Dyspepsiaj? Women
Caused by Female Disorders and Cured by
Lydia E. Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound
A great many women suffer with a
form of indigestion or dyspepsia which
does not seem to yield to ordinary treat

similar to those of ordinary indiges
tion, yet the medicines universally pre
scribed do not seem to restore the pa
tient’s normal condition.
Southern Sweet Potato Growers Think
Easterners Might Like Them.
Something like 175 varieties of
sweet potatoes may be produced in
the donth, but for practical consid
erations there are only half a dozen
or less that are commercially Im
portant.
These are divided by the Southern
Field Into two distinct classes. First,
the sorts held in favor In the North,
which must be yellow, dry, mealy,
small to medium size, and in the
opinion of the Southern grower the
less good quality they possess the
better they are appreciated.
Second, the varieties desired by
Southern consumers, vhich may be
yellow, red or white, medium or
large in size, but must be moist, sug
ary and of rich flavor—qualities di
rectly opposite to those demanded in
Ncrtheru markets.
The old pumpkin or yellow yam,
the vineless ya>m and the Red Provi
dence are considered the best for
Southern trade. These are good,
whether boiled or fried. When bak
ed they come from the oven covered
with a browned, sugary coating which
has resulted from the exudation of the
overabundance of sugar with which
the potato is loaded. They make pies
and puddings which are superior to
those made from pumkpins or
squashes.
People are governed by habit even
In eating, and the Northern consum
er, having firmly fixed in mind the
ideal for the Irish potato—that is a
dry, mealy potatoe—is disposed to sac
rifice quality to make the sweet po
tato conform to this standa d.
While this is true it is also a fact
that Northern visitors to the South,
many of whom have never had an op
portunity to buy in their home mar
ket's the varieties so highly esteemed
in the South, are quick to appreciate
their merits when served on the ta
ble at Southern hotels and in South
ern homes.
This has convinced many growers
and handlers of sweet potatoes that
some adequate movement should be
Inaugurated to educate the public at
large to the merits and good value of
thS Southern type of sweet potato.
The world’s production of Portland

the United States.

The proposition to tunnel the Eng

the channel will be tunneled before

soon.
Secretion Formed for Defense, Thinks
M. Seurat.
The origin of the pearl in the shell
of the oyster, or other bivalve or
mollusk, has been the object of a
considerable amount of investigation
and speculation. Among the more
recent studies of the subject may be
noted those of M Seurat recorded in
the “Comptes Rendus.” This natural
ist finds that in pearl oysters from
the Gambia lagoons, in the South
Pacific, the pearls are due to a small
worm—a sort of tapeworm. In cysts
on the body and mantle of the oyster
he has found true pearls surrounding
a nucleus which he has shown to be
one of these worms. Like other tape
worms, this one. concerned in the pro
duction of pearls, requires a second
host in which to complete its develop
ment. And M. Seurat considers that
the ray is the second host in this
case, for he has found in the spiral
intestine of this fish small tapew-orms,
which he regards as the adult form
of the larval w'orm of the pearl oys
ter. The author has named this new
species of tapeworm Tylocephalum
r/.argaritiferae. The view has been
held that the pearl is a secretion
formed, as it were, in self-defense for
the surrounding and isolation of a»
injurious foreign body.

Trade Union Old Age Pensions.
It may be doubted whether tho
jublic generally are fully aware of
what is already being dene for the
aged by working men through their
trade unions and other great self-help
organizations. Forty of the principal
trade unions paid in 1904 no less a
Bum than £267,390 in superannuation
benefit. The Amalgamated Society
of Engineers itself is paying more
than £100,000 a year to its aged mem

large expenditure on the unemployed
which again is no doubt greatly
swelled by those who are made work-
The price of gas in Walsall, Eng
land, has been reduced in the case of
manufacturers from 51 cents to 48
cents per 1,000 cubic feet. The Bir
mingham city authorities a short time
ago similarly reduced the price to 38
cents. Throughout this section ot
England, according to a consular re
port, there is an increased use of ga c i
for power purposes, and at the same
time a greater determination on the
part of gas companies, whether private
or municipal, to meet the competition
of the producer gas engine plant.—En

A very singular property of electric
currents, which is not generally known
is that called electrical osmose. An
electric current flowing through the
ground will cause water—slowly and
in small quantity, of course, to travel
along with it in the direction of the
negative electrode. During some re
cent experiments in England water
was thus caused to enter a glazed pipe
set in the ground. It penetrated the
walls of the pipe when electricity was
passed through them. The Electrical
Review suggests that this principle
might be applied to supply moisture
to plants. Electric currents properly
arranged in the ground would collect
water dispersed through the soil and
condense it round the roots.
The Artful Squirrel.
You may find many a squirrel in
the course of year tramp, but no two
alike exactly in their method of at
tempted escape or concealment. The
ways and means of the little rascals
are legion. One may flatten himself
out against a gray patch on the back
of a tree trunk, absolutely motion
less; and unless in your earnest,
steadfast looking you can detect an
i ear or a shoulder in relief against
the sky you might as well abandon
| search. Another may lie along a
bough flattened at full length; but
| here the telltale ears are more easily
silhouetted. Still another may crouch
j drawn up in a fork; and here the
thing to look for is the fluffy tip of
that little signal flag which always
works and waves and jerks and sig-
; nals so bravely when danger is not j
in the air. Or one may gather him-
self up in a bunch to imitate a knot
or knob; and here he can very well
tell when you have spied him our.
He will catch your eye, even as you
catch the eye of an acquaintance in
a crowd, and will instantly limber up
for headlong flight, leaping from tree
to tree, till he vanishes over tho
ridge.—Field and Stream.

of the engineer having to look out for
his signals, they declare themselves to

Both bell and whistle are fixed in

Power From Refuse.
Several small towns near Birming
ham, England, have combined to erect
a plant for disposing of refuse, and
at the same time furnish electrical
power. The old system of refuse dis
posal was unsatisfactory from a sani
tary point of view and cost $2,638
per annum. Under the new method,
as the heat produced by the combus
tion of ashes, etc., means steam, it
is calculated there will be from this
source an annual income of $7,000 to
$9,000. The Council has turned over
to an electrical syndicate the rights
to generate and sell electricity, and
the syndicate contracts to pay at
least 42,000 a year for the use of
the steam from the destructor. The
syndicate will build a plant near the
destructor to generate electricity for
power and light, and doubtless will
soon be able to use all the steam the
destructor can pro luce

Little- Girl’# Obstinate Case of Kciema—
Mother Says: “Cuticura Remedies
a Household Standby.”
“Last year, after having my little girl
treated by a very prominent physician for
an obstinate case of eczema, I resorted to
the Cuticura Remedies, and was so well
pleased with the almost instantaneous re
lief afforded that we discarded the physi
cian’s prescription and relied entirely on
the Cuticura Soap, Cuticura Ointment and
Cuticura Pills. When we commenced with ;
the Cuticura Remedies her feet and limbs
were covered with running aores. In
about six weeks we had her completely j
well, and there has been no recurrence of
the trouble. We find that the Cuticura j
Remedies are a valuable household stand- ;
by, living as we do twelve mnes from a
doctor, and where it costs from twenty to !
twenty-five dollars to come up on the |
mountain. Mrs. Lizzie Vincent Thomas,
