texas. Governor E. M. Pease is
President, and ninety-five counties are repre?
sented. A resolution has been passed that a
committee be appointed to wait on the Govern?
or and ask his co-operation with the Conven?
tion, for the purpose of reducing taxation.?
Another resolution was passed that no candi?
date be supported at any election who will not
pledge himself to retrenchment and reform.
...tt The New Y/ork Sun, in speaking of the
frequent reports.of the outrages committed by
the Lowry gang in North Carolina, states that
this gang do not belong to the Ku Klux, and
charges upon the Washington administration
that Xhey are negroes, who are permitted to
continue their depredations unmolested, while
a large body of soldiers are for political effect
mustered at the capital of the State, where
there is not the remotest possibility of their
services being required.
? James Neely, living near Ripley, Fair
field county, Ohio, died recently, leaving a for?
tune in money, supposed to amount to $15,000,
but as no one knows where the old gentleman
kept the treasure, the heirs are left the task of
hunting it up. They have gone to work vigor?
ously with pick and shovel, and have pretty
well digged the farm on which Neely lived
from centre to circumference. On his death?
bed Neely refused to give his children informa?
tion as to where he had secreted the money he
wasioown to possess.
