?^dmdnd Jones, Judge of the Second Dis?
trict W North Carolina, has been impeached
for drunkenness.
? Under Radical carpet-bag rule the rate of
taxation in Florida this year.has been fixed at
$1.37 on the $100 of property. This for the
State?the tax for county purpoees is to be ad?
ded. -
?'? -^-The New York World says the last official
Words of the impeached Governor Holden, of
North Carolina were: "It is sweet, but financi?
ally disastrous, to die politically for ones coun?
try?*
? The Savannah Republican mentions the
jnysterious disappearance of Major J. H. Gould,
United States Revenue Collector, with about
$100,000 of Government money.
?t. The parties who have been engaged in?
vestigating the Meridian, Miss., difficulties,
Bay that the troubles were brought about by
the turbulent and overbearing conduct of the
colored people.
'?Commissioner Pleasanton decides that
parsons whose gross income during 1870, esti?
mated in currency, is less" than two thousand
dollars are not required to make income returns,
nor need make affidavit, showing that their
gross income did not exceed that sum.
.? The Chicago Tribune, lead;ng Republican
paper o? the Northwest, says that "the Repub
Lhjan. party must enter the next Presidential
campaign under the heaviest of all loads, the
responsibility for severe and long protracted
dullness in-business."
? The Supreme Court of the United States
pronounced an opinion recently that is of vast
importance in every section of the country.
In a case from Louisiana, it sustained the va?
lidity of notes given for purchase of slaves

ow. The decisions of the Supreme Court are
the supreme law of the land, and the State
Courts are bound to enforce them.
? In a recent debate on the Ku Klux ques?
tion, Senator Ames declared that over eight
hwvdred Republicans has been murdered in
Louisiana within the last sixty days. Senator
Pool averred that from thirty to thirty-five
thousand white men voted the Republican tick
?&4? North Carolina last fall. But Senator
Morton capped the climax of falsehood by sta?
ting that fifty thousand murders bad been com?
mitted in the South since the war. What a
sad spectacle to the country when such as?
tounding falsehoods are gravely uttered in the
United States Senate?a body once honored by
the presence of Calhoun, Clay and Webster,
and their honorable cotemporaries.
