AL COMPOUND
la nny medical compound as ntueff depends upon the manner in which
Is compounded as upon the ingreditSs used.
1‘irst, there mast be a due proportion of the ingredients. Each drug
in the pharmacopeia has its special action. To combine any drug with other
drugs that have slightly different action, the combination most be made
with strict reference to the use for which the compound is Intended. The
drugs may be well selected as to their efficacy, but the compound ENTIRE-
IjY SPOILED B1 THE PROPORTION in which they are combined.
It tahes^years and years of experience to discorer this proportion. There
Is no law of chemistry, of pharmacy, by which the exact balance of propor
tion can be determined. EXPERIENCE IS THE ONLY GUIDE.
In < (impounding a catarrh remedy Dr. Hartman has had many years’
experience. • In the use of the various ingredients which composed the ca
tarrh remedy, Pernna, he has learned, little by little, how to harmonize the
action of each ingredient, how to combine them into a stable compound, how
to arrange them into such nice proportious as to blend the taste, the opera-
ation end the chemical peculiarities of each several Ingredient in order to
produce • pharmaceutical product beyond the criticism of doctors, pharma-
c^sts-or chemists.
WE REPEAT, THAT AS MUCH DEPENDS ON THE WAY IN WHICH
K DRUGS ARE COMBINED AS DEPENDS UPON THE DRUGS THEM-
SELVES.
The compound must present a stability which is not affected by changes
of temperature, not affected by exposure to the air, not affected by age. It
must be so combined that It will remain Just the same whether used in the
logging or mining camps of the northwest or the coffee plantations of the
tropics.
A complete list of the ingredients of Peruna would not enable any drug
gist or physician to reproduce Peruna. It is the skill and sagacity by which
these ingredients are brought together that give Peruna much of its pecu
liar claims as an efficacious catarrh remedy.
However mnrh virtue each ingredient of Peruna may possess, the value
of the compound depends largely upon the manner and proportion in which
tl»ey are combined. The right ingredients, put together rightly, is the only
way a medical compound can be made of real value.

Caml le’s inflammable Icecream.
Harper's Weekly recalls an anecdote
which used to be told by the late Jos*
eph Jefferson concerning the earlier
days of the Walnut Street Theatre in
Philadelphia. , ‘CamiUe' , was being
played, and all was coing with the
requisite Intensity. Then came a
scene between Camille and Armand,
In the course of which a servant was
to enter with lights. “In those days,”
said Mr. Jefferson, "sea island cotton
was stage Ice-cream, Just as molasses
and water were stage wine, sherry or
port, according to the proportion of
molasses. Armand and Camille were
seated at the table, where they had
teen enjoying such viands as these.
Then in came that maid servant with
the wabbliest sort of a candelbrum.
The scene was so engrossing that
she was scarcely noticed, but when
she set down her burden between the
lovers, and one of the candles toppled
out and put the ice cream in a blaze—
well, the strain was broken. The en
tire audience burst Into laughter, and
the curtain had to be rung down.”

Justice Harlan, of the United States
Supreme Court, recently celebrated
the golden anniversary of his wedding
and the fevent brought to light some
stories of the stalwart jurist. One re
lates how the justice was riding to
wards Washington on a sleeping car
from Louisville. Before retiring he
went Into the smoking compartment
to get a drink of water. There were
half a dozen men In the place, and a
flask had been passed around and the
glass used for the liquor. Justice Har
lan took up the glass, smelled It, and
turned on the smokers:
“Who,” he roared. In his deep bass
voice, “has had the termerlty to drink
whiskey out of this glass?”
“I did,” piped up the owner of the
flask, somewhat awed by the great
bulk of the Justice.
“Then, sir,” said the justice, stern
ly, “where are you hiding the bottle?”

Climbing a mountain daily to throw
fresh snow on the body of a former
schoolmate in order to keep the corpse
preserved for interment is the loving
task which for weeks Edward Schooley
and his wife have performed in Inyo
County. The body is that of Ray
mond Kelly, who, in a recent mountain
storm, died from exposure near a min
ing claim at the summit.
Schooley and his wife were unable
to raise $250, the sum demanded to
remove the body to Santa Barbara in
the winter time, so they determined
to keep it as long as they could in
high altitude, and a friendly under
taker promised to go to the spot in
February.
Kelly lost his life while climbing the
mountain and a comrade ran miles
down the trails in the snow to get aid.
The Schooleys responded, but could
not save Kelly. They carried the
corpse a mile down the mountain trail
and buried it in the deep snow of v a

The Tie Crop of the Future.
The Pennsylvania Railroad proposes
to plant trees systematically to furn
ish a cross-tie supply in future years.
This follows five years’ experimenta
tion along this hne. In this time 1,-
500,000 trees have been planted on
land owned by the company. An
area of C81 acres near Altoona, Pa.,
will in the springs of 1907, and 1908
be planted with chestnut and red oak
seedlings. The railroads of the coun
try are using about 110,000,000 cross
ties each year, of which the Pennsyl
vania uses about 5,500,000. This great
demand had denuded the forests so
rapidly that ties are now selling at
seventy cents each.
