seaboard." Poverty, suffering and destitution of
the people can'scarcely be realized?living in huts,
rudely constructed Of charred boards, of rails,
boughs and nrnd, you ore met by hollow-eyed,
emaciated forms, whose first words iare "bread'-?
for something to stifle the cravings of hunger. In
one place, 1 witnessed the body of a child borne to
Its last rest, on a board, in the same ntgs.in which
it died. In another, four females existed for a
week on two pounds of corn, together with some
roots. On the road, t met another who bad walked
twelm miles to- beg some food for her children.
Many other instances can be given of sad suffering
from actual want of food- Very truly, -

The Lady Managers, after mature deliberation,
have decided to bring it before, the generous peo?
ple of the North, by giving a Grand National En
?ertainjnent,. trusting to their active co-operation !
and sympathizing aid for the immediate supply of
means to enable them to purchase and forward food
to starring thousands. The Grand National En?
tertainment will be given at Washington, D. C,
August 1, 1867. 300,000 tickets will be offered
- for sale, at $2 each. Every ticket will be entitled
to an award, which will take place at the same
time. Half of the amount will be in valuable
awards to the holders, aqd the balance will be de?
voted at once (q the Lady Managers to purohaslng
food tq be sent South for immediate distribution
among the most needy. The Lady Managers have
entered into an arTapgement with Messrs. Bcntley,
Ct?xk e Co. to superintend the disposal of tickets,
and conduct the entertainment in a manner worthy
the patronage and support of the public.

having been completed through to Ncwberry,
freight and passage will be considerably reduced :
Leave Laurcns at 6 o'clock a. m., on Monday?,
Wednesdays and Fridays, and arrive at Newbcrry
at 12 o'clock.
, Leave Newberry on Tuesdnys and Thursdays at
11 o'clock, and on Saturdays at half-past 12 o'clock,
Connecting with the down train on the G. & C
