We learn that Mr. Kelly Toole Las
sold to Mr. John Newsome his two-
story house, with lot of 89 feet front by
150 in depth, on West side of Pendleton
stceet for #4,000.
The executor o* the Lyon Estate has j
sold to Mrs. E. R Bock the two-story
cottage with lot of 105 feet front by 150 I
feet in depth, on Chesterfield street for
$3,150.
Mrs. H. B. Livingston, of New York, j
has bought from Mr K E. Reynal
his smalt cottage, completely furnish
ed, at corner of Colleton avenue and
Fairfield street, for #8,000.
This cottage is one of the old land
marks of Aiken, and wasUen. Wheel-
ler’s headquarters when lie was in com
mand here in February 1865.

accumulated the money to pay the debt.

Ir. U- X. Gunter, Attorney General
XT South Carolina, died on Sunday at
bhe residence of his father at Bates-
fburg, in the 35th year of his age.
Mr, Gunter was taken with typhoid
fever in June last and ever since that
time has been declining in health.
The fever developed into tuberculosis
which was the direct cause of his death.

Married in St. Thaddeue Church on
Tuesday, the 27th instant, by Rev. T.

Atlanta, to Miss Lorena Gertrude

Proceedings of Court.
The regular spring term of the Court
of General Sessions was convened on
Monday, with Judge R. C. Watts on
the bench. Owing to some misconnec-
tion of railway trains the Judge did not
reach here until the afternoon, and
consequently the proceedings were not
regularly begun until 3 o’clock. Solic
itor Davis and Stenographer Byrnee
were both in their places.
No business was transacted Monday
afternoon beyond swearing witnesses
for the Grand Juiy. On Tuesday morn
ing the Judge charged the Grand Jury,
and the indictments were given them.
On Tuesday th* formal trial of A. S.
Courtney, charged with muider, in the
j ustifiable killing of West Bohler, col
ored, was had, and a verdict of not
guilty was rendered.
Stacy McDaniel and George Hill were
convicted of housebreaking and lar
ceny.
The case against Banyan Atkinson,
ciiargcd with murder, was nolprossed.
J. R. Franklin pleaded guilty to petit
larceny and was given a fine of $20 or
30 days on the chain gang.
On Wednesday the case against Abe n . , -
Tyler,charged with murder, was nol ;
pressed,
Wilson Stevens was tried for murder
in the killing of William Owens.
Major Duer, of the British Army,
and Mrs. Duer are in Aiken, the guests
of Mrs. Rottenburg Phelps.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank M. Potts, of
Media. Penn., are expected in Aiken
to-day to visit Mrs. E. C. Edgerton.
Dr. Gill Wylie, of New York, was in
Aiken last w r eek on profesiional busi
ness.
The pictorial supplement of Sunday’s
New York Times contained a handsome
picture of Misses Randolph and Titine
Hitchcock.
The Times says:
The engagement of Miss Randolph,
who is a daughter of the late Mrs. Win.
C. Whitney, to the Hon. Lionel Lam-
bart, of England, was recently an
nounced. Miss Hitchcock is a daugh
ter of Mr. Thomas Hitchcock Jr. Both
young ladies are clever horsewomen.
Mrs. H. W- Ravenel and Miss Susie
Ravenel arrived in Aiken on Saturday
aud are at the Misses Ravenel’s on
Greenville street.

Mr. and Mrs. Braddin Hamilton, of

Augusta, guests of Mrs, Henry B. King,
who entertains-a house party during
the horse show.

The enrollment of students at the
Aiken Institute for this school year has
been 285, which is the largest in its
history.
Mr. John T. Arthur says he will be a
candidate for Supervisor this summer.
His health is good now and will enable
him to make the race. 4
Lot# Dunbai, the negro, who with
Jim Williams, another negro, murder
ed Mr. E. H. Fisher last December, has
been captured at Punta Gorda, Fla.,
and was supposed to be on his way to
Aiken yesterday in charge of a con
stable.

It is stated that Mr. C. H. Lambertoa
'has sold his half interest in the Hocel
Park in the Pines to Mrs. Margaret
Keiffer and Mrs. Julia McArthur for
$150,000 The deed will not be executed
until the 1st of May next and the ho
tel will continue under it’s preswnt
management for J.he rest of this season.
As Mrs. Keiffer and Mrs. McArthur
already own a half interest in the prop
erty, the purchase of Mr Lamberton’s
interest makes them exclusive owners.
They are now the owners of the Park
Hotel at Mt. Clemens, Michigan.

Mr. H. W. Priest was in Aiken for a
day or two last week, it is reported to
look oxer the Park jr. the Pines Hbtel
preparatory to making arrangements

as to assuming the management of the
house next season.
The Columbia Correspondent of the
News and Courier says :
“Aiken is now the Mecca of many of
the most fashionable tourists. The bus
iness men of Aiken are arranging to
have another hotel. Mr. C. C. Wilson
has arranged for a conference in Aiken
with reference to final plans for the
new hotel which is to be erected on the
site of the present Palmetto Hotel.
The nurpose is to invest $250,0CK) in the
new’ hotel at the outset.”

On Wednesday, the 14th inst.. Mr. A.
IS. Courtney was compelled to shoot
and kill West Bohler, a negro, on his
farm about four miles from Langley in
•self defense.
It seems that two negroes, Ben Neal
and West Bohler, were working for Mr.
Courtney, cleaning out the stable
Bohler became tired of the work and
•quit. Outside the stable he met Mr.
Courtney, who is an old man of 75
years of age, and after being very in
dolent struck him, knocking the old
gentleman down. Upon getting
the negro knocked him down again.
As soon as Mr Courtney could get up
fie went into his house, where the ne
gro followed with an open knife. Mr.
Courtney got his pistol, and as the nc-
gao advanced on him, he shot him. The
bail struck Bohler in his right side in
flicting a wound from which he died on
Thursday.
Coroner Owens held an inquest ove
the body of the negro and the jury found
that it was a case of justifiable homi
cide.

Opening ft the Political Campaign.
Gen. AY’ilie Jones, chairman of the
State Democratic exeentive committee,
has announced that the committee
would be called to meet this year on
April 5th to consider the matters per
taining to the campaign {soon to open
and to issue a call for the State conven
tion, which will fortnully set the ball
in motion*
The meeting of the present clubs
will be held on the last Saturday in
April, the 28th, and the county con
ventions, made up of delegates selected
at the club meetings, will assemble on
the 7th of May to elect delegates to the
State convention, a county executive
committee, and a member from eaeh
county of the State Democratic exec
utive committee.
The State Democratic convention
will be h eld on the 16th of May, that
being the third Tuesday. It is not
known what matters will come before
the convention this year. After the
meeting of the convention the new ar
rangements for the State campaign
along lines decided upon in the con
vention. The itinerary will be mapped
out by the executive committee.
