On Thursday afternoon Mr. Cowles
I Courtney and Misss Kate Vernon, both

with the Southern Bell Telephone com-

The new artesian well has been drill
ed to a depth of 800 feet, but no water
of any consequence has yet been
struck.
It is reported that the Travers place
on the Whiskey road has been sold.
Mr. W- II. Vanderbilt is the reputed
purchaser, and the price is said to ap
proximated $20,000. It has been im
practicable, thus far, to obtain accu
rate information.
The quarterly meeting of the Board
of Trade will be held in the rooms ovijr
C. K. Henderson’s store at 8 o’clock
Tuesday evening, January 22nd. Im
portant matters will be discussed at
this meeting and a large attendance is
expected.
On Friday, the 25th instant Lillian
Russell will appear in the Augusta
Opera House in ‘The Butterfly,” and
the Augusta Aiken Railway Com
pany will run a special car to Aiktn
and intermediated points ten minutes
after fall of final curtain. Regular
fare. No passes accepted.

The secretary of state has issued a
charter to the South Carolina Public
Service corporation, which is capital
ized at $10,000,000 a: d has already re
ceived subscriptions amounting to
$3,000,000. The company states in its
charter that electric lines will he built
throughout the State from Charleston
through Columbia, Aiken, and the
Piedmont section, wuth the idea of
making .Charleston an important port.
The fee for the incorporation of the
company amounted to $2,802, which
was paid, and indicates that the firm
means business.

Sheriff Raborn has gone to Atlanta
with a requisition honored by the l
Governor of Georgia, for two men, |
Duggan and McKinley, charged with |
having broken into Mr. J. T. Shuler’s j
store at Montmorenci in 1902, and rob- ^
bing his safe.
The men are now serving sentences
of two years each in the Federal prison

Farm Residence Burned.
On last Wednesday night at about
10o’clock Mr. Chris. Johnson’s dwell
ing house on his place at Bank’s Mill
was burned, with all the furniture
etc.
It is not known how the fire origi
nated, but it had made such progress
when discovered that the members of
the household had only tim- to get
out of their beds, and escape with such
few things, as they were able to snatch
up.
The house was a good sized two story
one, and was insured for $1200. There
was no insurance on the furniture.
The total loss is estimated at about
$2,500.

SEC 1—That Sixty (60) Days after
the publication of this ordinance it
shall be ur.lawiul for any corporation
doing business within the city 1 limits,
to unload freight or express along its
lines of transportation on Laurens
Street or Park avenue, and it shall al
so be unlawful for any corporation
to distribute freight or express on said
streets. Provided that this ordinatnee
shall not prohibit the regular delivery
of said freight or express by delivery
carts or wagons.
Any corporation violating the pro
visions of this ordinance shnll be fined
in the sum of Five ($5.00) Dollars for
each and every such violation.

Interesting Missionary Service.
Yesterday Rev. A. E. Evison, of
Charleston, assisted the Rector, RevT.
W. Clift in the morning service in St
Thaddeus church.
In the afternoon a regular missionary
service was held, attended by the
members of the Woman’s, and Junior
axiliaries, the Sunday school children,
and many other members of the con
gregation. Mr, Evison gave a very in
teresting talk on missions, and was lis
tened to most attentively.
