LOCAL NEWS IN BRIEF. Magistrate's Blanks.?We have just printed Magistrate's Executions and Recognizances, ac? cording to the revised form, in good style and on excellent paper. We sell all kinds of blanks at Charleston prices. Th? Weather and Crops.?Tuesday night there was a general rain in this section, and much good ?will likely result, as it had been excessively dry and hot for some days previous. The wheat crop is still promising, and cotton and coru will grow apace under the beneficial effects of rain and sun? shine. Thi Election-.?We have not received the offi? cial return of the electicn held on Tuesday, 25th of May, but understand that Mr. Wm. H. Haynie, independent candidate, who was vo> ed for by both parties, has been elected School Commissioner by a majority of 240 votes over the regular Demo? cratic nominee, Rev. John M. Carlisle. The Tote is scarcely more than one-third of the whole number of persons entitled to vote in this county, and we are not disposed to attach much impor? tance to the result, although it is to be regretted that there is not more unanimity in the Democrat? ic ranks. Mr. George W. Hammond was elected Coroner, without opposition. Mat Term.?The Circuit Court adjourned on Friday last. Only a few cases on the civil docket were disposed of. The following sentences were passed by Judge Carpenter on Thursday : The State vs. John Sullivau, indicted for horse stealing?sentence, two years at hard labor in the Penitentiuxy. The State vs. Allen Williams, colored, indicted for hog stealing?sentence, one year at hard labor in the Penitentiary. The State vs. Julius Alexander, colored, indict? ed for stealing shoes, boots, &c, convicted of grand larceny?sentence, imprisonment in the Penitentiary at hard labor for one year. Homicides.?We learn that on Friday night last, in the neighborhood of Stevenhon's Ferry, on Savannah river, a party of armed persons assailed the house where some colored people lived, and fired into them, resulting in the killing of a negro woman and severely wouuding another. The particulars have not reached us, but wc arc in? formed that the women were quiet and peaceable i??groes, and that there is no apparent cause to which the murder can be traced. It is rumored that the attacking party were negroes. On the same night, near Salubrity, in Pickcns county, a white man by the name of Willard was killed. The stable on the premises was discover? ed to be in flames, when the deceased and his father, with other persons, rushed out of the dwelling, and a volley was fired into them, with the result above stated. From ali we can learn, the attack in this instance was expected, and the combat between the parties was desperate, a num? ber of shots being exchanged. As the matter will probably uudergo official investigation, we will refrain from giving the particulars as related to us. -?? SST Senator Sawyer has our thanks for a copy ?of the Reports of the Special Commissioner of the Revenue for 18G8. It is a compact volume of 142 pages, and contcins very valuable tables, including much important matter for the general reader. Lirx Insurance.?The Abbeville Preza has the following paragraph : "We received on yesterday a visit from Mr. W. B. Siiaw, General Agent of the Equitable Life Insurance Society, who exhibi? ted a check for $10,000, which he is prepared to turn over to the personal representatives of John H. Wilson, Ebq., deceased ; it being the amount of the life policy due by that company. Facts speak louder than words, and comment is unne? cessary." Mr. A. B. Towers is the agent for the Equitable in this village. -? Washington, May 80-?Occasional flowers were thrown on the Confederate graves at Arlington to? day, and produced disturbances which were checked by the guards, who prevented their deco? ration. This policy was enforced upon the author? ities by ruffians, supported by ihoughtless persons, who gathered and trampled upon the flowers. This act, and the necessity to guard the graves, is universally deplored, but the vast aud mixed crowd rendered the guard necessary, otherwise there would have been rows, and probably blood? shed. ? The Horry (S. C.) Afirj says : "A correspon? dent writing us an account of a trip to Wilming? ton by way of private conveyance, says that be stayed one night at the house of a gentleman, whose wife, only forty-two years of age, had her twenty-second child in her arras." ? Mr. Benjamin F. Dew, the owner of Malvern Hill, denies that the bones of Confederate soldiers are being ploughed up on that famous field of but? tle. ? I860 47 BEER, BEER, BEERI -:o: THE Commissioner of Agriculture, in his report for the year 1805, speaks au follows: " There can be no doubt of the general adultera? tion of all malt liquors. In England and other countries, where heavy penalties are imposed, and an increasing vigilance practiced to detect and punish such frauds, by a system of inspection of all mall liquors manufactured before exposed to* sale, the practice is very common. How much more in this country, where there are no laws on the subject, and no officer to carefully analyze the products of the brewery? Some years ago, Pro? fessor Mapes, of New York, analyzed the beer from' a dozen different breweries, and all were fouud adulterated with noxious substance's. Il ia said that the sale of drugs to brewers, is a profit? able part of the trade. This is perfectly infamous. Cocculus indicus, (fish-berry,) nux vomica, (dog button, from which strychnine is obtaiued,) are tome of the delectable substances found in beer. These are potent poisons, and the brewer found using them should be drowned at once in oue of his own vats. The British Parliament passed a law to prevent this nefarious business.
