Magistrate Appointed'.?We leam -.from the
Columbia'Pftotnix that Warren D. Wilkes, Esq.,
ha3 been appointed by Got. Scott a Magistrate
for Anderson County. H is office is located at Bel
ton, we presume.
Temperance Mbettno.?A public installation of
the officers of Anderson Division, No. 20, will take
place in the Court House on to-morrow (Friday)
evening, at early candle-light. An address upon
the subject of Temperance will be delivered by one
of the members. All interested in the cause, and
especially the ladies, are cordially invited to be
present,
'?"'Hon. J. P. Heed.?This gentleman arrived athis
home or Saturday last. He is not over-sanguine
about the result of the coitesfed electionybut ha?_
made every effort to expose the lying fabrications
of>his opponent, and .will yijt succeed','in placing]
himself and his constituents right upon the record.
If nothing else is accomplished, the people will
owe him a debt of gratitude, for we know that his
defence will be a thorough and complete vindica?
tion of this section. Mr. Reed will probably re?
turn to Washington in a few days, unless Congress j
adjourns speedily. '
Additional Returns.?We have received the
following additional returns from the township
elections:
Be2t?n':Tcvnship.-~J> S. Acker, W. D. Wilkes. and
Wm. M. Cooley, Selectmen; G. W. McGee, Town
Clerk; James Gambrell, Survoyor ;Wm, Holmes,
Constable.
Martin Township.?Reuben Clinkscales, Wm.
Pruett and Benj. Pearman, Selectmen ; Columbus
Reid, Town Clerk j S. J. Emerson, Surveyor;
Samuel Mitchell, Constable.
. Directions for Use.'?As many of our readers'
are probably using Rhodes' Super-Phosphate, so
long recognized as a standard manure, we append
authorized directions as to how it should be man?
aged : . J$ :-"? '2 *-< " --' v - '?
Rhodes' Super-Phosphate can be used either
broadcast or in the hill, or with the seed in the
drill?in n) instance is it to be ploughed under n
sod, nor btidded upon. In case of replanting or
backward ,;rowtli, Rhodes' applied as a top-dress?
ing, produces spetfdy growth?it does act fire.
Exposure is of great advantage, as it absorbs am?
monia from the atmosphere, rain and den?it be?
ing established that a large quantity of ammonia
per acre is evolved during the year from these
sources.. An application of 200 pounds per acre is
considered sufficient for. crops, but experienced
planters report 300 pounds per acre as repaying
the outlay?high manuring, on few acres, being
the most desirable under our changed Tabor sys?
tem. Professor Charles U. Shcpard, in. a recen t
paper, says : j
"The planter will never obtain the best of arti?
ficial fertilizers until he incorporates them largely
with composts of stable manure, vegetable muck
and wood fshes. The idea of trusting to a fere
hundred pounds to the acre, of even the best fer?
tilizers, seems next to absurd to the Northern or
European agriculturist, who thinks nothing of en?
riching the same area with ten or fifteen tons of a
sound compost:"
Horse Tuiet Arrested.?On Sunday nigtit
List, a bay mnre belonging to Mr. David Crosoy
was stolen from Iiis plantation, three miles cast "of
this place, and upon ilic fact being discovered ear?
ly on Monday luornixig, pursuit was at once made
by himself and others. The heavy rain on Sunday
night oblfwrhting previous tracks, they were
enabled to follow the course taken by ihe thief
without much trouble. Passing through the vil?
lage, they tracked the horse out upon the Peudlc
lon road, and about two- miled from here, met the
animal returning homeward, riderless and. wit hout a
saddle. It seems that the thief was thrown Oy the
Lorsc, near Mr. Elias Eaule's Cross Roads place,
and'before his pursuers reached that point, he had
been discovered on the side of the road, disabled
by tho fall. Only a few hours elapsed before the
hapless youth was brought to town, upon a war?
rant issued for his arrest, and he was lodged in
jail. He is a white man, aged about l'2 years, 5
1'cet 8 or 9 inches high, auburn hair, grey eyes,
light moustache and side whiskers, florid complex?
ion and rough featured. He gives his name as I
Joux Sullivan, and hails from various places,
sometimes Abbe'ille or Greenville, and occasional?
ly Kentucky.
On Saturday night and Sunday previous to his
arrest, this scoundrel was at the house of Mr. N.
J. Brown, in the neighborhood where the horse
was stolen, and told that gentleman various stories
concerning himself, including a statement thai; he
had the misfortune, to lose a valuable horse on
Saturday, a few miles from Williamslon, and hence
was afoot. Mr. Brown, suspecting that all was
3q& right, kept an eye upon him, and when he dis?
covered at day light on Monday morning that tbe
bird had flown, at once concluded that the afore?
said bird had horses "on the brain," but was grati?
fied to find that the fellow had allowed his own
horses to pass unoticed. On hearing of Mr. Cros?
by's loss, these suspicions began to assume a definite
shape, and the sequel, brought him face to face with
bis quondam guest.
We have no doubt that this thief belonged to a
gang, and has been engaged in the business of
horse-stealing for several years. Indeed, we are
informed that a warrant for his arrest had been
lodged in the Sheriffs office last week, and there
are thus two cases on the docket against him.

? Joseph Abney, Esq., of Edgefield, in a letter
to the Charleston Jiewf, takes that paper and others
to task for commenting unfavorably upon the order
of Judge Platt, permitting two freedmen, tried for
the, murder of Mrs. Elkins, "to be discharged on
their own recognizance." He was counsel for the
prisioners, and thinks the circumstances justified
the order.

COTTON PLANTER.
THE undersigned offers to the planters of this
and adjoining counties an JMPRO VED COTTON
PLANTER, of his own invention, which has been
used by him for the past two years with complete
success. There are two kinds of this Tlanter ;
.one for planting the seed alone, by which a single
hand can open tho furrows, drop the seed, and
cover at the same time, at the rate of five acres
per day. The same amount of work can be ac?
complished with the other, and in addition to open?
ing the furrows, dropping the seed and covering,
a separate partition enables you to put in fertili?
zers in any desired quantity to the acre. It will
plant cither cotton, corn or peas, nnd give any
distance that may be desirable, which is a great
advantage over all other inventions of this kind.
It is simple in its-construction, and can be mana?
ged as easy as a plow.
Persons wishing to examine this Planter will
find one of each kind on exhibition at the store of
Kkksk k McCui.ly, No. 10 Granite Row, Ander?
son C. H. Any information respecting this Plan?
ter will be furnished on application to the above
named firm.
