the Teachers’ Association.
Mrs Hay and Mrs Hattie F. Town
send went down to Barnwell on
Wednesday, having been summoned
there on account of the illness of Dr.
J. J. O’Bannon. We are sorry to see
by the Barnwell Sentinel that he is
considered serious ill.
The seasonable and moderate rains
of the early part of the week were of
g reat service to the crops. These
ad begun to suffer, and corn particu
larly to show the ill effects of the dry
spell. They have been greatly re
freshed, and now promise well.
Mr. J. U. Rives, the well-known
dry goods salesman, formerly of Co
lumbia, but now of the firm of J. U.
Riyes & Co., of Aiken, is in the city
g reeting his many friends, who wish
im much success in business. Mr.
Rives is now one of Aiken’s most suc
cessful merchants.—Columbia Record.
Mr. Thomas Butler has captured
West Roberts, his negro milkman
who defrauded him some months ago
by collecting milk bills in Augusta,
and absconding with the proceeds.
The question is now raised whether
the culprit shall be tried in Georgia
or South Carolina, but Mr. Butler
says that it does not matter to him,
for he is going to have West punished
and does not care whether it Is done
in Georgia or Carolina.

We have received a copy of the Bar
Harbor Tourist, an interesting society
paper of 20 pages, published semi
monthly during the season at Bar
Harbor, Maine. In it we see men
tioned several persons well known in
Aiken, Mrs. S. E. Lyon and family
are at Eden field, their cottage there.
Mrs. Geo. P. Bowler has taken the
Tally rand there for the season. The
Tourist mentions what may be a
pointer for our people, that is, that
high priced cottages in Bar Harbor
rent the best.
A meeting of the Young Men’s
Christian Association was held on
Tuesday evening, but the attendance
was small. No business of impor
tance was transacted, and it was de
cided to v\ T ait until the next meeting
before taking any definite action ;
about renting a suite of rooms. The :
constitution of this association does
not permit it to enter into an obliga
tion for this rent until $500 have been
raised, whereas, only about $300 have
thus far been subscribed. But the
commitee hopes to obtain the remain
der by the next meeting.

The Iton-Air Hotel to be Sold.
The Bon-Air Hotel in the Sand
Hills, near Augusta, will be sold at
public outcry on the 22d of August, to
satisfy debts against it. All the par
ties interested have come to an agree
ment by which Messrs. J. R. Lamar
and John J. Cohen have been named
as receivers, with instructions to sell
ths hotel on the day mentioned.
The Chronicle says: “all sides seem
to concede the desirability of a sale at
as early a day as possible. Nobody
wants to see the hotel closed next
season, and therefore the sale must be
made in time to allow the purchaser
to lease the property, or make other
satisfactory arrangements for running
the hotei, and if leased, the lessee
must have lime to make his needed
arrangements.”
It is also said that the hotel made a
good lot of money last season; but if
this was true, it strikes one as strange
that it should have to be sold for debt
now.
