Albert Sidney Johnston.
Of all truly great Americans, least
fs personally known of the chieftain
who fell at Shiloh, and whose fall be
gan the series of fatalities which at
tended the Confederacy to the end,
seeming to show that Providence was
on the side of the Union.
Though Kentucky born, Albert Sid
ney Johnston came of the oldest and
best New England stock. Not less
than Robert E. Lee he was the ideal
Christian soldier, not less than Lee
a master of the art of war. Had
he lived his fame would not have been
eclipsed by that of Lee; even more
than that of Lee, it belongs as a her
itage both to the North and to the
South.
Johnston was the rose and expect
ancy of the young Confederacy, as he
had been of the young Republic of
Texas, whose army be commanded.
He looked the Cavalier. He seemed
bom to the purple of the patrician. But
his forebears were Yankee to their
bootheels, mariners, scholars and
fighters of the old Connecticut line.
Intellectually he was the South’s first
man when the trial came, and, had
he been snared, this would have re
vealed itself conclusively, and equal
ly in the council and in the field. His
untimely taking off seemed then and
it seems now a destiny.—Louisville

The Dancing Monks of Thibet.
We were fortunate at Nartang to
find New Year festivities in full
swing. In a large courtyard in front
of the Compa about thirty monks
were solemnly preambulating to the
dirge of a band, and under the eyes
of the assembled countryside.
Their idea of dmeing was limited
to alternate lifting of the legs and
solemn pirouetting, which lacked the
Interest of high kicking and the
charm of skirt dancing. But the
grotesque dress and demoniac head-
gear of the performers was quite
enough for the onlookers, who were
entranced with the entertainment.
Though we were entirely unexpect

courtesy, making room for us in the
balcony overlooking the courtyard,
where he himself sat, and providing

Now, 70 per cent. o( this, it is point

The Vision of Insects.
A notable fact about the vision of
Insects, and one which it may be
supposed must largely influence their
wiew of the external world. Is the
number of facets, or lenses, in com

Leinemann, has been painstaking
enough to count the number of facets

Increases with the size of the body.
There is usually no permanent dif
ference between the sexes as to the
number of facets. Occasionally, how
ever, the difference is marked, as In
the case of Lampyris splendidula, in
which the male has 2,500 and the fe
male 300. One species is noted which
has the extraordinary number of 24,-

facets is greater in the rapidly mov

New Photograph Colors.
Mens. Lippmann. to whom we owe
All the progress made up to the pres-
I cut time in the difficult problem of the
; direct photography of colors, has just
j proposed a new solution. The prin-
, ciple of it is baoed upon the decom-
' position of white light by the prism.
The colored object chosen as a model
is placed before a glass plate bearing
longitudinal striae or flutings to the
number of five to the millimeter.
. These flutings 'act like very small
prisms which decompose the luminous
sheaves proceeding from the image
at .their passage into the camera ob-
scura. After the proof is obtained, de-
j veloped and dried, it is placed in its
position behind the fluted plate. If
then it be illumined with the white
iinht, it is seen through this plate
( to appear with the colors of the ob
ject photographed. The dispersive sys
tem of the fluted plate has decompos
ed the light into its elementary rays,
and the colored radiations have been
‘ distributed upon the sensitive plate.

“Did you see any of the old masters
while you were abroad?"
“My goodness, no,” replied Mrs.
Goldrccks. “They’re all dead, every

Twenty-five years ago the custom
of making New’ Year’s calls was a de
lightful one for all concerned, until
some of the boys got more “egg-nog”
or “apple-jack” than they could suc
cessfully carry.
Then the ladles tried to be charita
ble and the gentlemen tried to be as
chivalrous as ever and stand up at
the same time.
If anyone thinks there has not been
considerable improvement made in
the last quarter of a century in the
use of alcoholic beverages, let him
stop to consider, among other things,
the fact that the old custom of New’
Year’s calls and the gen*el tippling
is nearly obsolete.
The custom of calling on one’s
friends, however, at the beginning of
the new year, is a good habit, and
another good habit to start at that
time is the use of well-made Postum
instead of coffee or spirits.
A Staten Island doctor has a sensi
ble daughter who has set Postum be
fore her guests as a good thing to
drink at Yule Tide, and a good w r ay
to begin the New Year. Her father
writes:
“My daughter and I have used
Postum for some time past and w t q
feel sure it contains w’holesome food
material.
“I shall not only recommend it to
my patients, but my daughter will be
most pleased to give a demonstration
of Postum to our Chulstmas and New
Year’s callers.” Read “The Road to

There are two classes of remedies; those of known qual
ity and which are permanently beneficial in elieet, acting
gently, in harmony with nature, when natnre needs assist
ance; and another class, composed of preparations of
unknown, uncertain and inferior character, acting tempo
rarily, hut injuriously, ns a result of forcing the natural
functions unnecessarily. One of the most exceptional of
the remedies of known quality and excellence is the ever
pleasant Syrup of Figs, manufactured by the California
Fig Syrup Co., which represents the active principles of
plants, known to act most beneficially, in a pleasant syrup,
in which the wholesome Californian bine figs are used to con
tribute their rich, yet delicate, fruity flavor. It is the remedy
of ail remedies to sweeten and refresh and cleanse the system
gently and naturally, and to assist one in overcoming consti
pation and the many ills resulting therefrom. Its active princi
ples and quality are known to physicians generally, and the
remedy has therefore met with their approval, as well as with
the favor of many millions of well informed persons who know
of their own personal knowledge and from actual experience
re remedy. We do not claim that
t recommend it for what it really
of known quality and excellence,
containing nothing of an objectionable or injurious character.
There are two classes of purchasers; those who are informed
as to the quality of what they buy and the reasons for the excellence
of articles of exceptional merit, and who do not luck courage to go
elsewhere when a dealer offers an imitation of any W'ell known
article; but, unfortunately, there are some people who do not know,
and who allow themselves to be imposed upon. They cannot expect
its beneficial effects if they do not get the genuine remedy.
To tho credit of the druggists of the United States be it said
that nearly all of them value their reputation for professional
integrity and the good will of their customers too highly to offer
