Mason Cotton Harvester.
A number of Mason cotton harves
ters were manufactured for the last
crop and were sold to planters in
Mississippi, |Louisiana aud Texas.
The machines worked so successfully
(hat the company received orders for
a number of new machines from the
same parties* The harvesters have
been manufactured at the agricultu
ral machine works, owned by the late
James Richaroson, the great Missis
sippi cotton planter, but owing to his
death a short time ago, the works
have been closed, and (he company
have been compelled to make other
arrangements for the manufacture of

eucalyptus oil, and the run on | Just previous to the recent illness
of Mr. C. T. Mason, Jr., the company
had authorized him to fit up the shop
and obtain workmen from the North
to manufacture the harvester in Sum
ter. Owing to Mr. Mason’s illness
nothing has been done yet; but it is
expected that arrangements will be
perfected in a short time and the
and the shop in Sumter will be run
uing full time turning out the har
vesiers.
Eucalpytus oil is said to be a sure
preventive of the grip, and its use
has become quite a fad in Loudon.
Among the curious developments of
the day it is announced that the Au
tomatic Put a Penny in the Slot Per-
tumery Company has substituted
eucalyptus oil, which is now the pop
ular remedy for influenza, for their
former assortment of sweet odors.
J weeki y newspaper has impreg , 0

the United States army under orders
from the Secretary of War, are here

The Register of the 6th says: The
offices of the Cotton Plant were
moved to Columbia yesterday. The
plant will remain in Orangeburg for
some time and the printing will be
done there for a while longer, but the
business and editorial departments
have been moved here. The Alliance
Publishing Company has secured
quarters on the second floor of the
building at the northeast coiner of
Lady and Main streets, and Managing
Editor Bowden and Beokkeeper Daly
can be found there henceforth.

COoemAfe —ITS CAUSE*AND CURE.
Coughing is an involuntary effort to
expel irritating matter from the lungs
or bronchial passages, and is, therefore,
as necessary, at times, as vomiting is to
relieve the stomach of indigestible or
poisonous substances. As a general
rule, when the stomach is unburdened
of its contents, the retching ceases.
Not so with bronchial irritation, the
effect being liable t»> remain long after
the primary cause has been removed.
The reason of this is that, in the acts of
coughing and expectoration, the mucous
coating of the throat and air passages
becomes inflamed and congested; conse-
qncntly the inclination to cough and ex-
pevtoiote still continues and the delicate
tissue of the fauces are further irritated.
The great danger of a severe and pro
tracted cough is in the liability either
to rupture a congested blood-vessel or
to cause an irritation and soreness that
may result in ulceration of the lungs.
The obvious course of treatment is
to administer, first, an expectorant that
will assist in loosening and bringing
away the phlegm; and, secondly, an
anodyne to soothe the inflamed and irri
tated membrane. To accomplish this
two-fold purpose is the design of all
cough-cures; but the danger with most
of them is that they are so cloying
to the stomach as to seriously inter
fere with the process of digestion; con-
8e<~ue**ly, in the effort to cure one
complains, the patient is liable to con
tract another
What, then, is‘to be done ? The
answer is: Take a ms^ine that is both
an anodyne and an expectorant one
which loosens the phlegm soothes
the irritated membrane, huv'^^s n ot

reply unhesitatingly, it can — in Ayer’s
Cherry Pectoral. For more than forty
years this preparation has been in use,
and it is without doubt, the safest
and most efficacious of all cough-cures.
That it is so estimated by the public is
evident from the fact that no other
preparation of the kind is in such uni
versal demand. As a family medi
cine, for cases of croup, whooping cough,
sore throat, bronchitis, and the sudden
pulmonary troubles to which children
are exposed, Ayer’s Cherry Pectoral is
simply invaluable.
