this cotton crop, embracing port re

The Strike Ended.

The wha-f laborers’ strike is over.
It virtually ended Saturday, but those
who saw’ the mistake they had made
did not then dare antagonize the lead
ers of the movement. Yesterday
morning hundreds of laborers return
ed to work and many more would
havedone so could they have obtained
employment. The leaders, however,
were unwilling to give in and fought
against the inevitable until last night,
w’hen the president and chairman of
the labor union officially declared the
strike off.
The ill-advised movement has made
a break between the business men and
their colored laborers which it will
take time to mend. It will be diffi
cult to forget that men who had for
years been faithful to their trusts de
serted their posts at the dictates of
those of whose very names even they
w’ere ignorant. Those who were true
to the best interests of the commu
nity, however, will not be forgotten.
Were it not for the strong commer
cial position w’hieh Savannah has es
tablished for itself the strike- would
have done much injury to the city’s
business interests. Yesterday busi
ness resumed its former activity, and
to-day every trace of the recent troub
les caused by the derangement of
labor will doubtless disappear.
Fashionable circles in New York
are much exercised as to the identity
of four pretty American girls who
have arrived in London to dance a
miuuete before the Queen. Their
chaperon refuses to give their names,
but says they are well known in the
best New York society. A picture,
however, is printed in the October
number of The New York and Palis
Young Ladies’ Fashion Bazar, enti
tled “Pretty girls burning to dance
the minuete,” which gives some clew
to their identity. The New York

Three prisoners were flogged in a
Toronto prison the other day, this be
ing a portion of their punishment for
assaulting a defenseless girl. Canada
is popularly supposed to be behind
the times, but the retention of the
whipping-post for a certain class of

One great drawback to aluminum
is that no method of soldering it has
yet been found. A speaker at a meet
ing of the German Society of Me

No portion of the human organism
has, within the past few’ years, been
submitted to more thorough and intelli
gent examination, by medical scientists,
than the blood. The result of these in
vestigations has been to clearly demon
strate that the general health is more
dependent upon the condition of the
blood than upon any other thing.
In. making a diagnosis, some modern
practitioners are not satisfied with
merely determining the temperature
of the blood: they test it by means of
the microscope and other appliances, to
ascertain if any foreign bodies have in
troduced themselves among its minute
corpuscles. Thus, for example, it has
been found that in persons affected
with gout, uric acid may always be de
tected in the blood; w hile the cause of
other disorders has been traced to the
presence of germs, or microbes.
These discoveries have thrown a flood
of light on the causes of disease; and
physicians now, in the treatment of
many complaints, go directly to the root
of the evil by endeavoring to purify the
blood of its contaminating poisons. For
this purpose nothing else has been found
so efficacious as the iodide of potassium.
But the best effects of this drug can
only be obtained when it is used in
combination with other things, '•uch as
sarsaparilla, podophyllum, or yellow
dock; and Ayer’s Compound Extract of
Sarsaparilla, being considered the most
skilful union of these ingredients known
to pharmacy, is therefore most highly
recommended by physicians.
Even if the iodides were not present,
the- Honduras sarsaparilla alone, of
which Ayer’s medicine is the extract,
would be sufficiently effective, in the
majority of cases, to produce the most
desirable results. But, “to make assur
ance doubly sure,” and to greatly facili
tate the purifying process, the iodide of
potassium lends its powerful alterative
and detergent properties to the rest.

parilla is that, while it is quite as potent
for most purposes as the iodide alone, it
is safer in non-professional hands; for,
by simply following the directions on
the wrapper, the patient becomes his
