RETURNED. For the past week .we have noticed quite a nnraoer each day of our returned eoidiers, fresh from the Northern prisons. In general, they are looking hale and hearty, and from them we learn their con? dition has been much improved since the surrender of our armies. Among others we have been pleased to welcome Lionts. N. K. Sullivan and John L. Humphreys. The former has been, on Johnson's Island for two years, and has experienced all the vicissitudes of prison life during that time. Mr. Hum? phreys was captured at Salisbury, N. C, in April last, and has been sojourning at Camp Chase. After his relief, he spen t sev? eral weeks in Baltimore. Both these gen? tlemen are apparently in fine health, and we tender them our congratulations upon a safe return to home and friends. -<>-! B. F. BUTLER. It has been rumored that the above named individual would likely receive the appointment-of Military Govornor for this State. The iollowing from the Washing? ton correspondent of the New York Her? ald proves that there is no foundation for the report, and especially since the peo? ple ol South Carolina are manifesting a ?duo concern for their Own interests : " Nothing but the complete -blindness of the South Carolina people to Uieir own interests, and a failure to manifest a be? coming-concern for their own affairs, will induce the President to so far depart from ; his avowed policy on reconstruction as to appoint a military governor for any State, or to send it-as civil magistrate, the most offensive individual he'could possibly se? lect." . - ' Newbern, N. C, June 12. The North Carolina papers'are full of the proceedings of Union meetings which are being held in ev^ery town ip the State. All pay hyjh tributes to the lamented Lincoln, also to Andrew Johnson and Gov. Holden. The richest estates in the country aro offered for sale in all parts of North Car? olina, for from one to ten dollars per acrev with improvements. Their owners hav? ing decided to go North, are selling at a great sacrifice. Judge E. H. Sears, Commissioner of In? ternal revenue, has arrived hero, and will ? open an office in. Raleigh. An office has been opened at Beaufort by John R. French, and.one at Newbern by Hiram Potter, Jr. The people pay their taxes prompt? ly, considering the act equivalent to a restoration of their property. President Joh nson is fast gaining the confidence of tbo people of the State. - "Gov.'Holden is also-disarming his ene? mies by his services in endeavoring to re? store civil law to the State.. ?:-4^-.
